Commercial Drivers Face License Suspension Pending Crash Probe

BusinessToday2 days ago
Commercial vehicle drivers, including those operating buses, trucks, lorries, and vans, who are involved in accidents will now face immediate suspension of their Public Service Vehicle (PSV) or Goods Driving Licence (GDL) pending the completion of accident investigations. This stringent new measure was announced today by the Road Transport Department (RTD) in a concerted effort to curb the alarming rise in commercial vehicle-related accidents on Malaysian highways.
The directive means that any driver holding a PSV license (required for passenger vehicles like buses) or a GDL license (mandatory for goods vehicles such as trucks, lorries, and vans) will have their credentials temporarily revoked as soon as their involvement in an accident is confirmed. The suspension will remain in effect throughout the entire duration of the official investigation into the incident, ensuring a period of enforced non-operation for the drivers in question.
This move underscores the RTD's escalating concern over the increasing frequency and severity of crashes involving heavy and commercial vehicles, which often lead to significant casualties and traffic disruptions. By immediately suspending licenses, the department aims to enforce stricter accountability among commercial drivers and their employers.
While the move could cause inconvenience to commercial vehicle operators but the implementation is necessary given high number of road accidents that often lead to fatality. Related

RTD announces recall of over 8,000 vehicles from Kia, Yamaha and Mercedes-Benz

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has announced a recall of 8,322 vehicles from three manufacturers, Kia, Yamaha and Mercedes-Benz, due to various safety defects that could pose a risk to road users. In a statement, RTD said the recall involves models with potential issues ranging from electrical short circuits to malfunctioning sensors and improperly reworked components. "The majority of affected units involve 5,123 Kia Rio UB vehicles produced between 2010 and 2017. "The model is reported to be at risk of an electrical short circuit that may lead to a fire within the circuit board of the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU)," it said. RTD also said a total of 3,167 Yamaha motorcycles are also being recalled, comprising 1,649 MT09 and 1,369 Tracer 9 GT units manufactured between November 2021 and February 2025, which are affected by faulty throttle position sensors (TPS). Another 149 units of the Tenere 700 model from 2023 to 2024 are facing clutch operation issues that can make gear shifting difficult. "Mercedes-Benz is recalling 32 vehicles from various high-end models, including the S-Class, GLC 300 4MATIC, AMG SL 43, EQS 500, AMG EQE 53 and AMG EQS 53. "The issue involves the possibility that the prefuse box may not have been reworked correctly, potentially compromising vehicle safety. The affected units were produced between 2023 and 2025," it said. The department added that all owners will be contacted by their respective vehicle manufacturers to schedule inspections and necessary replacements. "All defective components will be replaced at no cost to vehicle owners. Owners are urged to contact authorised service centres for further information and are encouraged to promptly arrange for inspections to ensure their vehicles are safe for use," it said. RTD also said that it will monitor the implementation of the recall to ensure all affected vehicles are inspected and certified safe.

Sime Motors unveils Malaysia's first zero-waste tyre recycling initiative

KUALA LUMPUR: Sime Motors has launched a zero-waste tyre recycling programme, marking a step forward in its environmental efforts. In collaboration with Evergreen Corporate Sdn Bhd, the programme will be implemented across all Sime Motors dealerships in Peninsular Malaysia from July 1. It is the first structured initiative of its kind by a Malaysian automotive retail group, aimed at reducing the environmental impact of end-of-life tyres through a closed-loop recycling process. Through the programme, used tyres collected from Sime Motors' service operations at brands such as BMW, MINI, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo, BYD, Denza, Drivecare and Auto Selection will be sent to Evergreen, whose facility utilises the advanced thermal recovery green technology. According to Sime Motors, the process enables 100 per cent material recovery with low harmful emissions turning waste into reusable industrial resources such as carbon black, fuel oil and recovered steel. Evergreen is also accredited with the environmental, social and governance (ESG) Gold rating by Malaysian Rating Corporation Bhd, recognising its leadership in sustainable waste management. Sime Motors nanaging director of Southeast Asia Jeffrey Gan said the programme reflects the group's commitment to sustainability and innovation in waste management. "With Evergreen Corporate's advanced capabilities, we're proud to lead the zero waste* tyre recycling within the industry," he said in a statement. Evergreen chief executive officer Wan Afif Azizul said the partnership is a significant milestone not just for the company, but for the future of green technology in Malaysia. Evergreen co-founder Kwang Meng Kian said the company is constantly working to innovate and advance tyre recycling technology. "This collaboration not only addresses the challenge of tyre disposal but does so using a solution that is clean, scalable and future-ready," he added. Sime Motors said the partnership complies with Department of Environment standards and supports national ESG and sustainability goals. The company said it recognises the need to take responsibility for its environmental impact in ways that are both practical and meaningful to customers and communities. Sime Motors said customers can be assured that used tyres from its service centres are processed through an environmentally responsible recycling system. It added that the initiative allows customers to contribute to environmental sustainability when servicing or purchasing vehicles from Sime Motors.
