TORONTO (AP) — George Springer had a career-high seven RBIs, including his ninth grand slam, and the Toronto Blue Jays celebrated Canada Day by beating the Yankees 12-5 on Tuesday and closing within one game of AL East-leading New York.
Andrés Giménez had a go-ahead, three-run homer for the Blue Jays, who overcame a 2-0 deficit against Max Fried. After the Yankees tied the score 4-4 in the seventh, Toronto broke open the game in the bottom half against a reeling Yankees bullpen.

Springer went 3 for 4, starting the comeback with a solo homer in the fourth against Fried and boosting the lead to 9-5 with the slam off Luke Weaver after Ernie Clement's go-ahead single off shortstop Anthony Volpe's glove. Springer has 13 homers this season and his second of the day was his 100th for the Blue Jays.
Toronto won the first two games of the four-game series and closed within one game of the Yankees for the first time since before play on April 20.
MARLINS 2, TWINS 0

Edward Cabrera (3-2) struck out six and only allowed two hits and one walk in seven innings, the longest start of the season by a Marlins pitcher. He struck out Byron Buxton to end the third for his 400th career strikeout, becoming the third-fastest to reach the mark in franchise history.
Stowers gave Miami a 1-0 lead in the second inning with his 14th home run of the season. He initially took first base after appearing to get hit by a pitch. But Minnesota challenged and the call was overturned.
Anthony Bender pitched a perfect eighth and Ronny Henriquez struck out back-to-back batters to begin the ninth to help secure his fourth save.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Catcher Henry Davis drove in the game's only run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and preserved the lead with a tag at the plate in the ninth, giving Pittsburgh a win over St. Louis as Pirates ace Paul Skenes' winless streak reached six starts.
Pittsburgh's Ke'Bryan Hayes led off the bottom of the eighth with a single off Phil Maton (1-3). Pinch-hitter Adam Frazier doubled to right and Hayes scored on Davis' fly ball to center.
St. Louis had runners on second and third with one out in the ninth when Victor Scott hit a slow chopper that first baseman Spencer Horwitz fielded and threw to Davis, who tagged Jose Fermin at the plate.
Skenes pitched five scoreless innings and allowed five hits and one walk and struck out five while throwing 88 pitches. Skenes, who is 4-7 with a 2.03 ERA, has not won since May 28 at Arizona and is winless in six starts against the Cardinals.

The Rays' last three-game skid came against the the Phillies at home in early May and they have now lost four of five to last-place teams.
Colby Thomas, who got his first career hit earlier, started the 10th on second base and was sacrificed to third by Denzel Clarke.
No. 9 hitter Max Schuemann, who was starting in place of Jacob Wilson, the second-leading hitter in the majors who was a late scratch with a sore right hamstring, worked Mason Montgomery (1-2) for a walk ahead of pinch-hitter Wynns.

CHICAGO (AP) — Matthew Boyd pitched seven sharp innings for his eighth win, Seiya Suzuki cracked his team-leading 23rd homer and Chicago topped sliding Cleveland.
Carson Kelly doubled twice with a sac fly for three RBIs. Michael Busch went 3-for-3 and drove in a run to help NL Central-leading Chicago win its 50th game.
Carlos Santana had two hits, including his 400th career double, but Cleveland dropped its fifth straight.
The Guardians scored two runs in the fourth — ending a skid of 17 straight scoreless innings — on Nolan Jones' RBI single and Angel Martínez's sacrifice fly. Cleveland has scored in just two of its last 45 innings.

Boyd (8-3) allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeout and one walk. The left-hander finished by retiring 11 straight hitters before Brad Keller entered for the eighth.
Daniel Palencia struck out two in a perfect ninth for his ninth save.
RANGERS 10, ORIOLES 2
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jacob deGrom won his fifth consecutive decision in another impressive start, Adolis García drove in four runs and Texas beat Baltimore.
Alejandro Osuna hit his first career homer for Texas, which had gone extra innings in each of its previous four games — losing three of those.
DeGrom (9-2, 2.13 ERA) struck out six over six innings in his 14th consecutive start working at least five innings and allowing two runs or fewer. That extended his franchise record and is the longest streak in the majors this season.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner scattered five hits, allowing a two-run homer to Gary Sánchez in the fourth that just cleared the wall. Six nights earlier in Baltimore, deGrom was perfect through six innings and took a no-hitter into the eighth.
ASTROS 6, ROCKIES 5
DENVER (AP) — Victor Caratini hit his third career grand slam, Christian Walker went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Houston beat Colorado.
The Astros have won seven of eight and 15 of their last 19 games.

San Francisco has lost seven of its past eight games.
ROYALS 6, MARINERS 3
SEATTLE (AP) — Salvador Perez hit a pivotal two-run double in the fifth inning, and Kansas City beat Seattle for just their second win in 10 games.
Perez lofted a fly ball off Emerson Hancock (3-5) that center fielder Julio Rodríguez lost in the twilight sky and dropped for a two-run double. Rodríguez climbed the center-field wall, trying to rob a home run, but he misjudged the ball and it bounced to the wall as the Royals took a 5-1 lead.
Ben Williamson hit an RBI double in the bottom half and scored on J.P. Crawford's single off Michael Lorenzen.

Five relievers combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings of one-hit relief. Lucas Erceg (3-2) entered with two on in the seventh and got a double-play grounder and a groundout, and Carlos Estévez pitched a perfect ninth for his 23rd save in 26 chances.
DODGERS 6, WHITE SOX 1
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani reached 30 homers for the fifth straight season, hitting a fourth-inning drive after fouling a pitch off the plate umpire, and Los Angeles beat Chicago.
Ohtani fouled the ball off Alan Porter's right knee in the fourth. Ohtani checked on the umpire and stood by watching until Parker got up under his own power. The three-time MVP then hit a 408-foot shot to center, snapping an 0-for-6 skid and extending the lead to 6-1.

Ohtani walked over and checked on Porter again during the seventh-inning stretch before leading off.
Los Angeles scored its most runs this season in support of Yoshinobu Yamamoto (8-6), staking the Japanese right-hander to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Dodgers won for the 13th time in 16 games and opened a season-high, eight-game NL West lead.
Every run in the game was scored with two outs.
Yamamoto allowed one run and three hits in seven innings, struck out eight and walked one.

McNeil's 2-run homer in 7th off Weaver lifts Mets over Yankees 6-5 in Subway Series opener

NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff McNeil hit a go-ahead, two-run homer off Luke Weaver in the seventh inning, leading the New York Mets over the Yankees 6-5 on Friday in a Subway Series opener between teams that faded badly after strong starts. Juan Soto hit a two-run homer among three hits against his former team and Brett Baty connected for a solo shot in the sixth off Ian Hamilton that cut the Yankees' lead to 5-4. Weaver (1-3) relieved with two outs in the seventh and walked Pete Alonso. McNeil drove a changeup into the right-field upper deck at Citi Field, sending the Yankees to their fifth straight loss during a slide that dropped them from the AL East lead. Jasson Domínguez ended a 32-game homerless streak, hitting a pair of opposite-field homers and driving in three runs. Domínguez and Judge hit back-to-back homers starting the game, Judge's 32nd this year, and Cody Bellinger also went deep for the Yankees. Huascar Brazobán (4-2) pitched a hitless seventh and Reed Garrett got six outs for his third save, helped by an outstanding defensive play from McNeil at second base in the ninth. The Mets were a big league-best 45-24 on June 12 and the Yankees 42-25 but the Mets are 6-14 since and the Yankees 6-15. With 13 Mets pitchers on the injured list, 28-year-old right-hander Justin Hagenman made his first major league start and allowed four runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. Soto hit his 21st home run this season in the first after Domínguez misplayed Brandon Nimmo's leadoff double. McNeil's homer came on the fourth of six changeups Weaver threw him. Key stat Weaver has allowed homers in three straight appearances. After compiling a 1.05 ERA in his first 24 games, he has a 13.50 ERA in seven outings since returning from a strained left hamstring. Up next Yankees LHP Carlos Rodón (9-5, 2.95 ERA) and Mets RHP Frankie Montas (0-1, 6.00) are scheduled to start Saturday. ___

Mets 3, Brewers 2: Milwaukee comes up short in key moments for first series loss in a month

NEW YORK — A series that began so promising in The Big Apple ended with a sour taste. After Joey Ortiz's go-ahead grand slam sent the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-2 win in the series opener, they had high hopes for the remaining two games against the reeling New York Mets. Advertisement Instead, the Brewers boarded a late-night flight to Miami with nothing but frustration and their first series loss in nearly a month. BOX SCORE: Mets 3, Brewers 2 Balls didn't bounce the Brewers' way in key situations, including on Juan Soto's go-ahead single late, and Brewers offense wasn't able to take fortune into its own hands in a 3-2 loss to the Mets in the series finale at Citi Field on July 3. "Always disappointed when we lose," Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. "Especially when it comes down to inches here or there, or it comes down to pitches or it comes down to a close call. Sometimes you just got to win by more than that." Advertisement The last time Milwaukee dropped a series? You have to go back to June 9-11 at home against the Atlanta Braves. Andruw Monasterio delivers in rare starting opportunity but offense does little else Starting for the first time in nearly a month even – his last time in the lineup came June 4, Andruw Monasterio did his part with the bat. With Mets starter David Peterson rolling and two outs in the seventh, Monasterio roped a solo home run down the line in left for his first long ball of the year to bring the Brewers back within 3-2. Monasterio had only not been out of the lineup every day since June 4, he had hardly even stepped into the batter's box, taking all of two plate appearances over the team's previous 22 games. Advertisement "Last year helped me a lot for this year," Monasterio said. "The veteran guys help me, the coaches help me with giving me advice. I'm trying to take that advice and follow it. I'm playing every game like it's the last." It didn't end up mattering, though. Mets setup man Ryne Stanek struck out the side in the eighth and Edwin Díaz locked down his second save in as many nights, with some assistance from a super throw by catcher Luis Torrens to catch Christian Yelich stealing for the second out. Yelich was called safe on the field, but replay seemed to show the glove of shortstop Francisco Lindor brush Yelich's jersey right as he caught the ball and before Yelich's fingertips touched second base. Díaz then struck out Brice Turang swinging to an eruption from the sellout crowd of 42,241. The Mets improved to 9-0 in games started by Peterson at home this season, and the southpaw dropped his Citi Field earned run average to 2.11 in 2025. Advertisement Milwaukee dropped to 1-35 when trailing after eight innings and still has only three wins after trailing by multiple runs this season —all of which came in a span of eight total games between May 25 and June 2. "I like our team, guys," Murphy said. "We battle. You're facing one of the best lefties in the game this year. We didn't get the ball to go our way." Third time through troubles for Quintana give the Mets the lead José Quintana's initial reaction was elation. Then he turned around. What the Brewers left-hander thought was an inning-ending double play off Soto's bat to keep the game tied through sixth turned into a 101.3 mph single that turned the tides in the host's favor for good. Advertisement "It's a really weird sensation," Quintana said. "Because as soon as you get the ground ball you're ready and excited to jump and celebrate the play, because that's what you're looking for, a ball on the ground. It's tough when you see the ball pass through. But it is what it is." One batter later, after Murphy had pulled Quintana from the game, Pete Alonso roped a double off the wall in left-center to give the Mets a 3-1 lead and drive in what would ultimately be the winning run. It was an agonizing inning for Quintana and the Brewers, who was burned by some soft contact even though he otherwise allowed eight of the 12 firmest-struck balls of the game. Starling Marte, New York's leadoff hitter, poked an infield single and moved to third when Francisco Lindor pulled out his fishing rod on a down-and-away changeup and dumped the two-strike pitch into right. Quintana then caught too much of the plate with another two-strike pitch, this time to Soto, who rocketed a single past a diving Monasterio at second base to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. Advertisement Bad luck in the inning or not, it wound up as the second straight start and third out of the last four in which the opposing offense broke through with a big rally against Quintana while seeing him for the third time in the game. After allowing three or more runs only once through his first eight starts with the Brewers, Quintana has now given up at least that many in three of his last four outings and 14 runs in total. Quintana didn't walk anyone for the first time since his April 11, but he also finished the day with only three swings and misses generated while the Mets offense tagged him for a 55.6% hard-hit rate. "I thought he was great." Murphy said. "Best outing I've seen him have since I was on the other side of the field." There was a path the Brewers could have taken in the sixth that involved removing Quintana from the game after striking out Tyrone Taylor, the Mets' No. 9 hitters, to open the frame. Advertisement Quintana entered the day with opponents boasting an .852 OPS against him the third time through the order in a game and wasn't getting whiffs. To that point, eight of the Mets' 15 balls in play were over 95 mph. And Starling Marte, Lindor and Soto were the batters looming. But removing Quintana wasn't even a consideration in the dugout. "Absolutely not," Murphy said. "You saw what happened. He got the balls that produce outs. He didn't give up any hard contact. He had a tough scenario. The ball up the middle is a ground ball. The ball Lindor hit is a bloop and the ball Soto hit is a double play ball. What else could Quintana do? "I could've left him in, to be quite honest with you. That might have been more of the question." Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images First hit leads to first Brewers run Peterson held the Brewers without a hit through 3 2/3 innings until Caleb Durbin finally broke the dam with an infield bleeder. Advertisement It was a well-timed (and well-placed) knock for Durbin, as the Brewers had runners on the corners thanks to a leadoff walk and error by second baseman Brett Baty on a Rhys Hoskins line drive. William Contreras scored from third as Durbin beat the throw from third baseman Mark Vientos to knot the score at 1-1. A Brandon Nimmo ambush opens the Just as he did the night before, Brandon Nimmo hacked away at a first pitch and sent the ball out to right for a home run to lead off the game's scoring. This one, at least, wasn't of the grand slam variety as his second-inning blast off Jacob Misiorowski was in the July 2 contest, but rather a solo shot that left the bat at 109.1 mph.
