Claire Hutton scores first international goal to help the United States beat Canada 3-0
Claire Hutton scored for the first time in her international career, and Sam Coffey and Yazmeen Ryan also contributed goals to lead the United States to a 3-0 win over Canada on Wednesday night. The Americans have won five straight friendlies by a combined score of 18-0 since their 2-1 loss to Brazil in early April. The 19-year-old Hutton was making her sixth appearance for the national team, and her goal in the 36th minute gave the U.S. a 2-0 lead. Ryan completed the scoring in the 89th minute. It was the third game in seven days for the U.S., which beat Ireland 4-0 in each of the other two. Coach Emma Hayes' starting lineup against Canada included 10 changes from the second game against Ireland. Lynn Biyendolo, the lone player to start both of those games, slipped behind the defense for an early chance but missed the net. Moments later, she had a header saved by Canadian goalie Kailen Sheridan. The U.S. opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Rose Lavelle delivered a free kick into the penalty area from near the left sideline. Canada's Janine Sonis tried to head clear, but the ball fell to Avery Patterson and then bounced to Coffey about 9 yards from the goal. Both Coffey and Patterson stabbed at the ball, and both appeared to make contact with it. It went straight into the net. Coffey was credited with the goal and Patterson with an assist. Claudia Dickey, who also shut out Ireland in her international debut last Thursday, stopped a shot from in close by Canada's Jordyn Huitema shortly after Coffey's goal. But the Americans created far more chances. Lavelle received a standing ovation when she was subbed out around the midway point of the second half. The crowd also gave a big cheer when Tara McKeown — who plays locally for the Washington Spirit — came on as a late sub for the U.S. McKeown assisted on Ryan's goal. The U.S. plays friendlies against South Korea on September 6 in Harrison, New Jersey, and against Japan on September 9 in Columbus, Ohio.

Wimbledon: Fritz survives 109-game grind to reach third round
Wimbledon, July 3 (UNI) Fifth seed Taylor Fritz displayed remarkable resilience and stamina today as he battled past Canadian Gabriel Diallo in a five-set thriller to reach the third round of Wimbledon 2025. In a match that lasted three hours and six minutes, Fritz prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(0), 4-6, 6-3- his second consecutive five-set win in as many days. Having played a total of 109 games over his first two rounds, Fritz now holds the third-highest number of games played through the opening two rounds of Wimbledon since 2022. Fritz, who recently won his fourth title at Eastbourne, was coming off another exhausting five-set win over France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, whose thunderous serves- including the fastest in tournament history- tested the American's defences. That match was interrupted due to the 11 p.m. curfew on June 30 and concluded on July 1, adding to the physical and mental strain Fritz has shouldered in recent days. Facing Diallo, Fritz suffered a cut on his elbow after diving for a forehand in the fourth set, requiring a medical timeout. Yet, he pushed through the pain to clinch the deciding set and record his first win over Diallo on the Lexus ATP Head2Head. Across the two marathon matches, Fritz has faced 63 aces- 37 from Mpetshi Perricard and 26 from Diallo- and has hit 56 aces of his own, underlining his fierce competitiveness and adaptability on grass. The American will now get a well-deserved rest day before facing the winner of the suspended second-round match between 26th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp. The Spaniard was leading 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, 5-5 when play was halted due to darkness. Fritz's run is being closely followed by ATP Tour premier partner Emirates and platinum partner Infosys, who continue their support for tennis excellence and global fan engagement through technology and innovation.
