Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Al Nassr until 2027
Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Al Nassr until 2027 Ronaldo's contract extension puts an end to months of speculation over where the superstar will play next season. File photo: Reuters Cristiano Ronaldo inked a two-year extension with Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr, the club has announced, following months of speculation over which team he would sign for next season. "Cristiano Ronaldo is staying at @AlNassrFC until 2027," the club wrote in a post on X. Minutes before the official confirmation, the team posted a teaser video, with the 40-year-old Ronaldo walking along a beachfront and saying: "Al Nassr forever". Ronaldo later posted a message on his Instagram, confirming the extension. "A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together," read the post. The Portuguese superstar arrived in 2023 in the kingdom to play with the club, heralding a rush of players in the latter stages of their careers to the oil-rich country. Last month, Ronaldo posted "This chapter is over" hours after the Saudi Pro League wrapped up with Al Nassr finishing third and trophyless once again. "Ronaldo's presence is a key factor in developing the Saudi league in the last two years and a half. He opens the door for elite and young players to come to Saudi Arabia," a source from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), a major investor in Saudi football, told AFP last month. The oil-funded PIF, the sovereign wealth fund behind a number of big-ticket Saudi investments, controls a group of Pro League clubs including Al Nassr, Al Hilal and Al Ahli. Ronaldo's announcement in May came just months after Brazilian star Neymar ended his injury-plagued 18-month stay in January, after playing just seven times for Al Hilal – on a reported salary of around US$104 million a year. Although Ronaldo was the Pro League's top scorer with 25 goals, he has been unable to win a Saudi or continental trophy with Al Nassr, who lost in the Asian Champions League semi-finals last month. Last year, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said he could end his career with Al Nassr, the Riyadh team favoured by a number of Saudi royals. (AFP)

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘coming to Hong Kong' but date not yet fixed
Cristiano Ronaldo 'is coming to Hong Kong,' spokespersons for the football superstar have said, as his CR7 Life Museum is set to open in the city next month. The date of the 40-year-old Portugal captain's visit has yet to be fixed, Tomás Froes, a representative of the CR7 Family Office, said on Thursday during a press conference that announced the opening date of the CR7 Life Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui on July 7. 'He hasn't yet decided where he'll continue to play. It will be announced very soon, probably today,' Luis Parafita, also a representative of the CR7 Family Office, said during the same press conference. 'What I can tell you right now – and we know the responsibility of what I'm just going to say – is that he's coming to Hong Kong,' Parafita said. 'That is happening.' When asked if Ronaldo will play in the August tournament in Hong Kong, Froes declined to reveal the star's schedule, saying it would be 'surprise [upon] surprise.' Ronaldo's schedule will be arranged after the footballer decides which team he will play for in the next season, Parafita said. According to the BBC, Ronaldo is close to agreeing to a new contract with Saudi club Al-Nassr, which he has played for since January 2023. Ronaldo posted on social media last month, saying that 'this chapter is over' following Al-Nassr's defeat by Al-Fateh to finish third in the Saudi Pro League. His contract with the club is due to expire at the end of June. Al-Nassr will be one of four Saudi Arabian teams playing in Hong Kong between August 19 and 23 for the Saudi Super Cup, a pre-season tournament of the Saudi Pro League. Second museum The museum, to be located in the K11 Musea shopping mall in Tsim Sha Tsui, will cover an area of 12,000 square feet and feature trophies from Ronaldo's football career, as well as exhibits from his life. It is the second instalment of the CR7 Museum, after the first one opened in 2013 in Ronaldo's birthplace, Funchal, Portugal. Unlike its Portuguese precursor, the Hong Kong museum is set to run for only a year. Organisers expect the Hong Kong museum will attract more than two million visitors. Having scored more than 900 career goals for his clubs and Portugal, Ronaldo is widely considered one of the greatest football players in history.

Ten-man Real Madrid show class in Pachuca win
Ten-man Real Madrid show class in Pachuca win Victory leaves Real Madrid on top of Group H after two matches played. Photo: Reuters Real Madrid shrugged off an early red card to defeat Mexico's Pachuca 3-1 and take a big step towards the knockout stage of the Club World Cup. The result leaves Madrid, under new head coach Xabi Alonso, on top of Group H with four points while Pachuca are eliminated after two defeats. Saudi club Al Hilal, who split the points with Real in the opener, lost a chance to move to second after being held by Salzburg later on Sunday. Real were in trouble after just seven minutes when Raul Sencio was shown a straight red card after he pulled down Salomon Rondon with the Venezuelan clear on goal. That left the Liga MX team sensing the chance for an upset in front of 70,248 fans at the home of the NFL's Carolina Panthers. Pachuca quickly went close when Brazilian Kenedy saw a shot parried out by Thibaut Courtois and the Belgian keeper did brilliantly to deny Alan Bautista's follow up shot. But Real were able to get a grip on the game in midfield and slow the pace down, and t was a superbly worked team goal that provided the breakthrough for them in the 35th minute. Gonzalo Garcia's clever flick released Fran Garcia down the left and he looked inside to Jude Bellingham who took the ball in his stride and then buried a left-foot shot into the corner. They doubled their advantage two minutes before the break, when Trent Alexander-Arnold drilled a low cross in from the right and Arda Guler collected Gonzalo's deft lay-off and fired home. Javier Eduardo Lopez missed the best opportunity for the Mexican side in the second half, and the outcome was put beyond doubt in the 70th minute when Federico Valverde slid the ball home after a smart exchange with Brahim Diaz. Pachuca finally got some reward for their determined effort when Elias Montiel's shot on the turn was deflected off Aurelien Tchouameni and flew past the wrong-footed Courtois. (AFP)
