2025 elections: 9M Iraqis barred from voting

Shafaq News19-04-2025
Shafaq News/ Nearly nine million Iraqis are unable to vote in the upcoming 2025 parliamentary elections, the Strategic Center for Human Rights in Iraq said on Saturday.
Hazem al-Rudaini, the center's deputy director, noted that the total number of eligible voters—including those born in 2007 who recently reached voting age—stands at 29.1 million. However, only around 20 million have completed biometric registration, a legal requirement to cast a ballot in the October 11 elections.
'This leaves roughly 9 million Iraqis without the right to vote,' he explained, urging the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) to extend the registration deadline by another month to allow more citizens to update their data. He also called for a nationwide awareness campaign involving the government, media, and civil society groups.

Ayatollah Khamenei: Israel's war aimed to topple Iranian regime

Shafaq News – Tehran On Wednesday, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei accused Israel of launching a military campaign aimed at toppling the Iranian leadership, warning that Tehran is prepared to respond with greater force to any future attacks. In a televised address, Khamenei described last month's 12-day war as a direct attempt to destabilize Iran's government, adding that the effort failed to achieve its objectives. 'Iran is capable of delivering a stronger blow to its enemies than what it carried out during last month's conflict with Israel,' he noted, emphasizing the country's military readiness. Khamenei also labeled Israel a 'cancerous tumor,' holding the United States responsible for backing Israeli military actions. Highlighting the importance of national unity, Khamenei called on Iranians to uphold it as a collective duty. 'The Iranian people will never appear weak,' he remarked. 'We possess all the necessary tools.'

Druze leader urges escalated Israeli strikes on Syria

Shafaq News – Damascus On Wednesday, Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif, the spiritual leader of Israel's Druze community, described Syria's transitional president Ahmad al-Sharaa as 'a murderer no different from Hamas or ISIS,' urging the Israeli government to intensify airstrikes against Syrian military positions in Suwayda. Speaking to Yedioth Ahronoth, Tarif confirmed ongoing discussions with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz concerning the recent escalation, calling for expanded military operations. These comments followed an appeal by the Druze spiritual leadership for international intervention to halt the violence in southern Syria. In a statement posted on Facebook, the leadership appealed to 'the free world and all influential powers,' naming US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Jordan's King Abdullah II. 'Save Suwayda,' the statement emphasized, noting that although the Druze had never seen themselves as adversaries of other communities, they could no longer live under a regime that rules solely through force. The statement described the appeal as 'humanitarian and ethical,' distancing it from political motives. Heavy clashes continue in Suwayda between Syrian government forces, supported by tribal and Bedouin fighters, and local Druze militants, with control of frontlines remaining uncertain. Syrian troops have intensified artillery and rocket strikes on residential neighborhoods, resulting in civilian casualties and widespread damage. Residents describe the city as a 'ghost town' amid worsening humanitarian conditions. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported at least 248 fatalities since the fighting began, including civilians and combatants. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes targeted Syrian army positions in rural Suwayda and near Thaala airbase, hitting military convoys during their withdrawal.
