Cristiano Ronaldo makes 'very difficult' Lionel Messi claim with time almost up
Cristiano Ronaldo has not ruled out playing alongside long-time rival Lionel Messi before the end of his career, but has admitted it would be very difficult to do so, with time running out. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United superstar is set to see his contract with Al Nassr expire at the end of the month.
Both Ronaldo, 40, and Messi, 37, are likely in the twilight years of their careers with the former playing in the Saudi Pro League and the latter in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami. Nevertheless Ronaldo finished as top goalscorer in his division, while Messi has 10 goals in his 12 starts this season.
Seeing the GOAT contenders playing in the same colours appears unlikely even with Ronaldo possibly eyeing a fresh move however. Although, the ex-Juventus sharpshooter did find some interest from Argentina ahead of the Club World Cup in the United States.
It is clear Ronaldo has respect for the nation and his adversary however. Asked about the prospect, Ronaldo provided a thoughtful answer.
"You know I have a lot of affection for Argentina, my wife is from there," Ronaldo replied. "I have already been invited to play in the Club World Cup for an Argentine club.
"You never know… the time is there. I am already 40 years old, but you never know. But I think it is very difficult. I have never been to Argentina, I want to go, I have a lot of affection for the Argentines.
"And I have affection for Messi, we were rivals for many years, but I have already said that we were in that scenario for 15 years and I remember that before he didn't speak any English, I don't know if he does now. And I translated for him when they explained to us what we had to do at a gala.
"I have affection for him, he has always treated me well and respected me as I respect him. I find it very difficult, but you never know."
With less than a month remaining on Ronaldo's deal, there has been no shortage of speculation over his next step. To some degree, there was an expectation a deal would be set up to see him play in the Club World Cup, but Ronaldo has now suggested the possibility of that is noow over.
"It's irrelevant, at this moment it doesn't make sense to talk about other things other than the national team," he said. "There have been a lot of contacts, I see things that make sense, others that don't, as the other guy says, you can't go to everything, you have to think short, medium and long term.
"It's a decision that has practically been made on my part, which is not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had a lot of invitations."

Inter Miami's Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba out of All-Star Game
July 23 - Major League Soccer revealed its roster of the 29 players available for selection in the All-Star Game on Wednesday in Austin, Texas. Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi and teammate Jordi Alba are not on the list, however. Messi, the league's co-leading scorer and reigning MVP, and Alba initially were selected to represent the MLS in its match against a team of All-Stars from Mexico's Liga MX. MLS rules dictate that players who are not injured and opt against participating in the All-Star Game will be suspended for one league match. Should that be the case, Messi would be in line to miss Inter Miami's home match on Saturday night against FC Cincinnati. Speaking of FC Cincinnati, their midfielder Evander will serve as the captain of the MLS All-Stars for Wednesday's match after winning a fan vote. Evander has 15 goals and eight assists to pace FC Cincinnati. Below is the MLS' roster of players available for Wednesday's match: Goalkeepers: Dayne St. Clair (Minnesota United FC); Brad Stuver (Austin FC); Yohei Takaoka (Vancouver Whitecaps FC) Defenders: Max Arfsten (Columbus Crew); Guilherme Biro (Austin FC); Tristan Blackmon (Vancouver Whitecaps FC); Michael Boxall (Minnesota United FC); Alex Freeman (Orlando City SC); Jakob Glesnes (Philadelphia Union); Andy Najar (Nashville SC); Miles Robinson (FC Cincinnati); Kai Wagner (Philadelphia Union) Midfielders: Sebastian Berhalter (Vancouver Whitecaps FC); Cristian Espinoza (San Jose Earthquakes); Evander (FC Cincinnati); Carles Gil (New England Revolution); Diego Luna (Real Salt Lake); Hany Mukhtar (Nashville SC); Jeppe Tverskov (San Diego FC); Obed Vargas (Seattle Sounders FC); Philip Zinckernagel (Chicago Fire FC) Forwards: Tai Baribo (Philadelphia Union); Denis Bouanga (LAFC); Anders Dreyer (San Diego FC); Chucky Lozano (San Diego FC); Marco Pasalic (Orlando City SC); Diego Rossi (Columbus Crew); Sam Surridge (Nashville SC); Brian White (Vancouver Whitecaps FC) --Field Level Media

Fishing for Rod Real Madrid ready to make £100MILLION bid to lure Man City star Rodri to Bernabeu in huge blow to Pep Guardiola Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) REAL Madrid are ready to make a £100m bid to lure Manchester City star Rodri to the Bernabeu this summer. New Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has targeted the Spain midfielder as his priority after Real were destroyed by PSG in their Club World Cup semi-final earlier this month. Rodri, 29, was out from September until the last week of the season after suffering major ACL and meniscus injuries in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal. He made one start and three appearances off the bench in the Club World Cup but only lasted 37 minutes after his arrival as City were shocked by Al Hilal in the last 16 before suffering a fresh problem. Uncertainty over his true physical condition is one element that might persuade Real to wait and see, with his City contract due to expire in 2027. But Alonso is understood to be pushing the Madrid hierarchy to tempt City with a bid for the 29-year-old now, knowing that the Etihad side would be likely to be keen to tie Rodri to a long-term extension if his fitness holds up. Real feel that former Atletico star Rodri, who was born in the Spanish capital and moved to the Prem in a £62.8m deal six years ago, would be open to a return 'home'. Alonso was stunned by the frailties of his midfield in that PSG mauling, when they could not get to grips with the movement and intensity of Vitinha, Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz. City signed Spain's Nico Gonzalez from Porto for £50m in January and added Dutchman Tijjani Reijnders before the Club World Cup before landing Norwegian teenager Sverre Nypan last week. Whether they can adequately replace Rodri is unclear and Guardiola seems unlikely to be open to a sale but Madrid are ready to test the waters in the closing weeks of the summer window. 4 4 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

George Baldock drowned in pool day before he was due to fly home for son's birthday
Former Sheffield United star George Baldock died at his home in Athens last October and an inquest into his death heard no drugs or alcohol were found in his system Ex-Premier League star George Baldock drowned in the swimming pool at his Athens home just a day before he was due to fly home for his son's first birthday, an inquest into his death heard. Baldock, 31, was found dead in the Greek capital where he was plying his trade for Panathinaikos. The former Sheffield United defender had no drugs or alcohol in his system and there was no evidence of criminal activity, the court in Buckinghamshire was told. His death has been ruled an accident. The inquest also heard that Baldock had a very large heart 'that would have meant that he was susceptible to heart arrythmias' - an irregular heartbeat, either too fast or too slow. Baldock had played a club fixture just three days before the incident. His worried fiancee raised the alarm after failing to contact him, before the owner of the house he was living him found his body in the pool. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, Baldock could not be saved. "George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, team-mate and person," his family said in a statement. "Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands. "We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son." Baldock came through the youth ranks at MK Dons and played 125 times for the club over an eight-year period, scoring twice and winning their player of the season award in 2015-16. He had loan spells at Northampton, Tamworth and Oxford while with the Dons, but he made his name at Bramall Lane after moving to Sheffield United in 2017. In seven years with the Blades, he established himself as a fan favourite scoring six times from right-back in 219 appearances. He helped United to the Premier League twice, finishing runners-up in the Championship in both 2018-19 and 2022-23. Baldock left for Panathinaikos in the summer of 2024 and played just four times for his new club before the tragic incident. He qualified to play for Greece through his grandmother and made his debut in a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland at Windsor Park in June 2022. In all, he would earn 12 senior caps. Greece played against England at Wembley the day after his death with the match going ahead despite his grief-stricken teammates only learning of his passing the previous night. Tributes were paid before the game which Greece won 2-1. Baldock's shirt was held aloft after their first goal and following the full-time whistle.
