Saudi Arabia: SFDA Penalizes Food Safety Violators

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has taken punitive measures against erring food establishments in various regions of Saudi Arabia. It affirmed zero tolerance for any violations affecting food safety.
Inspection teams from SFDA, in coordination with relevant government agencies, detected a number of violations related to food safety and quality as part of their ongoing inspections of food establishments. This inspection aims to enhance proactive oversight and limit any practices that lead to contamination or food poisoning.
The inspections resulted in the seizure of more than two tons of food of unknown origin, in addition to the destruction of approximately 200 kg of spoiled products unfit for human consumption. Large quantities of food stored in conditions that do not comply with health requirements and standards were also detected at a residential site run by expatriate workers. The workers were arrested and legal action was taken against them.
In a related development, the SFDA halted production lines at a food factory after seizing approximately 150 kg of products of unknown origin. The inspection tours revealed several violations affecting product safety, including the possession of unknown raw materials and a clear decline in hygiene standards, which led to spreading of insects inside the raw materials warehouse, along with rust in food preparation equipment, the use of ineffective insect traps, and the presence of expired materials in the production hall. The emergency door was also found as a direct passage for workers to the production area, in violation of safe entry standards for food establishments.
These measures are part of the precautionary oversight process aimed at protecting consumers and highlight the effectiveness of coordination and integration between relevant authorities in ensuring establishments' compliance with safety and quality standards.
The authority reiterated that it has taken all necessary legal measures against violators, noting that violating the Food Law and its executive regulations is punishable by imprisonment for a period not exceeding ten years or a fine of up to SR10 million, or both. The authority stressed its continued efforts to monitor food establishments' compliance with regulatory requirements, calling for reporting any violations via the unified number 19999.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has imposed fines amounting to more than SR4 million on 19 erring pharmaceutical firms during the last month of May. The SFDA explained that these establishments failed to comply with the authority's Drug Track and Trace System (RSD) for pharmaceutical products. The authority said that 16 pharmaceutical establishments are found that they did not directly report the movement of medicines through the electronic RSD system, and this is a violation of the approved systems for tracking medicines from production to delivery to the consumer. It added that two establishments failed to ensure their registered pharmaceutical products were available on the market, while one establishment failed to report any shortage or interruption in the supply of medicines at least six months prior to the expected interruption in supply. This constitutes a clear violation of the requirements for ensuring the availability of medicines to consumers. This punitive measure was part of the authority's oversight efforts to ensure that establishments provide medicines and report their movement through the electronic RSD system. The SFDA confirmed that the RSD system aims to enhance the integrity of pharmaceutical supply chains and ensure the availability of medicines to citizens and residents.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has imposed a fine of SR112,000 on a pharmaceutical warehouse in Riyadh and referred the case to the Public Prosecution, after uncovering serious breaches of pharmaceutical regulations. In a statement, the authority explained that the warehouse was found in possession of pharmaceutical products sourced from an unlicensed entity, in clear violation of the rules governing the circulation and distribution of medical products in the Kingdom. Further investigations revealed that the facility transported pharmaceutical items using unapproved methods, failing to meet required standards for handling sensitive medical goods. The SFDA warned that such practices can expose medications to harmful conditions, compromising their efficacy, stability, or safety. The warehouse was also found trading counterfeit pharmaceutical products, which led to the case being referred to the Public Prosecution. These actions fall under violations listed in Paragraph (2) of Article 34 of the Pharmaceutical and Herbal Products Facilities Law. The law stipulates that individuals who sell, dispense, or possess counterfeit, spoiled, expired, or unregistered pharmaceutical or herbal products with intent to trade may face up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to SR10 million, or both. The SFDA reiterated its commitment to strict enforcement of national health standards and urged all pharmaceutical entities to adhere to licensed sourcing channels and approved transportation methods to ensure the safety and effectiveness of medical products distributed across the Kingdom.
