Real Madrid delay Barca celebrations with late Liga win over Mallorca

Real Madrid snatched a last-gasp 2-1 win over Real Mallorca on Wednesday in La Liga to delay Barcelona's title celebrations.
Los Blancos cut the gap on the Catalan giants to four points ahead of Barcelona's visit to neighbours Espanyol on Thursday, where they can wrap up the title with a victory.
Trailing for much of the game after Martin Valjent's 11th-minute opener, two second-half goals for Madrid ensured their arch-rivals did not claim their 28th La Liga title just yet.
Madrid needed to win to deny Barca and Kylian Mbappe's equaliser and Jacobo Ramon's 95th-minute strike allowed them to do just that.
Los Blancos' defeat by Barcelona on Sunday in the Clasico left the Catalans on the brink of the title but Carlo Ancelotti's side showed fighting spirit in the final stages against Mallorca.

"The team played very well, it fought a lot, played with a lot of intensity and it was a totally deserved victory," said Ancelotti.
"We are happy because we want to finish the season well and this game didn't start well but afterwards we did very well in all senses."
Madrid coach Ancelotti is departing to take charge of the Brazilian national team at the end of a disappointing season in the Spanish capital, and has two games left in his post.
The Italian's Madrid side, riddled with injury problems, were without Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes among other star names as Mallorca visited the Santiago Bernabeu.
"Having 12 players injured is very strange, we were able to overcome the absences with a good attitude, individually and as a group," added Ancelotti.
The islanders, ninth, are hoping for European football for the first time since 2004 and put up a strong performance.
Madrid's 18-year-old striker Endrick, whom Ancelotti may call up for Brazil in the future, came close early on but Leo Roman tipped his effort away.
Mallorca took an early lead when Valjent received the ball on the right of the box in an ocean of space.
The defender took his shot early and beat Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, making his 200th La Liga appearance.
Roman made a fine save to thwart England international Jude Bellingham as Madrid pushed for an equaliser.
The stopper, who also excelled for Mallorca in a recent narrow defeat at Barcelona, denied Mbappe and then Fede Valverde before the break.
Eventually Mbappe found a breakthrough for Madrid after 68 minutes, with some superb footwork to escape three Mallorca players trying to shut him down, and he drilled past Roman.
It was Mbappe's 40th goal of a productive season on a personal level, although his team are set to end it without a major trophy and having been beaten four times by Barcelona across all competitions.
Good for the academy
Mateu Morey should have put Mallorca back ahead almost instantly after a Jacobo error, but Courtois denied him one-on-one.
Roman produced yet another fine save from Arda Guler's drive before Valjent headed Mbappe's effort off the line and to safety with the goalkeeper out of position.
It looked like despite Madrid's efforts they were not going to find a winner but 20-year-old defender Jacobo lifted a dropping ball over Roman's head as the Mallorca defence hesitated.
Barcelona took 40 shots in their 1-0 win over Mallorca in April and Madrid produced 39.
"Leo Roman had a great game," said his opposite number Courtois.
"(Jacobo) was confident and in the end he scored that goal... it's very good for the youth academy, there are a lot of kids trying to get through.
"When they have to be there, they are, we Madrid fans have to be proud of the academy."

Club World Cup: Manchester City crash out in stunning fashion
Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal sent English giants Manchester City crashing out of the Club World Cup on Monday, snatching a shock 4-3 victory in extra time in the biggest upset of the tournament so far. The match finished 2-2 at full-time but at the end of an eventful extra-time Marcos Leonardo grabbed the winner and pulled off one of the greatest wins in Middle Eastern football history. The Saudi club advance to the quarter-finals where they will face Brazilian club Fluminense, ensuring a non-European team will reach the last four. Manchester City had taken the lead in the ninth minute in controversial fashion, Bernardo Silva finishing after Rayan Ait-Nouri's cross. Al Hilal players protested Ait-Nouri had controlled with his arm in the build-up but the goal stood. Manchester City had plenty of opportunities to extend their lead before the break but a combination of poor finishing and inspired goalkeeping from Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou kept the lead at a single goal. Al Hilal offered several reminders of their threat on the break, but Manchester City even more chances with Jeremy Doku volleying straight at Bounou who moments later reacted superbly again to keep out a Bernardo effort. The question as to whether Manchester City would live to regret not converting those chances was answered within a minute of the resumption. Former Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo's low cross was parried out by Ederson, Malcolm pounced but saw his shot blocked by Ruben Dias only for the ball to loop to Marcos Leonardo to head home the equaliser. Six minutes later and the Manchester City's high defensive line was exposed by a long ball from Cancelo which Brazilian Malcolm raced on to and he showed power and pace as he broke away before coolly slotting past Ederson. The Saudi fans in the crowd went wild while Pep Guardiola responded immediately with a triple substitution with midfielder Rodri and defenders Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji introduced. That brought some much needed stability to a shaky back line, but Manchester City needed improvement at the other end too and it came, albeit in it scruffy circumstances. The Al Hilal defence were unable to deal with a Bernardo corner and Erling Haaland pounced to steer home the lose ball and make it 2-2. Manchester City piled on the pressure as they looked for the winner but yet again Bounou proved their nemesis as he denied Akanji and Ruben Dias and even when he was beaten by Haaland, substitute Ali Lajami produced a magnificent goal-line clearance. Guardiola took off Haaland and introduced Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush as the game went into extra-time. But for all Manchester City's depth, Al Hilal had a deep well of spirit to draw upon and just four minutes into the opening period Al Hilal regained the lead when Kalidou Koulibaly rose superbly to meet a Ruben Neves corner with a brilliantly angled header. Manchester City responded with a goal of real quality when Rayan Cherki's brilliantly floated ball towards the back post was poked home masterfully by Phil Foden, at full stretch and from the tightest of angles. But incredibly Al Hilal responded again to restore their lead – Sergej Milinkovic-Savic's header was saved by Ederson but Marcos Leonardo followed in to bundle the ball over the line. As the celebrating Al Hilal fans poured out of the stadium, the Brazilian striker let his emotions pour out. 'I've had a difficult time in the last two months. My mother spent 70 days in the ICU,' he said. 'Today she's fine, thank God. When I scored those two goals, I thought of her. She was able to watch the match'. Manchester City skipper Bernardo Silva said his team had paid the price for being unable to deal with Al Hilal's counter-attacking. 'We scored three and could've scored five, six. It was all about controlling when we lost the ball, controlling the transitions, don't let them run, and they ran way too many times,' he said. 'With one, two passes there was always a feeling of danger coming from them. When we allow teams to run like this we always suffer a lot, and today was the case,' he said. Jordy Smith heads HOME to J-Bay ranked no.1 in the world
South Africa's Jordy Smith retains his ranking of no.1 in the world after grinding out another solid Quarter-Final result in Brazil. Better still, in less than two weeks' time, the big bru will be surfing in front of his adoring home fans in the coveted yellow jersey, at his favourite wave on earth – J-Bay! The current no.1 in the world didn't have things his own way this weekend in Saquarema, Brazil, coming up against fired-up opposition and tricky surf conditions. It's fair to say, after assuming the ranking of no.1 in the world in Western Australia, that Smith would have a big yellow target on his back. And so it proved at the home of Brazilian surfing in Rio … The 37-year old opened up as best he could in Brazil, but J-Bay will offer up the huge walls he specialises in. Image: Jordy Smith on Instagram While Smith couldn't move past the Quarter Finals, a series of favourable results meant the big South African keeps no.1 in the world for J-Bay. Many surf fans anticipated he'd struggle in the shifty Brazilian beach break in front of a hugely partisan home crowd. So, for Smith to retain no.1 in the world is actually a superb outcome. A hard-fought win in the Round of 16 against Hawaiian Seth Moniz set up a quarter-final rematch with Griffin Colapinto. Smith defeated the Californian in the final at Margaret River to become no.1 in the world. Understandably, the 26-year old came out firing against the tour veteran. Taking to the air repeatedly in a slow heat, it was evident that Smith's signature brand of power surfing wouldn't prevail this time around. Odds-on Brazilian favourites, Yago Dora (2) and Italo Ferreira (4), were also ousted in the Quarter Finals. And the next-best-placed surfer to climb the rankings, Australia's Ethan Ewing (5) fell out at the Semi-Final stage.
