AIKS opposes promotion of gene-edited crop varieties

The Hindu30-05-2025
The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) has written a letter to the Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressing its strong opposition to the introduction, promotion, and commercialisation of gene-edited crop varieties, including rice, in agricultural systems.
In the letter dated Friday, Andhra Pradesh Ryotu Sangham (AIKS) president G. Eswaraiah and general secretary K.V.V. Prasad said that they were deeply concerned that these developments were being pursued without sufficient consultation with farmers, independent scientific assessment, or transparent public debate. The entry of gene-edited seeds threatens to create new forms of dependency for farmers while offering no proven long-term benefits.
In the past, the AIKS expressed its concerns about Bt cotton and Bt Brinjal. Even though Bt cotton was effective for a few years, later it failed in controlling pests. Lakhs of farmers sustained huge losses. As Seed Bill 2004 was not passed, in the absence of a proper crop insurance scheme, farmers were not compensated resulting in suicidal deaths.
''Enact strict liability laws to hold seed and biotech companies accountable for economic and environmental harm caused by their products. Our bitter experience with Bt cotton should not be forgotten. Farmers must not be turned into passive consumers of corporate-controlled technologies. True agricultural development lies in empowering farmers through self-reliance. We hope the Ministry will heed this call and take steps to protect the rights, livelihoods, and dignity of India's farmers,' they added.

India, Nepal review security cooperation, agree to strengthen border management

NEW DELHI: Strengthening of mutual cooperation to curb trans-border criminal activities, improve border infrastructure and ensure effective disaster management dominated discussions at the Indo-Nepal home secretary-level talks held here on Tuesday. Leading the Indian side was Union home secretary Govind Mohan, while the Nepali side was led by his counterpart Gokarna Mani Duwadee. During the talks, both sides reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral security cooperation as well as border management and agreed to strengthen it further, the home ministry said in a release on Wednesday. The deliberations included issues related to the repair and maintenance of boundary pillars; trans-border criminal activities; working of border district coordination committees; and strengthening of border infrastructure, particularly integrated check posts (ICPs), roads and railway networks. The home ministry release said empowerment and capacity building of various security-related institutions, and ways to strengthen cooperation in disaster risk reduction and management, were also taken up for discussion. Both the sides welcomed the finalisation of the text of the agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and agreed to work towards early conclusion of the revised extradition treaty. The unfenced Indo-Nepal border is prone to being exploited by criminals, including terrorists, to escape scrutiny and investigation by the law enforcement agencies, particularly on the Indian side. It was agreed that the next home secretary level talks will be held in Nepal at a mutually convenient date.

Kerala will bear land acquisition cost of Sabari Rail project: Minister tells Parliament

Clearing the ambiguity over the financing of the Sabari Rail project, the Union Railway Ministry has made it clear that Kerala will acquire the land required for the project using the State share, ie 50% of the project cost. The State government has agreed to acquire land using its share of 50% of the project cost. Once land acquisition by the State started, work on the project could be taken forward, said Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in reply to a question in Parliament on Wednesday. To a specific question whether the Union government had any plans to extend the railway line to Thiruvananthapuram to connect the Vizhinjam International Seaport, the Minister made it clear that there was no relation between the Sabarimala rail project and the Vizhinjam International Seaport. There had been ambiguity regarding sharing the cost of the project as the State had been maintaining that the liability incurred by it by financing the project through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) should be fully exempted from the State's borrowing limit. The Union government then suggested a tripartite agreement to implement the project, involving the State government, the Ministry of Railways, and the Reserve Bank of India. However, in the memorandum submitted by the Kerala government to the Railway Minister on June 3, the State government made it clear that it would not agree to enter into a tripartite agreement as suggested by the Union government. High-level committee During a meeting between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Mr. Vaishnaw in June, the Union Minister had promised that a high-level committee from the Railway ministry would visit the project site in July as part of reviving the project. However, the committee had not yet visited Kerala, though the State government had directed District Collectors of Ernakulam, Idukki, and Kottayam to restore the land acquisition units and to finalise the revised alignment of the railway line to speed up implementation of the project, said government sources. As per the revised estimate, the project will cost ₹3,810.69 crore. The 110-km Angamaly-Erumely route was first announced in the 1997-98 Railway Budget. Land acquisition had been completed in 8 km, while the work on the 7-km stretch between Angamaly and Kalady was completed earlier.

MP pitches national maritime university in Mangaluru

Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta met Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal in Delhi on Wednesday and appealed to set up a national maritime university in Mangaluru and name it after Rani Abbakka, the legendary Tuluva queen who fought against foreign rule. The meeting follows detailed discussion Capt. Chowta had with the Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways T.K. Ramachandran in Delhi on Tuesday during which the MP had strongly pitched for Mangaluru to house the university proposed by him. According to Capt. Chowta, the university proposed aims to serve as a world-class centre for maritime education, research, and innovation, while commemorating the legacy of Rani Abbakka, a naval warrior. In a letter submitted to the Minister the MP said that Mangaluru offers ideal conditions for hosting a national-level maritime university. The Western coast's importance in trade, national security and the blue economy further reinforces the strategic merit of the location, that is Mangaluru. '...I request to constitute an expert committee to explore and recommend a framework for the university, ask New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) to prepare a detailed project report and initiate an inter-Ministerial and stakeholder consultations as appropriate...,' the letter said. Capt. Chowta said: '...India's maritime sector is undergoing a transformational phase – transitioning towards cleaner fuels like LNG and methanol, integrating AI-based technologies for vessel and cargo management, and expanding deep draft and trans shipment port capacities. This dynamic environment requires a future-ready workforce trained in disciplines such as marine engineering, maritime law, port and terminal management and maritime informatics...' The MP said that if the university came up it will cater to the needs mentioned by him through a comprehensive academic portfolio including BBA, MBA, and diploma programmes. 'It will serve as a critical institutional anchor to nurture skilled professionals, foster innovation and research and support policy development for India's maritime advancement.' Capt. Chowta said that setting up the university will be timely now as 2025 marks the 500th birth anniversary of Rani Abbakka and coincides with the golden jubilee of NMPA.
