'And Just Like That': Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis unpack that heartbreaking scene
NEW YORK — Somewhere between the antacid tablets and protein shakes, Charlotte York hit her breaking point.
In Season 3's sixth episode of 'And Just Like That…,' released July 3, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) spots her best friend Charlotte (Kristin Davis) trying to go incognito in Walgreens, where she's shopping for Depends. Asked why she needs adult incontinence underwear, Charlotte tearfully reveals that they're for her husband, Harry (Evan Handler), who has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer but doesn't want anyone to know.
'Oh, honey, honey. Here, sweetie, look at me,' Carrie says, grabbing Charlotte's hand. 'You tell me anything, alright? Any thought, big or small. I will not tell a soul. I promise, I'm your vault.'
'They found it early, but I can't stop thinking that he's going to die,' Charlotte admits, her voice cracking as she breaks out in sobs. 'That's why I've been such a mess.'

The emotional episode ends with Carrie holding Charlotte as she bawls in her arms. It's a tender, unvarnished moment that harks back to the very best of HBO's 'Sex and the City,' when Carrie and Charlotte supported their pal, Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), through breast cancer, and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) helped her on-and-off-again beau, Steve (David Eigenberg), through testicular cancer.
'I was really worried about that scene,' says Davis, who tested positive for COVID the morning she was supposed to shoot it. The poignant exchange was postponed for several months, until the very end of filming, meaning 'I had to go back emotionally to where I had been on that day.'
For any actor, 'that's always hard when you know you have a scene like that and it keeps getting pushed,' Parker says. 'What you really want to do is shoot the scene and be done with it, when you have something that is going to require you to feel so vulnerable and cry. But she did a beautiful job.'
Michael Patrick King, who created 'And Just Like That…,' says that the costars' real-life friendship helped bring gravity to 'a very scary moment' for Charlotte.
'Because Kristin and Sarah Jessica have worked together for so long, the trust is there,' King says. 'In that scene, Kristin really just lets go, and Sarah Jessica is there holding her.'
As the season goes on, Charlotte's storyline unfolds 'in really funny and unexpected ways,' Davis teases. 'Carrie throws Charlotte a birthday party to cheer her up and everything unravels. Charlotte has also been holding in so much, trying to keep everything going while she takes care of Harry. She hasn't really been taking care of herself, so she ends up having some health issues that end in a comedic way, thank God.'
Elsewhere in the episode, Charlotte's new friend, Lisa (Nicole Ari Parker), unexpectedly loses her dad (Billy Dee Williams) to a stroke. In the days to follow, Lisa clashes with her thespian stepmom (Jenifer Lewis) about the over-the-top funeral arrangements.
'I grew up (watching) Billy Dee Williams, so I was very sad in real life that we wouldn't do any more work together in this series,' Parker says. Lewis, meanwhile, is 'a blazing talent. God didn't give me a voice, but when I'm with Jenifer Lewis, she lets you believe you can sing. So we'd have dance breaks (on set) – she's just iconic and larger than life.'

‘Squid Game' Creator's Alternate Season 3 Ending Is Way Better
Squid Game If you didn't love Squid Game season 3 or its ending in particular, you're not alone, as in the end, it became something of a muddled mess with unsatisfying ends to many storylines, Gi-hun's included. But we could have fixed that, it seems. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explains the other idea he had for how the series would end in season 3: But this is why he changed it: Not to tell the creator of the series he's wrong, but he's wrong. Gi-hun's ending was a poor finale, given that he ended up killing himself to 'save' the (computer-generated) baby when if another few minutes had passed, the entire game would have ended with the Coast Guard's invasion, and the idea that he or the baby would be killed at all would go out the window. So his sacrifice was really for nothing with the way that ending was structured. Squid Game However, that original ending would have been a much better bookend. In it Gi-hun's ending would mirror the choice he was given at the end of the first season, move on with his life and money, or seek to destroy the game. Seeing the recruiter would tell him the games were still continuing, but even still, he finally chooses his family over pursuing its destruction. That would have been way better! Season 3 ended with a rather dismal 50% audience score, the lowest of any season and a far cry from season 1's 84%. Questions still remain about whether the show will continue, as Hwang has pitched a prequel series starring Gi-hun set between seasons 1 and 2. The door is also open for another future season, and there's a lot of chatter about an American Squid Game spin-off that has yet to be confirmed. Sarah Jessica Parker Responds to ‘And Just like That...' Cheating Plotline
And Just Like That... season 3 just did something so wild that I am literally struggling to cope. In last night's episode, Aidan visits Carrie in New York, and after a very frustrating back and forth about a window, he reveals that he's actually freaking out because he slept with his ex-wife Kathy. It happened in a moment of tension in their family, and they were comforting each other. It's a huge revelation, and is even more ironic considering Carrie's cheating is the reason why Aidan broke up with her during the original series. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Sarah Jessica Parker responded to the choice to have Aidan sleep with his ex-wife, saying that she kind of, sort of understands how this happened. Does she think it was cheating? Here's what she said. "I think if you share a child and that child is in trouble, and you both have distracting amounts of concern and worry, that reaching out for comfort, which might be almost a habit in their marriage, I wouldn't find it overly taxing to understand that and not be outraged by it," she said. A very diplomatic answer! It's all part of the confusion in Carrie and Aidan's relationship this season. Are they together? Are they not? Even they don't seem to know. While Aidan is deeply apologetic about sleeping with Kathy, Carrie seems less upset about it. She wasn't planning on literally waiting for him for five years, even though it seems like that's what he expected. SJP said the lack of clarity is where they went wrong. "This probably happens with people who are really familiar, who are intimately involved and are doing their level best to be decent to one another," she said. "They needed to deconstruct it further. And I think they were both trying to be so good to each other that they didn't pursue what the definition really was. And I think it was because they were trying to honor this idea. If either party had pushed for more meaningful definition, the end result might have been that they wouldn't have agreed to it." Yeah, it feels like there were some big missteps here. It'll be very interesting to see how this shakes out the rest of the season.
