Dad who reported daughter missing on vacation busted when her body found in pond

Metro4 days ago
A father who reported his nine-year-old daughter missing while they were on a vacation together has been arrested after her body was discovered in a pond.
Luciano Frattolin, 45, of Montreal was traveling with his daughter, Melina Frattolin, in upstate New York since July 11 and they were expected back in Canada this past weekend.
Frattolin described Melina as 'the light of his life', 'beautiful', and his 'inspiration' in a post on the website of Montreal-based Gambella Coffee, which he founded. He had also called himself a 'loving father' on his Instagram profile.
On Saturday night, Frattolin called 911 and claimed that his daughter vanished after he stepped out from a wooded area at a parking lot.
Authorities issued an Amber Alert for the public's help in searching for Melina.
However, officials found inconsistencies in Frattolin's accounts.
'During a subsequent interview, he then reports two unknown males forced her into a white van,' stated New York State Police Captain Robert McConnell.
'That lead was thoroughly investigated and disproven.'
CCTV footage recovered from Saratoga Springs, another resort town close to Lake George, captured the dad and daughter there around 5.30pm on Saturday.
Melina talked with her mother, whom she lived with in Montreal, on the phone about an hour later and did not sound distressed, according to police.
Tragically, forest rangers found Melina's body in the shallow section of a pond in Ticonderoga, which is roughly 30 miles north of Lake George, on Sunday afternoon.
Her father is believed to have murdered her after she spoke with her mum, and then called 911, police said.
Frattolin was taken into custody and brought into Essex County Jail shortly after 2am on Monday.
He has been charged with second-degree murder and unlawfully disposing of a corpse. A not guilty was entered for him during his arraignment on Monday, Ticonderoga Town Court officials said. He has been assigned a public defender.
Frattolin did not have a criminal record or reported instances of domestic violence. More Trending
Melina's mother distanced herself from Frattolin in 2019. Frattolin in his bio on his company site mentioned an 'unfortunate event that severely affected his well-being in 2019'.
'Melina has also taught Luciano to let go of his rigid tendencies to keep everything in 'perfect order,'' his bio reads.
'His love for Melina's messy art projects and chaotic ensemble of toys supersedes his love for a meticulously spotless home.'
A motive for the killing has not been determined.

Boy guilty of 'pointless' murder after stabbing victim, 18, through the heart

A boy who carried a Rambo-style knife to show others he was a 'big man' has been found guilty of murdering another teenager. Charles Hartle was 17 when he stabbed Noah Smedley through the heart last December 28 with a knife he had hidden in his tracksuit bottoms. Hartle was wearing a balaclava and 'grinned or smiled before deliberately aiming for and stabbing him in the chest', his trial heard. Now aged 18, he has been found guilty of murder after a two-week trial at Derby crown court. Hartle and his friends had arranged to meet Noah on the night of the murder in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Noah arrived riding an electric scooter and sold cannabis to the group, before Hartle turned on him and stabbed him in the chest. Hartle ran away from the scene, meeting his girlfriend at a house party where witnesses saw him confess what he'd done and showed her the knife – which has never been recovered. He then went to Derby city centre to distance himself from the crime scene. Noah had been found injured in the street by members of the public at about 8.20pm, but he was pronounced dead shortly before 9pm. In the hours after the murder, Hartle threw away his clothes, the knife, and his phone, before handing himself in to police. In a prepared statement he said he had acted in self defence, claiming Noah was 'about to lunge at me' and he 'instinctively lashed out'. Detective Constable Emma Barnes-Marriott said: 'Noah was an unarmed teenager, who was simply meeting with friends on the night Charles Hartle decided to end his life. 'Noah did not threaten Hartle and showed nothing but friendliness towards him that evening, and yet he was brutally murdered. 'Charles Hartle is a callous and calculating young man, who has shown no recognition or remorse for taking another teenager's life. 'He carried a knife with the intention to use it, over what appears to be a petty disagreement that only he was aware of, and a sense of bravado. 'I'd like to thank Noah's family for their support during our investigation and the trial. More Trending 'No family should have to go through the ordeal of losing a loved one, especially at such a young age, and to have to relive their last moments at trial is an additional blow that Hartle could have spared them from. 'Instead, despite overwhelming evidence, he remained silent and refused to take responsibility for Noah's murder. 'I know that nothing will bring Noah back but hope that today's verdict has provided his family with some comfort that justice has been done.' Hartle is set to be sentenced at the same court on August 22. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page. Scotland's gang war 'halted as Mr Big running out of footsoldiers and lying low'

Ross McGill, who has been waging war on associates of Edinburgh kingpin Mark Richardson and the notorious Glasgow-based Daniel clan, is believed to be 'lying low'. A gang war which has resulted in a number of shootings and firebombings across the central belt has shuddered to a halt after the crime lord behind the attacks began to 'run out of footsoldiers', according to underworld sources. Ross McGill, who has been waging war on associates of Edinburgh kingpin Mark Richardson and the notorious Glasgow-based Daniel clan, is believed to be 'lying low'. A number of businesses, properties and cars linked to Richardson and the Daniel family have been torched during an barrage of terrifying attacks spreading across the east and west of the country since March. Those associated with Richardson have repeatedly been targeted, with vehicles torched and several homes allegedly shot at by masked gunmen. A group called Tamo Junto (TMJ) have continued to taunt their rivals by releasing videos of the attacks and threatening further violence as Dubai-based McGill seeks revenge for an underworld heist. It is claimed an associate of Richardson paid for a stash of drugs with fake notes after building a relationship with the crime lord. McGill, in retaliation, supposedly used his criminal contacts to wage war on those involved in the deal. Due to police cracking down on those involved in the gangland feud, however, it has been suggested McGill is now "lying low" after officers investigating the series of violent incidents made a total of 55 arrests. A source told Edinburgh Live McGill has been left with fewer footsoldiers to do his bidding as several weeks have passed since the last gang-related incident in the capital. They told our sister title: "Word is McGill is lying low and has taken a backseat. The Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan shootings in Spain was mental as well so things have calmed down a little after that. "From the beginning there have been more and more characters getting involved and competing to see who was the bravest basically. It has all just become so messy." It was reported earlier this month McGill was confronted by another gangster at a gym in Dubai over the heat he has brought. Stephen 'Jimmy' Jamieson is understood to have confronted McGill during the bust-up. The most recent arrest linked to the gang war, named Operation Portaledge by police, came on Friday, July 18, when a man was arrested and charged in connection with wilful fireraising and firearms offences. Jordan Steele, 38, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, July 21, in connection with the alleged firebombing of the Belle Cheveux salon in Leith on March 6. Steele made no plea and was granted bail. A 26-year-old male was also arrested in connection with alleged damage at a property on Walter Scott Avenue in Edinburgh on Thursday, 12 June, and an alleged wilful fire-raising at a property on Jackson Way in Tranent on Friday, 13 June. In addition, another 26-year-old man was also charged in connection with two alleged vehicle fires in Port Seton on Sunday, May 18 - he will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

$17 million taken in TikTok ATM scam

A viral TikTok scam earlier this month saw more than $17 million withdrawn from ATMs in New York in just three days. 0 According to the New York Times, a rash of huge withdrawals was made possible by a fault with cards used to pay young people as part of a youth jobs programme. The programme issued as many as 30,000 cards to 14-to 24-year-olds because they could not be paid via direct debit. The cards were only supposed to enable users to access their weekly earnings. However, from 11 to 13 July, cardholders were able to withdraw huge sums; as much as $40,000 per ATM in $200 at a time, according to the Times. The glitch went viral on TikTok and Instagram and some users sold their cards for $1000 each. As the news spread, $17 million was withdrawn across the city before the cards were deactivated.
