Brisbane 2032 main stadium gets major funding boost from federal, state governments
The federal government is set to invest more than 3.4 billion Australian dollars ($2.23 billion) in the Games — the single largest contribution towards sporting infrastructure in Australia's history, federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said.
'It is about ensuring that when we hand the keys back after the closing ceremony, Queensland has the infrastructure it needs to build on this incredible legacy for decades to come,' King said.
The centerpiece of Brisbane 2032 is a proposed 63,000-seat stadium at the inner-city Victoria Park. Investigative works at the site have begun with geotechnical studies and soil sampling ongoing.
Brisbane 2032 chief executive Andrew Liveris welcomed the agreement and said he hopes construction will begin at major venues by the end of 2026.
'Today marks a significant shift in forward momentum following the Queensland government's announcement in March of its 2032 Delivery Plan,' Liveris said.
The International Olympic Committee has backed the Queensland government's 2032 venue plan after several false starts, saying the Brisbane Games are 'on the right path."

World champion Spain routs Portugal 5-0 in their Euro 2025 opener
BERN (AP) — Esther González scored twice and world champion Spain delivered a statement of intent by routing Portugal 5-0 in their Women's European Championship opener on Thursday. The 32-year-old González became the oldest player to score for Spain, minutes before 18-year-old Vicky López became the youngest. Spain captain Alexia Putellas also scored for La Roja, showing she's ready to lead the team to success after missing Euro 2022 with a knee injury. Only 24 minutes were played when the fans started a Mexican wave around the nearly 30,000-capacity Wankdorf Stadium, normally home to Swiss Super League team Young Boys. The club also has a women's team, which is also called Young Boys. Spain dominated possession in a textbook first-half display. Teammates' work off the ball ensured there was always a passing option. No player had the ball for long as it zipped around and the Portuguese players were left to chase it. Putellas went close, Pereira denied Clàudia Pina, and it was no surprise when Putellas finally got the third goal after she displayed some brilliant control to evade a defender in the 41st. The fourth came two minutes later when González tucked in the rebound after Pina's cross came back off the post. But Spain coach Montse Tomé may have concerns about her team's second-half performance as her players' level of control dropped. Martin-Prieto's late goal was the only addition. Spain didn't need Aitana Bonmatí. The two-time Ballon d'Or winner stayed on the substitutes bench until going on for López in the 81st. Bonmatí had been a doubt for the tournament after being hospitalized for viral meningitis last week. 'She's a very important player for us and we're happy she's back with us after recovering from her illness,' Putellas said of Bonmatí. 'Now we hope she can get back quickly to top playing form.'

Wimbledon: Ben Shelton is 1 game away from winning when his match is suspended because of darkness
LONDON (AP) — Two-time Grand Slam semifinalist Ben Shelton's second-round match at Wimbledon was suspended because of fading light with him a game away from beating Rinky Hijikata on Thursday night. The 10th-seeded Shelton was about to serve for the match while leading 6-2, 7-5, 5-4 when action was halted at No. 2 Court, which does not have a roof or artificial lights. Shelton, a 22-year-old American, had just held three match points in the previous game, up 5-3 and love-40 as Hijikata served. But the 87th-ranked Australian grabbed the next five points in a row to extend the contest. Play was stopped at 9:30 p.m. They will resume on Friday. The left-handed, big-serving Shelton reached the fourth round at the All England Club a year ago. He made it to the semifinals at the 2023 U.S. Open and the 2025 Australian Open. ___

Wimbledon: Sonmez becomes first Turkish player in Open Era to reach third round of a Slam
LONDON (AP) — Zeynep Sonmez became the first Turkish player in the professional era to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament by beating Xinyu Wang 7-5, 7-5 at Wimbledon on Thursday. She hopes her win ensures it won't be that long before another Turkish player reaches that stage. 'My mom and the people in my team told me that there were videos where kids were watching me back at home, in tennis clubs on TV,' Sonmez said. 'And I hope they get inspired or they feel like, 'Oh, we can do that too.'' No Turkish man or woman had made the third round of a major since the Open Era began in 1968, although Cagla Buyukakcay made the second round at three Grand Slams between 2016-17. One has to go back 75 years to find the last Turkish woman to make it that far, when Bahtiye Musluoglu reached the third round of the French Open in 1950. The 23-year-old Sonmez was supported by a number of Turkish fans in the crowd and took selfies with some of them after the match. 'I feel that there are a lot of Turkish people (here) and it makes me very happy,' she said. Sonmez has a WTA title under her belt, at last year's Merida Open, but had lost in the first round in three previous major tournaments. This is her first Wimbledon appearance. ___
