What is the rebel league NBA stars LeBron James, Nikola Jokić are planning
Denver Nuggets Nikola Jokic and Los Angeles Lakers' LeBron James have been linked to a proposed basketball league that aims to establish itself as a rival to the NBA. Reuters
Is Los Angeles Lakers icon LeBron James planning to launch a league of his own, one that will rival the National Basketball Association (NBA)? Latest reports certainly indicate that might be a possibility, with Denver Nuggets' Serbian star Nikola Jokic possibly partnering the power forward in his venture.
What LeBron and Jokic's proposed rebel league is all about
With LeBron in the twilight of his career and retirement on the horizon, there have been discussions surrounding the possibility of the 40-year-old owning an NBA team after hanging up his boots.
At the same time, there are some who suggest LeBron's eyeing more than just an NBA team, and is perhaps looking beyond the world's biggest basketball league that has been in existence for nearly eight decades and is among the 'Big Four' of American sport.

A report on Bloomberg in January had revealed that LeBron's long-time business partner Maverick Carter was advising a group of investors on setting up an international basketball league which aimed to brand itself as the 'F1 of basketball'. The proposed league would have an international focus with six men's and as many women's teams playing across a host of international locations.
Such a move could lead to the NBA facing serious competition for the first time since its merger with the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1976. Especially since the proposed league is backed by a private capital of $5 billion.
As for Jokic's entry into the picture, the Serbian center's agent Misko Raznatovic had recently posted pictures of his meeting with LeBron and Carter on a private yacht on his Instagram account.
While there has been a lot of speculation over LeBron's meeting with an individual who is considered to be the biggest agent in Europe, the most popular theory at the moment is that of Jokic's interest in the proposed international league, rather than the two players becoming teammates either at Lakers or at Nuggets.

'The summer of 2025 is the perfect time to make big plans for the fall of 2026!' Raznatovic wrote in his post on Instagram.

NBA: Luka Doncic Secures $165M Extension With LA Lakers, Commits Through 2028
Last Updated: Luka Doncic agreed to a three-year, $165M extension with the Lakers, securing his future through 2027–28. Doncic, from the Mavericks, is now key alongside LeBron James. Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, locking in his future with the franchise and forgoing the opportunity to enter free agency next summer. The extension secures the Slovenian star's services through the 2027–28 season, eliminating a player option he held for 2026–27 under his previous deal. A source with direct knowledge of the negotiations confirmed the contract terms to the Associated Press on Saturday, speaking anonymously because the Lakers have not publicly disclosed contract details. 'Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud," Doncic shared on social media. 'Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates, and all the fans who've shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning." From Blockbuster Trade to Long-Term Pillar Doncic arrived in Los Angeles via one of the NBA's biggest mid-season trades in recent memory, when the Lakers shocked the league in February by acquiring him from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Anthony Davis. Since his move, Doncic has quickly become a central figure in the Lakers' lineup, forming a potent one-two punch with LeBron James. In 31 games with Los Angeles last season, he averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.7 rebounds, helping the Lakers secure 50 wins and finish third in the Western Conference. Although the team was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by Minnesota, Doncic's performance and leadership during that stretch helped cement his role as the Lakers' future franchise cornerstone. Doncic's commitment signals his growing confidence in the Lakers' direction. This offseason, he played a key role in the franchise's successful recruitment of Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, persuading both veterans to join the team in its bid for championship contention. His influence off the court reflects his expanding leadership within the organization, and the front office has made clear they're building around his talents in the post-LeBron era. The move to Los Angeles also appears to have rejuvenated Doncic personally and professionally. Reports from his time in Dallas had raised concerns about his conditioning and long-term commitment — issues that, according to multiple insiders, contributed to his unexpected departure. Since landing in LA, Doncic has been dedicated to a rigorous offseason training regimen, silencing critics and demonstrating a new level of professionalism. His teammates and coaches have praised his approach, noting his focus and determination to elevate the team to championship status. Doncic's extension coincides with LeBron James preparing to begin his record-setting 23rd NBA season, with both stars set to lead what now appears to be one of the league's most formidable rosters. Kelsey Plum fuels debate after revealing true reason behind WNBA salary demands
Kelsey Plum fuels debate after revealing true reason behind WNBA salary demands (Image Source: Getty Images) Many people believe WNBA players want the same salaries as NBA stars, but that's not true. The real issue is how league money is shared. Las Vegas Aces guard Kelsey Plum recently explained that women players are simply asking for a fair percentage of revenue- just like the men receive in their league. As talks over a new WNBA agreement heat up, players are making their voices heard with clear demands and honest facts. WNBA players want a fair share, not equal pay with NBA players, says Kelsey Plum During an appearance on the All The Smoke podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson in July 2025, Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum spoke openly about what WNBA players are really asking for in the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Plum, who is the WNBPA's first vice president, said many people have misunderstood their demands. She clarified that players are not asking to be paid the same amount as NBA players. Instead, they want a similar percentage of league revenue that male athletes receive in their league. Plum said this misunderstanding has made people criticize the women unfairly. 'We're asking just the same percentage of revenue or a similar percentage of revenue,' she said on the podcast, which aired in late July. 'And right now, that's not the case. That's what we're fighting for.' Kelsey Plum explains what's missing in WNBA deals and how revenue sharing compares Right now, WNBA players receive just 9.3% of the league's revenue, which is the lowest revenue share among major U.S. professional leagues. In comparison, NBA players are guaranteed around 50%, and the NFL and NHL players also receive close to half of league revenue. Kelsey Plum made these statements on the record during her podcast interview on All The Smoke, which took place ahead of the 2025 WNBA All-Star break. Many WNBA players, including Plum, wore 'Pay us what you owe us' shirts during warm-ups for the All-Star Game, held in Phoenix, Arizona, on July 20. This was a clear message to league executives during ongoing negotiations. Despite the gap, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in an interview with ESPN that she believes both sides will reach a fair deal. 'There's a lot of work being done, and we're committed to growth,' Engelbert said in late July. The WNBA has seen major growth since the last CBA was signed in 2020. According to Basketball Network, viewership has gone up by 170%, attendance increased by 48%, and merchandise sales rose by 601% in the 2024 season. The league also signed a new $2.2 billion media rights deal with Disney, Amazon Prime, and NBCUniversal that will start in 2025. Also Read: Nikola Vucevic buyout watch puts Los Angeles Lakers on high alert for unexpected roster boost Sports economist Andrew Zimbalist told USA Today in July that 'There's no reason why WNBA players shouldn't be able to get to that level. 50% in the WNBA is not the same as 50% in the NBA, but it still makes sense.' The next round of CBA talks is expected to happen before the 2025 WNBA playoffs begin in late August.
