Andrea Atzeni bullish about Patch Of Theta: ‘I wouldn't swap the horse for anything else in the race'

Bidding to add to what has already been a fruitful campaign, Andrea Atzeni has declared he wouldn't swap Patch Of Theta for any other ride in Sunday's Group Three Premier Cup (1,400m) at Sha Tin.
The Sardinian jockey has legitimate claims in the final two features of the season, with Patch Of Theta and his Group Three Premier Plate (1,800m) mount Bundle Award shaping as strong contenders.
Atzeni, who sits third in the jockeys' championship with 54 wins, hops aboard Patch Of Theta for the first time as Francis Lui Kin-wai's classy five-year-old chases a second Group Three triumph this term.
Victorious in the Chinese Club Challenge Cup (1,400m) in January, the Zoustar gelding put the writing on the wall with a fast-finishing third to Helios Express in the Group Three Sha Tin Vase (1,200m) last start.
Smart win, Patch Of Theta! 🫡

'He's a very good ride to get,' Atzeni said. 'His last run was very good. If he can repeat that, he shouldn't be too far away. To be honest, I'd say I wouldn't swap the horse for anything else in the race.
'I think 1,400m is his perfect trip because he's not short of speed and he can travel strong. Sometimes 1,200m looks a little bit sharp and a mile, although he's won over it, can be a little bit far for him.'
Patch Of Theta emerged as one of Lui's more progressive gallopers during his championship-winning campaign last season with four wins – all over 1,400m at Sha Tin.
Since winning a Class Two mile and the Chinese Club Challenge Cup, he has been tested at a much higher level and, despite finishing well back in his two Group One starts, he was not disgraced.
Atzeni highlighted another progressive Lui galloper in Packing Hermod, who shoots for a third consecutive win, and Group One victors Beauty Eternal and Invincible Sage as Patch Of Theta's major rivals on Sunday.
Bundle Award drops back in trip in the Premier Plate after a solid fifth to Voyage Bubble in the Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) when making late ground from the tail of the field.
The John Size-trained gelding has won three races this season, crowned by last month's Group Three Queen Mother Memorial Cup (2,400m).
'He's another good ride. He ran very well the other day in the mile-and-a-half race,' Atzeni said.
'If you take away the winner Voyage Bubble, it was a very close finish – there wasn't far between second, third, fourth and fifth. I didn't get stuck behind horses but if I got a slightly better run in the straight, I think I would have finished a lot closer.
'Back down into a Group Three handicap with a bottom weight [of 115lb], I know he's dropping back to 1,800m but he won over it before he went on to run in the Derby.
'It's a competitive race, but with the weight difference I think he's definitely well in.'
Bundle Award jumps from gate 13 in an even race featuring the likes of dual Group Two winner Straight Arron, Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) hero Cap Ferrat and last-start Group Three Lion Rock Trophy (1,600m) winner Pray For Mir.
Blazing Wukong, an impressive debut winner for Ricky Yiu Poon-fai, and Frankie Lor Fu-chuen's talented three-year-old South Star are among the best of Atzeni's other rides this weekend.
'Blazing Wukong is a really nice horse. He trialled the other day and looked like he's sharpened up from his first run,' Atzeni said.
'It looks like a nice race, but I do like my horse and I think whatever he does this season, he's going to be a much better horse for next year.
'South Star is another horse I like a lot. It's a very good race with some young horses who could be pretty smart next season taking each other on.'

Matthew Poon sets sights on Tony Cruz Award as in-form Matthew Chadwick closes the gap
The 31-year-old rider heads to Sha Tin on Tuesday with a lead of two wins in the race for the leading local jockey this season The Tony Cruz Award is heading down to the wire and Matthew Poon Ming-fai is hoping Tourbillon Prince can help him extend his lead in the Class Two Hong Kong Reunification Cup (1,400m) at Sha Tin on Tuesday. The 31-year-old has seen his lead in the local riders' premiership reduced to just two winners by a surging Matthew Chadwick, who has ridden three winners without reply from Poon. The tide could quickly shift the other direction, however, with Poon looking to Tourbillon Prince to give him a decisive boost in the race for the title. The Rommel galloper was an impressive winner of a 1,600m Class Three at Sha Tin on his most recent start for trainer Benno Yung Tin-pang, where he travelled up powerfully under Luke Ferraris before unleashing a smart turn of foot to scamper clear. Running away with it! Tourbillon Prince wins easily in the finale at Sha Tin as @LukeFerraris makes it a double... 🙌#LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) May 31, 2025 He is now back in Class Two company, a level he is zero from five at, but Poon is hoping an ideal draw can see him put that fact right on Tuesday. 'I'm looking forward to it, it's a strong field but I hope he can keep rolling,' said Poon. 'The light weight [119lb] should be good for him. The draw in stall nine is actually probably better for him, too. 'I will leave the tactics to Benno, he'll tell me what to do and I'll try to execute it the best I can.' Poon has eight rides to try and extend his lead over Chadwick and Lapras shapes as a solid chance in the opening Class Five Racing Goes On Handicap (1,800m). The five-year-old is winless in 15 starts, but he arrives in great nick after a pair of good runs, including a 1,600m second at Sha Tin two starts ago. Jolly Jumper holds them all off! 💪 Benno Yung's charge becomes apprentice Britney Wong's second winner from her past three rides... #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) May 10, 2025 He has drawn the inside in gate one and after going close three times this season when ridden by Chadwick, it could be a slice of irony should the Smart Missile galloper get his win with Poon on board for the first time. 'He's been really consistent in Class Five races and a good draw also helps. I just really hope he can win,' said Poon. Of his remaining rides, Poon put forward Quick Contribution as his other biggest chance in the Class Four Riding High Together Handicap (1,600m). He has been steadily improving for trainer David Hall and was beaten just a length and a half when third in a Class Four over the 1,400m distance three starts back. The son of Contributer is having just his seventh career start and the step up in distance could be just what he needs. 'I think Quick Contribution is improving and learning. I hope he can jump better and I think he will run really well,' said Poon. Posting a career-best tally of 37 winners in the 2020-21 season, Poon is just one win away from equalling the tally. The goal runs parallel with his pursuit of the Tony Cruz Award and Poon is focusing solely on what he can do to wrap up the title – not what his nearest rival is doing. 'I can't control how many winners Matthew [Chadwick] can get, I can only control how many I can win so I'm just focusing on doing my best and hopefully riding a few more winners,' said Poon. 'The Tony Cruz is really good for my CV. It's really good for my career and this season is a really good chance to win it.'

Harry Bentley looking forward to plum ride on ‘very competitive' Lo Rider at Sha Tin
The 33-year-old is hoping a drop in distance will be a masterstroke by Caspar Fownes Harry Bentley is relishing the chance to get on board the unexposed Lo Rider in the Class Two Hong Kong Reunification Cup (1,400m) at Sha Tin on Tuesday as he looks to end the season on a high. The Harzand galloper was last seen running a massive race to finish fourth in the Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) back in March, defying odds of $19. Ridden that day by Hugh Bowman, he set out to make all the running and only begrudgingly gave up the lead at the 200m pole, ultimately finishing less than two lengths behind Cap Ferrat. While he is yet to break through from six starts in Hong Kong, Lo Rider was a two-time winner in Ireland when known as Sharinay and went close to a win when a neck second to Steps Ahead at Sha Tin in February. HISTORY AT SHA TIN! 👏👏@CWilliamsJockey wins the 148th @BMW Hong Kong Derby aboard Cap Ferrat for trainer Francis Lui over a fast-closing My Wish... #4YOSeries | #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) March 23, 2025 The four-year-old has been absent since his Derby run, but he trialled well on the Sha Tin all-weather surface two weeks ago and Bentley thinks a drop in trip by trainer Caspar Fownes could be the key to a first local success. 'He's a good ride to have picked up, there's no question about that,' said Bentley. 'I think he's in this class as well. Obviously he's dropping in trip, which is something to consider. 'But he's definitely a great ride to have picked up from Caspar and looks to be a very competitive runner. 'Having not had any experience on the horse up until this point, I can't hand on heart say whether he'll love the drop in distance. Clearly Caspar thinks it's the right option and I totally trust his judgment. 'He's a really solid horse bringing good form into the race and he has a light weight too – he has to be considered.' Bentley has six rides on Tuesday's programme, including a pair of debutants, but he is particularly hopeful in the chances of Happy Universe in the Class Four Riding High Together Handicap (1,600m). The Jimmy Ting Koon-ho-trained five-year-old was a dual winner in New Zealand but is yet to add to his tally in Hong Kong, though it is not through a lack of trying. The Zacinto galloper has finished second on two occasions, most recently over Tuesday's course and distance back in April where he was only beaten a length. 'He's been a horse that's been a bit unlucky. Last time he didn't get drawn overly well but he's a consistent runner,' said Bentley. Bright Inheritance gets his second win! Dennis Yip's Star Witness galloper is the recipient of a superb @LukeFerraris drive... 🙌#LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) April 20, 2025 'I think the draw [gate two] is a massive plus this time and he can get into a nice position and run another solid race.' British-born Bentley is in his fourth full season in Hong Kong and sits on the 30-winner mark for the campaign. Matching his career-best haul of 39 winners is a bridge too far this campaign, but the 33-year-old is satisfied with another solid season that he hopes he can end on a successful note. 'Obviously you're always striving for more but I'm happy enough to get 30 winners up,' said Bentley. 'I'll just keep getting my head down and hopefully add to that tally before the season is up.'
