Govt to probe ‘suspicious' land deals under BRS rule

Time of India15-05-2025
Hyderabad: Suspecting that thousands of acres belonging to the state, waqf, and endowment department were illegally transferred to private individuals during BRS govt in Hyderabad and surrounding districts of Rangareddy, Medchal, Sangareddy, Yadadri-Bhongiri and Siddipet, the Telangana govt has decided to conduct a forensic audit of the land records soon.

A Kerala-based company has now been given the task of conducting the forensic audit and the govt will formally sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in a couple of days. The govt may set a time frame of about three months to complete the audit.
"The state govt has decided to conduct a forensic audit of land, especially for suspicious transactions done during BRS govt. An agency was picked after considering two to three firms with experience in land record management.
The govt will release full details on the audit in a couple of days," revenue minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy told TOI on Thursday.
The govt will provide data on govt and prohibited land in the specified districts before 2014 and later to the agency, which will also look into transactions through the Dharani portal from its inception in Oct 2020 until Dec 2023. The firm will investigate if there was any tampering of land records, place, and time of the suspected illegal land transactions.
The forensic audit can be done via digital footprint and blockchain technology, but it was not clear which one will be used by the firm. A digital footprint, also known as a digital fingerprint or digital dossier, is the data a person generates when using the internet for any type of activity linked to that person's individual identity. This encompasses the entire online activity, both via and outside of the person's accounts, IP addresses, and transaction history on devices connected to the internet.

Chief minister A Revanth Reddy and revenue minister Srinivas Reddy have alleged that govt land was illegally mutated and transferred by tampering with records during BRS govt since 2014, especially after the Dharani land portal was launched in Oct 2020. The CM had alleged that some transactions were done through the Dharani portal even during midnights and from outside the country too.
As per the state govt estimates, about 2,000 acres of govt land in HMDA and surrounding areas changed ownership to private parties as patta land. Along with this, some people, especially politicians, applied for regularisation scheme under encroached govt land (GO 59) and had it transferred in their name.

KTR comes to aid of TG woman trapped in Oman

Hyderabad: Once again demonstrating his humanitarian commitment, BRS working president KT Rama Rao came to the aid of a 28-year-old woman from Telangana who was trapped and abused in Oman after being misled by a recruitment agent. Afrin, a native of Godavarikhani, had travelled to Oman for employment after being assured a domestic worker's job. However, upon arrival, she was locked in a room, denied food, and subjected to severe physical and emotional abuse by her employer. Attempts to switch jobs only led to more harassment. Despite seeking help from multiple sources and reaching out to the Indian Embassy, Afrin's pleas went unanswered. Eventually, her ordeal reached KT Rama Rao through a BRS party worker. Responding without delay, Rama Rao directed party leader Harish Reddy from Ramagundam to take up the matter and coordinate her rescue. With support from KTR's office, contact was established with the Indian Embassy in Oman. To facilitate her release, Rs 1,20,000 was paid to the local agent. Following this, arrangements were swiftly made to bring Afrin back to Hyderabad. Upon her arrival on Sunday, Afrin visited Telangana Bhavan to thank KTR in person. Overwhelmed with emotion, she said, 'It is only because of KTR's support and assurance that I was able to return home safely. In a foreign land where I had no one, he stood by me like a protective elder brother.' As a gesture of gratitude, she tied a rakhi on his wrist. KTR expressed happiness over her safe return and inquired about her family's well-being. 'While no government came to her aid, it was our party and our leadership that stood by her,' he said, promising continued support to Afrin and her also praised the efforts of Harish Reddy, who coordinated the rescue mission from Muscat to Hyderabad.

Delta Air assures U.S. lawmakers it will not personalise fares using AI

Delta Air Lines said on Friday it has not used artificial intelligence to set personalised ticket prices for passengers after facing sharp criticism from U.S. lawmakers. Last week, Democratic Senators Ruben Gallego, Mark Warner and Richard Blumenthal said they believed the Atlanta-based airline would use AI to set individual prices, which would "likely mean fare price increases up to each individual consumer's personal 'pain point.'" Delta said it will not use AI to set personalised prices but previously said it plans to deploy AI-based revenue management technology across 20% of its domestic network by the end of 2025 in partnership with Fetcherr, an AI pricing company. "There is no fare product Delta has ever used, is testing or plans to use that targets customers with individualized prices based on personal data," Delta told the senators in a letter on Friday, seen by Reuters. "Our ticket pricing never takes into account personal data." The senators cited a comment in December by Delta President Glen Hauenstein that the carrier's AI price-setting technology is capable of setting fares based on a prediction of "the amount people are willing to pay for the premium products related to the base fares." Last week, American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said using AI to set ticket prices could hurt consumer trust. "This is not about bait and switch. This is not about tricking," Isom said on an earnings call, adding "talk about using AI in that way, I don't think it's appropriate. And certainly from American, it's not something we will do." Democratic lawmakers Greg Casar and Rashida Tlaib last week introduced legislation to bar companies from using AI to set prices or wages based on Americans' personal data and would specifically ban airlines raising individual prices after seeing a search for a family obituary. They cited a Federal Trade Commission staff report in January found "retailers frequently use people's personal information to set targeted, tailored prices for goods and services, from a person's location and demographics, down to their mouse movements on a webpage." The FTC cited a hypothetical example of a consumer profiled as a new parent who could intentionally be shown higher-priced baby thermometers and collect behavioural details to forecast a customer's state of mind. Delta said airlines have used dynamic pricing for more than three decades, in which pricing fluctuates based on a variety of factors like overall customer demand, fuel prices and competition, but not a specific consumer's personal information. "Given the tens of millions of fares and hundreds of thousands of routes for sale at any given time, the use of new technology like AI promises to streamline the process by which we analyze existing data and the speed and scale at which we can respond to changing market dynamics," Delta's letter said.
