No free run after bail: Telangana police to detain foreign nationals accused in drug cases

Hyderabad: Foreign nationals arrested for drug peddling in Telangana may no longer walk free even after securing bail. In a significant policy shift, the state police are planning to detain foreign drug offenders in a dedicated detention centre, curbing their movement until the conclusion of trial proceedings. The decision was taken during a recent high-level meeting of senior police officials, in response to a growing pattern— foreign nationals, particularly from some African countries, who after being released on bail, are reportedly resuming drug trafficking operations in different parts of India. 'Once a foreign national gets bail, we are planning to place them in a detention centre to ensure they remain under supervision and do not repeat the offence,' a senior official from the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE), the state's anti-narcotics wing, told TOI. 'This will help us maintain custody and prevent repeat offences,' he said. Officials said work is underway to ensure basic amenities and secure infrastructure are in place before the policy is rolled out. The move comes as Telangana grapples with a rise in synthetic drug trafficking, especially cocaine, largely smuggled into India by accused from select African nations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Baffled: "It's Like My Knee Pain Never Existed - I Feel Brand New!" Health Journal Learn More Undo Police say tracking these individuals becomes difficult once they are granted bail, as there are no legal provisions to keep them under continuous surveillance. So far this year, 16 foreign nationals have been arrested, and 12 deported. Authorities follow a graded approach: first-time offenders may be deported directly, particularly if they lack valid travel documents. However, repeat offenders or those awaiting trial may now be detained within India, under tighter control. Back in 2023, during the former BRS govt's tenure, there were plans to establish a deportation centre exclusively for undocumented foreigners. The current proposal, however, is distinct—it focuses on detaining those out on bail, pending trial. 'This is a policy-level decision, but implementation details are still being worked out,' a senior police official said. 'Our priority is to ensure that foreign nationals involved in drug networks do not misuse bail to continue illicit activities,' he added. Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday renamed the Telangana Anti Narcotics Bureau (TGNAB) as EAGLE to curb the menace of drugs and consumption of narcotic substances.

The Telangana government is set to re-evaluate the fee structure for engineering colleges in the state, with a strong focus on improving educational quality and aligning with evolving industry demands. According to an official release, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy aims to raise the standards of technical education, urging institutions to match global benchmarks, especially in high-demand fields like Artificial Intelligence (AI).advertisementTo achieve this, the Congress-led state government plans to introduce a new system that encourages engineering colleges to upgrade infrastructure, enhance faculty quality, and improve laboratory facilities in line with guidelines from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).The review will consider various parameters such as faculty salaries, lab and classroom infrastructure, and other academic inputs while deciding the revised fees. The move also aligns with the Supreme Court's guidance that factors like teaching quality, staff remuneration, and institutional efforts to raise academic standards must be considered in fee determination. Telangana CM Revanth Reddy to remind Amit Shah of fund requests

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said he, along with ministers D Sridhar Babu and Ponnam Prabhakar, would meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah at Begumpet airport on Sunday to remind him of the state government's request for Central funds for the Musi rejuvenation project, Regional Ring Road (RRR) construction, and Metro expansion. Speaking after inaugurating the PJR flyover at Kondapur, the chief minister said: 'I am asking Union Minister and state BJP president G Kishan Reddy, what has Prime Minister Narendra Modi given to Telangana or Hyderabad? The people of Telangana have given eight MPs to the BJP. Show me a single project that Modi has given.' He pointed out that the Centre sanctioned Metro projects to Bengaluru and Chennai, the bullet train and Sabarmati Riverfront Development projects to Gujarat, and river rejuvenation and cleaning projects to Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Revanth questioned why funds had not been sanctioned for the Musi Riverfront Development Project, RRR construction or Metro expansion. 'Why this discrimination?' he asked. The chief minister said he had visited Delhi 30 to 35 times to meet the prime minister, home minister and other ministers to represent these issues. 'We will go to Begumpet airport to meet Amit Shah and ask for funds and projects for the state,' he said.

Will reclaim Gachibowli land, asserts Telangana CM Revanth Reddy; says area will be used for IT development & job creation

HYDERABAD: Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday took a defiant stand on the Kancha Gachibowli land controversy and and said his govt would reclaim the entire land, spanning over 400 acres. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Certain individuals are creating obstacles, but the govt will pursue the issue legally and reclaim the land," he said without specifically mentioning 'Kancha Gachibowli'. Inaugurating the six-lane PJR flyover in Kondapur, spanning 1.2 km, he said, "We will establish IT companies on the land and generate lakhs of jobs. The Financial District has already created nearly 10 lakh jobs, while the Knowledge Park near Durgam Cheruvu has generated an additional five lakh jobs. We planned to create five lakh more jobs with Rs 1 lakh crore investment across 400 acres near Gachibowli stadium, but faced hurdles from certain quarters. " He added the land had been wrongly allocated to private parties in 2002-03. What has Modi done for Hyderabad, asks Revanth Revanth said, "But we successfully contested the claim in the Supreme Court and reclaimed it for the state govt after two decades." Controversy around Kancha Gachibowli started in Feb after the state govt announced plans to clear the land for development projects. The move met with stiff opposition from environmentalists and University of Hyderabad (UoH) student groups who alleged that damaging the forest flora and fauna would fuel the climate crisis. The issue had reached up to the Supreme Court which warned the state govt against clearing the forest. Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the flyover, Revanth challenged Union minister G Kishan Reddy and BJP's eight MPs in Telangana to explain Prime Minister Narendra Modi's contribution to the city. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Bengaluru, Chennai, and Andhra Pradesh were sanctioned metro rail projects," he said. "Gujarat was given a bullet train worth Rs 2 lakh crore. Telangana faces unequal treatment in riverfront development funding. While Sabarmati in Gujarat, Yamuna to Delhi, and Ganga to Uttar Pradesh got funds, our Musi riverfront remains unfunded." Hyd vying with NY, Tokyo "I made a personal visit to Kishan Reddy's home and invited him to join us. We will call on Amit Shah during his upcoming visit to the city to seek approvals for our Metro project, regional ring road, and Musi River development initiatives," said Revanth Reddy. He said Hyderabad aspired to compete with New York and Singapore, not just Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, and Mumbai. "Despite political hindrances in urban development, the administration continues to implement the Telangana Rising 2047 plan," he insisted. "While Delhi struggles with air pollution, Chennai faces flooding issues, and Bengaluru grapples with traffic congestion. These conditions offer valuable insights for Hyderabad's development. We are preparing plans in the next 100 days to address growing pollution concerns and plan to implement initiatives like replacing diesel buses with 3,000 electric buses, permitting electric and CNG autos, and offering complete tax exemption for EVs," Revanth said. Future City project In a review meeting with industries minister D Sridhar Babu, the CM directed officials to expedite land acquisition for the proposed Future City project. "No investor or industrialist seeking land for data centres should leave empty-handed," the CM said. "The department should prepare a 100-day action plan to create a favourable ecosystem for GCCs," he said.

Telangana sets sights on Rs 9k crore youth self-employment scheme: Rajiv Yuva Vikasam rollout likely soon; govt faces fund crunch, banks wary over defaulters

HYDERABAD: After disbursing ₹9,000 crore to farmers under the Rythu Bharosa scheme in nine days, the Congress govt is now preparing to launch its next major welfare initiative-Rajiv Yuva Vikasam-to support youth self-employment ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections. Chief minister A Revanth Reddy has directed deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka to begin groundwork for the scheme, which is estimated to cost Rs 9,000 crore. Raising this amount poses a challenge, especially as the state govt recently cleared Rs 180 crore in pending bills of govt employees and is preparing to pay one pending DA instalment along with June salaries by July 1-an additional burden of Rs 200 crore. You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad The scheme saw an overwhelming response when applications were invited, with over 16 lakh youth applying. Originally scheduled for launch on June 2, the rollout was postponed to allow for a larger budget-increased from Rs 6,000 crore to Rs 9,000 crore-and better preparation. One of the key hurdles is finalising eligibility guidelines. The govt has already held preliminary talks with banks for loan linkage, but officials say the process is complicated by a significant number of applicants who are loan defaulters. Bankers are reportedly hesitant to approve fresh loans in such cases. However, finance department officials remain confident that a resolution will be reached in the final round of discussions with bankers. Official sources said the aim is to provide flexible support based on individual needs, ensuring youth from all socio-economic backgrounds, especially SC, ST, BC, minority, and EBC/EWS communities, can benefit. The govt is also debating whether to restrict eligibility to one member per family. To mobilise funds for the scheme, the state is reportedly exploring options such as land sales. Meanwhile, mandal-level committees, led by mandal parishad development officers, have been formed to scrutinise applications and select beneficiaries. These committees also include representatives from various welfare departments and local bankers.
