England Resort To Pitch Politics At Lord's After Shubman Gill-Led India's Historic Win In Edgbaston

England Resort To Pitch Politics At Lord's After Shubman Gill-Led India's Historic Win In Edgbaston

NDTV13 hours ago
Stung by their 336-run thrashing at Edgbaston, England have requested a pitch with "plenty of life in it" as they look to unleash returning pacers Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson in the third Test against India at Lord's, starting July 10. Archer is set for a long-awaited Test comeback after persistent elbow and back injuries that kept him out since February 2021, while Atkinson, who missed the second Test due to a hamstring issue, is also expected to bolster the pace attack.
England coach Brendon McCullum said he wants "something with a bit more pace, a bit more bounce, and maybe a little bit of sideways" from MCC head groundsman Karl McDermott, taking cue from last month's World Test Championship final where Pat Cummins and Kagiso Rabada found significant seam movement.
"It'll be a blockbuster either way, but I think it's going to set up for a cracker – especially if there's plenty of life in it (the pitch)," McCullum was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo.
England had earlier preferred flatter pitches to suit their aggressive style of play. While more bounce and carry at Leeds aided their five-wicket win in the first Test, the Edgbaston surface offered sub-continental conditions, allowing Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj to extract far more movement than England pacers as the visitors levelled the series 1-1.
Archer 'ready to go'
Archer trained with England ahead of the second Test, bowling consistently on practice strips to build up his workload after his county stint with Sussex last month.
"He'll certainly be available for selection," McCullum said.
"Our seamers have gone two Tests on the spin and we've got a short turnaround before we head down to HQ.
"We'll let the dust settle on this one, but Jofra is looking fit, he's looking strong, he's looking ready to go, and he'll come into calculations. It's hugely exciting.
"We all know what he's capable of achieving in Test cricket, and we hope that when the opportunity does arrive for him, he's able to recapture and also improve on what he's been able to do already in that form of the game." Atkinson has also been added to the squad for Lord's.
"We need to have a good look at Gus," McCullum said.
"We'll just see how the dust settles on this (Test). The guys had quite a heavy workload. When you chase a bit of leather, you obviously go pretty deep into your spells as well. So we'll see how they are, and then we'll make the decision when we get down the road."

Bosch, Muthuswamy annihilate Zimbabwe as South Africa complete 2-0 whitewash

South Africa completed a 2-0 whitewash over Zimbabwe as they beat them by an innings and 236 runs in the second Test at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo. Being asked to follow on by South Africa's stand-in skipper Wiaan Mulder, Zimbabwe began Day 3 on 51/1, trailing by 405 runs in the second innings. The hosts put up an improved batting performance but it wasn't enough to pose a threat to South Africa, who bundled them out for 220 as only Nick Welsh (55) and Craig Ervine (49) notched up good Bosch (4/38) and Senuran Muthuswamy (3/77) were the pick of the bowlers for the visitors, who helped them register their third-largest victory margin in Tests. Wiaan Mulder was adjudged Player of the Match for his record-breaking innings of 367* (334) — the highest score by a South Africa batter in was also adjudged Player of the Series for scoring 531 runs from three innings — more than twice of Sean Williams, who finished as second-highest run scorer of the rubber with 257 runs. ‘Virat Kohli is a beast on the field': Ravi Shastri reminisces India's 2021 Lord's Test win

Ahead of the Lord's Test between India and England this week, former India coach Ravi Shastri raved about the impact that Virat Kohli had on the team as captain when the two sides previously met in 2021. India beat England by 151 runs on that occasion, with the fast-bowling lineup of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma skittling England's batting within 52 overs on a dramatic final day. Shastri spoke highly about Kohli setting the mindset of the team as captain. 'Off the field and on the field, (his personality) is like chalk and cheese,' he said on Sky Sports. 'Off it, he is a mellow, chilled guy but on it, he is a beast. He is at you, he is at your throat, he'll look you in the eye, and play hard cricket.' 'We had a chat in the morning (of Day 5) and all we said 'try and get England to chase 170, and we're winning this.' We knew if give them 170-180 (to chase) we could win this game with the attack we had. We had an excellent attack.' Despite being written off by a large chunk of the British press, Shastri said the 89-run stand between tailenders Bumrah and Shami gave the team the belief, before Kohli led them out to victory. 'Every newspaper had England as favourites. I used to pick up the papers in the morning and on the bus, I read all of this,' he said. 'We reach the ground and the last-wicket partnership adds another 100. That lifted the dressing room. It was COVID time, so the long room (at Lord's) was empty. When Bumrah and Shami came back, we made a corridor for them and welcomed them back. There and then, I knew Kohli is going to tell them something when they go out into the huddle.' 'That's when he said: Unleash hell,' Shastri added.

Indian batting coach unfazed by green Lord's pitch, acknowledges Jofra Archer's threat

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak isn't too worried about any kind of pitch England prepare for the third Test at Lord's. With the series level 1-1, England has hinted at preparing a lot more challenging surface for Indian batters after the run fest in the first two matches. However, India are unfazed by any type of wicket they're served for the third match of the series, revealed Sitanshu to the press ahead of the third Test set to begin on July 10 at Lord's, the Indian batting coach shared his thoughts after the first look at the pitch. Kotak revealed that the surface has a lot more grass on it than the first two Test matches, but it remains to be seen how much of it will be left by the curators for the match after the final cutting. He stated that the batters will have to spend a lot more time in the middle and get themselves accustomed to the conditions before playing extravagant shots."I think, as you said, the pitch does seem to have a bit more grass on it — as we've seen in the last two matches. But tomorrow, when they do the final cut — the one that happens a day before the match — only after that can we really say. And generally, the normal Lord's pitch in Tests tends to have comparatively low scores in the first and second innings. So we can expect that there might be a bit more help for the bowlers. It could be challenging for the batsmen. But I believe it's all about the mindset. Spending time on the wicket is the best friend you can have. The more time you spend out there, the more you'll adjust to the pitch. So that's probably the best approach,' said Kotak in the pre-match press conference. Furthermore, the Indian batting coach admitted the threat of Jofra Archer, who's likely to return for the third Test and said that England are within their right to prepare any kind of wicket they want.'It will be a challenge with Jofra coming in. There might be a couple of bowling changes in the England team which we don't know about. But wicket also will be a little more challenging, it seems, and after the last two games, if as a host England think that they want to give a little bit more challenging wicket, it's fair enough. And it will be a challenge for anyone on any wicket. So I'm not really thinking that it will be very challenging. You bat well, it's fine, if you don't bet well, any wicket can be challenging,' he recently made a comeback to the Test team after four years, having last played against India in 2021. He recently scalped 1/32 in 18 overs on his red-ball comeback for Sussex and also scored 31 (34). The 30-year-old has played two Test matches against India and picked four wickets at an average of questions being raised on England's inexperienced bowling attack, the management will be desperate to play Archer at Lord's. They have already added Gus Atkinson to the squad to reinforce their fast bowling. It remains to be seen if including some fresh legs in the playing XI will have any impact on England bowling, which has been taken apart by India so far in the series.- EndsMust Watch
