Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest avoids injured list after 'scary' situation with finger

Detroit Tigers right-handed reliever Will Vest has avoided the injured list.
The 30-year-old, who leads the Tigers with 12 saves, felt discomfort in his right pinky finger in the eighth inning Sunday, June 15, against the Cincinnati Reds at Comerica Park. He exited the game alongside a trainer after throwing a wild pitch.

But Vest won't miss an extended period of time.
"I don't know what it was, other than I'm glad to get the news on the off day that everything checked out," manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday, June 17, before the opener of a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. "We'll go day-to-day and see what he can do for us, but I was very thankful that it sounds like we've avoided anything more major."

It was positive news.
"On the last pitch, I felt something zing a little bit in my fingers," Vest said Tuesday, just two days after the injury. "I lost a little bit of feeling in the bottom two (fingers). We were just being pretty cautious. We went to get some tests. Thankfully, everything was good."
Vest has a 2.57 ERA with nine walks and 37 strikeouts across 35 innings in 32 games, racking up 12 saves in 15 opportunities. He has produced 0.9 fWAR, which is tied for 14th among 182 qualified relievers in the big leagues. The next best Tiger is right-handed reliever Brenan Hanifee, tied for 63rd with 0.4 fWAR.

This is Vest's fifth MLB season.
His 26.6% strikeout rate ranks in the 76th percentile among MLB pitchers, while his 6.5% walk rate ranks in the 75th percentile. He also induces ground balls at an elite 59.1% clip, ranking in the 96th percentile.
Vest is the Tigers' best reliever.
"It's uncommon," Vest said. "You don't feel that on every pitch. There are a lot of emotions going on during that, but you have to do your best to calm down and not freak out."
The Tigers employ a two-closer system with Vest and fellow righty reliever Tommy Kahnle, combining for 20 saves — Vest with 12, Kahnle with 8.
Vest owns a 2.81 ERA over the past three seasons, spanning 153⅔ innings in 149 games. He has improved his performance in each of the three seasons, posting a 2.98 ERA in 2023, a 2.82 ERA in 2024 and a 2.57 ERA in 2025.

"There's a difference between being sore and being hurt," said Vest, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2016 while pitching for his alma mater, Stephen F. Austin. "As a pitcher, you learn how to pitch through soreness. When there's something different that you haven't dealt with in the past, then it can kind of alarm you a little bit. I think that's what I went through. I wanted to make sure everything was OK."

Former Florida Star Slugger Named Starter in 2025 MLB All-Star Game

Former Florida Star Slugger Named Starter in 2025 MLB All-Star Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Florida Gator standout Kyle Tucker has been named a starting outfielder for the National League in the 2025 MLB All-Star as game, as announced by the official Chicago Cubs X account on Wednesday night. Advertisement Tucker, who was acquired by the Cubs in a blockbuster trade with the Houston Astros in December of 2024, has emerged as one of the best outfielders in baseball. A rare combination of power and speed, Tucker has amassed 129 home runs, 412 runs batted in, and 100 stolen bases dating back to 2021. The star outfielder has gotten off to a blazing start in the 2024-25 campaign, batting .290 with 17 home runs and 52 runs batted in 84 games played. Tucker's .926 OPS ranks sixth in the entire major league, a testament to his ability to hit for power while also prioritizing contact. Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker (30) is greeted in the dugout after scoring against the Colorado Rockies during the first inning at Wrigley Banks-Imagn Images The Cubs, who sport a 51-35 record and sit atop the NL Central right before the All-Star break, will be doing everything in their power to extend Tucker when he becomes a free agent in the summer of 2025. Advertisement Tucker's teammate, Pete Crow-Armstrong, also earned himself a spot in the All-Star game, underscoring the meteoric rise of the Cubs this season. As the Cubs navigate the second half of the season, they will continue to rely on Tucker to lead them to wins. Tucker, now a four-time All-Star, continue to add accolades to his already decorated career. With the Cubs looking like a major contender for the World Series this year, perhaps Tucker can deliver even more magic come October. Dodgers ace Kershaw notches 3,000th strikeout

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw acknowledges the applause after becoming only the 20th pitcher to record 3,000 career strikeouts (Harry How) Los Angeles Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw became just the 20th pitcher to record 3,000 career strikeouts on Wednesday in a 5-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Kershaw, 37, reached the milestone when he struck out Vinny Capra in the sixth inning at Dodger Stadium. Advertisement Widely regarded as one of the greatest pitchers in Major League Baseball history, Kershaw had gone into Wednesday's game needing three strikeouts to reach the 3,000 mark. With a raucous home crowd roaring him on, he made hard work of reaching the milestone as the White Sox took a surprise early lead over the World Series champions. Kershaw struck out former team-mate Miguel Vargas in the third inning and then bagged Lenyn Sosa in the fifth to set up his storybook moment in the sixth. The Dodger Stadium crowd roared its appreciation for the pitcher as he reached the 3,000-mark, giving him a lengthy standing ovation. Advertisement Kershaw, a three-time National League Cy Young Award-winner and a former NL Most Valuable Player in 2014, has played the entirety of his career at the Dodgers, making his major league debut in 2008. The Dodgers went on to win Wednesday's game with a dramatic three-run rally in the ninth inning, Freddie Freeman walking it off to complete a 5-4 victory. "It was such a special night all the way around, it really was," Kershaw said. "Running out there for the sixth inning and hearing that crowd roar was up there for me in special moments. "I couldn't have asked for anything more. Give the White Sox credit -- they didn't make it easy on me at all. Advertisement "So it was a tough night. But what a way to end it with Freddie coming up clutch at the end. "I told my team-mates -- winning individual awards are great, but if you don't have anybody to celebrate it with, it doesn't matter." Kershaw joins two other active MLB pitchers in the 3,000 club -- Justin Verlander, who is 10th in the all-time list with 3,471 strikeouts, and Max Scherzer, who is 11th on 3,419. Nolan Ryan heads the all-time rankings with 5,714 strikeouts. rcw/dh
