SAPS officers arrested for stealing washing powder after delivery truck crashed

Two Limpopo-based police and a cleaner employed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) have been arrested following a joint investigation led by the Limpopo provincial anti-corruption unit.
The three SAPS employees stationed at Modimolle police station have been charged with theft and defeating the ends of justice.
'The arrests stem from an incident that occurred on 14 July 2025, at around 4:20am on the R101 road, approximately 10 kilometres outside Modimolle in the direction of Polokwane. A delivery truck transporting several pallets of washing powder reportedly lost control and veered off the road, causing some of its cargo to spill onto the roadside,' provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
While the driver attempted to secure the crash scene, several vehicles stopped, and individuals began looting the washing powder.
Shortly after, a marked SAPS vehicle arrived with the two police officers.
'Reports suggest that the complainant pleaded with them to assist in stopping the looting, but instead, the officers allegedly joined in, loading a significant amount of washing powder into the SAPS vehicle before driving off — leaving the driver behind as looting continued,' said Ledwaba.

The driver managed to gather key information about the incident and the identities of those involved.
The matter was swiftly reported, prompting an in-depth investigation.
'On Friday, 18 July 2025, the joint team conducted a search operation, which led to the recovery of some of the stolen items at the residence of one of the police officers. The investigation further linked a third SAPS employee — a general cleaner — to the crime,' said Ledwaba.
All three suspects, aged between 49 and 55, are on Monday scheduled to appear before the Modimolle Magistrate's Court.
Police investigations are still ongoing, and additional arrests are anticipated.
Meanwhile, the provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has condemned the involvement of SAPS employees in criminal activities.
'It is extremely disheartening when those entrusted with upholding the law violate that trust. Corruption and criminal behaviour within the ranks of the SAPS will not be tolerated. We are committed to ensuring accountability at all levels,' she said.
Police in Limpopo have appealed to community members with further information regarding the looting incident to come forward and report to their nearest police station, or via the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.

Limpopo man arrested for allegedly killing baby girl and injuring mother with pickup van
A 35-year-old Limpopo man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 13-month-old baby girl and the injury of her mother who were run over by a pickup van. Provincial police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said the incident happened on Friday at about 8pm. He said the woman and the man — her ex-boyfriend — allegedly had a heated argument while she was waiting with her baby for a taxi to take them to Segopye village, outside Polokwane. 'A taxi arrived and she and her baby boarded. On the way, the taxi driver apparently informed her that a pickup van was following the taxi. 'They [mother and child] alighted at Marothi (Makwalaneng) and her ex-boyfriend allegedly drove over them at high speed,' Ledwaba said. The woman and child were taken to hospital where the little girl died. The mother sustained injuries to her legs. Two cops granted R3000 bail over truck looting incident

Image: File Limpopo police have intensified their investigation into the looting of a cargo truck carrying washing powder, arresting two more suspects, bringing the total to five, including three officers implicated in the crime. Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that two more suspects, aged 39 and 51, were arrested at their homes on July 25 for their role in the July 14 looting of washing powder from a cargo truck. The pair are members of the public who allegedly took part in the brazen theft. Previously, The Star reported on how a cargo truck transporting washing powder veered off the road, causing its load to spill onto the road. As the driver attempted to manage the scene, chaos broke out, with bystanders, two police officers, and a SAPS cleaner allegedly seen helping themselves to the scattered goods. Instead of assisting, the officers reportedly loaded the detergent into a marked police vehicle and drove off, ignoring the driver's pleas to stop the looting. The driver, however, managed to gather critical information, which helped spark an investigation and led to several arrests. Some of the stolen items were later found at the residence of one of the implicated police officers. Ledwaba added that the three suspects, all employed by SAPS in Modimolle, were arrested for theft and defeating the ends of justice. They have since appeared in the Modimolle Magistrate's Court on July 25, where they were each granted bail. Their next court appearance is set for October 2. "Warrant Officer Frans Ndlovu (55) and Warrant Officer Lesiba Boya (49) were granted bail of R3000 each. Meanwhile, Cleaner Lucas Moima (50) was granted R5000 bail. They will appear again on 02 October 2025 for further Police investigation."
