Guwahati: In a historic step towards the revival of Assam's river-based trade and sustainable logistics, National Waterway-57 (River Kopili) was operationalised with the first-ever cargo trial run from the Govardhan Bridge in Chandrapur, Kamrup to Hatsingimari in South Samara.The movement marks the resumption of intra-state waterborne freight transport in Assam after more than a decade. The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal underlined this development as a 'watershed moment' for Inland Waterways Transport in Assam and the Northeast.The cargo vessel MV VV Giri, equipped with self-loading capacity, carried 300 metric tonnes of cement from M/s Star Cement along the 300-kilometre route on the Kopili River (NW 57) and Brahmaputra river (NW 2), with a voyage time of approximately 12 to 14 hours. With this development, more than 1168 kms of National Waterways in Assam has become operational, confirmed Sarbananda Sonowal.Hailing the development as a breakthrough in Assam's logistics transformation, Sonowal, said, 'This is a watershed moment for Assam. With the operationalisation of NW-57 on River Kopili, we are not only reviving a lost artery of trade within the state, but also taking a major step towards building an inland water transport system that is economical, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. For far too long, the rich inter web of riverine transportation remained neglected post independence. Today, with the resumption of cargo movement on four National Waterways of Assam — on Brahmaputra (NW 2), Barak (NW 16), Dhansiri (NW31) & Kopili (NW 57) — we have made 1168 kms of waterways operational, offering a reasonable, economic and effective alternative mode of transportation. This will not only decongest our roads but also bring economies of scale for our many riverine communities in Assam to prosper and secure opportunities.''Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, the Government of India has placed a strong focus on revitalising our inland waterways to create multimodal logistics corridors. Assam is an important state in this regard as IWAI, the nodal agency of our ministry, is working on multiple projects to unlock value across our river ways. From Brahmaputra to Barak, from Dhansiri to now Kopili, this is only the beginning to power the growth of the region with empowered inland waterways. Reviving waterways like the Kopili is a direct contribution to Modiji's vision of a thriving and self-reliant Northeast,' Sarbananda Sonowal added.The Union Minister noted, 'By shifting freight movement from road to waterways, we reduce emissions, ease road congestion, and lower logistics costs — all while making better use of our natural resources. Today's trial run replaces roughly 23 truckloads of cement — that's the power and potential of inland water transport.'This is the first cargo trial movement on the 46 kms long NW-57 since 2014, making it a turning point in the revival of intra-state cargo through Assam's river systems. The operationalisation of this route is in line with the Maritime India Vision 2030 and PM Gati Shakti, which aim to establish sustainable, integrated, and efficient transport infrastructure across the country.The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has been proactively working on unlocking the navigational potential of rivers across the Northeast — including the Brahmaputra (NW-2), Barak (NW-16), Dhansiri (NW-31) and now Kopili (NW-57).Sonowal further emphasised, 'The Kopili cargo movement is a symbol of the new Assam — connected, empowered, and aligned with India's growth story. We are determined to build on this success and scale up cargo and passenger movement across all our major rivers. Waterways are not just a mode of transport; they are the arteries of regional prosperity.'

Sri City: The foundation stone for a long-awaited infrastructure upgrade at the Sri City entry point on National Highway-16 was laid virtually on Sunday by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The Rs 45-crore project includes the construction of a 900-meter grade-separated junction, a critical development aimed at ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow on NH 16 while providing a dedicated underpass for vehicles entering and exiting Sri City. By aligning intersecting roads at different levels, the design eliminates stopping and crossing conflicts, significantly enhancing traffic mobility. Once completed, the upgrade will improve connectivity between Sri City and key destinations such as Chennai, Nellore, and Krishnapatnam Port. It is expected to ease congestion, reduce delays for cargo trucks and commuter buses, and maintain the smooth movement of highway traffic. Currently, heavy traffic at the junction poses challenges for long cargo vehicles and employee buses, causing operational delays. The new grade separator is set to resolve these issues by enabling seamless entry and exit, quicker turnaround times, and more reliable logistics for industries in the region. Sri City Managing Director Dr Ravindra Sannareddy stated that the project will greatly improve the movement of cargo and other vehicles, reducing waiting times and enhancing accessibility for both industries and workers. He said that the development will boost the efficiency of the Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor and align with the broader economic goals of the State. With established multi-modal connectivity – by road, rail, and proximity to major ports – Sri City has emerged as a preferred destination for global manufacturers. This infrastructure boost further strengthens its logistical edge, enabling faster and more efficient cargo movement.

Gadkari invokes Nehru-Gandhi ideals to drive mining-led jobs in Vidarbha
Drawing from the foundational ideas of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari on Sunday (August 3, 2025) said the Centre's upcoming mining policy would aim to boost industrial production while ensuring broader participation and employment — especially in backward regions like Vidarbha. Speaking at the 'India@100: Charting Vidarbha's Journey to a Developed India' event in Nagpur, Mr. Gadkari recalled Nehru's emphasis on maximising production and Gandhi's insistence on inclusive economic participation. 'Nehruji used to say, that we need maximum production, while Gandhiji used to say, 'we need maximum production with the involvement of the maximum number of people. That's the principle we want to adopt for Vidarbha. We want to increase maximum production with the involvement of maximum number of people,' Mr. Gadkari said. The Minister said that the mining sector would be central to this plan, and a new national mining policy is being finalised to remove red tape and fast-track industrial activity in resource-rich areas like Gadchiroli. 'The draft policy was recently tabled before the cabinet. While the Prime Minister had some reservations, after I shared my suggestions, he directed the cabinet secretary to review the policy with me,' Mr. Gadkari said. He emphasised the need for time-bound clearance of mining projects. 'Environmental approvals should not take more than a month. All state and central permissions must be completed within three months. From the fourth month, production should begin,' he said, underlining that such efficiency would significantly improve ease of doing business in the sector. Mr. Gadkari said the intent is not just faster economic growth but also job creation in tribal and underdeveloped districts, where mining and related sectors can be a major employment generator. Gadchiroli, part of the Vidarbha region, has recently seen industrial interest in mining and steel sectors, and Gadkari said the region is well-placed to benefit from the upcoming reforms. The Central Government's new mining policy, he added, will mark a shift from bureaucratic delays to rapid, transparent implementation.
