'Nahanam', a key Hindu wedding ritual in Kerala symbolising purification, was skipped by Reshma, who insisted on going straight to a beauty parlour before the ceremony
A 30-year-old man in Thiruvananthapuram recently uncovered an elaborate marriage fraud involving a woman named Reshma, thanks to a suspicious refusal to participate in a pre-wedding bathing ritual.
This ritual, known as 'Nahanam', is a significant part of Hindu wedding traditions in Kerala, symbolising purification before marriage.
The groom, Aneesh and Reshma had connected through a matrimonial site and, after extensive conversations, had set a wedding date. However, on the day of the wedding, Reshma refused to partake in the Nahanam ritual and insisted on going directly to a beauty parlour. This refusal raised suspicions, leading to a search of her belongings, which revealed documents of her previous marriages.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that Reshma, a resident of Udayamperoor in Ernakulam, had been involved in a decade-long scam, marrying over a dozen men, and absconding with jewellery and other valuables each time.
Reshma's pattern involved meeting men through matrimonial sites, weaving convincing tales, and then disappearing post-marriage with their possessions. The police, informed by Aneesh, confirmed that she had a two-year-old child.
In the latest case, Reshma introduced a woman as her mother. The groom, Aneesh, had posted a marriage advertisement in a matrimony group. Reshma met Aneesh and claimed she was adopted by her foster mother, who was not interested in her marriage. Aneesh believed her story and agreed to marry her.
A day before the wedding, Aneesh arranged for Reshma to stay at his friend's house, who was a member of another village panchayat. On the wedding day, Reshma refused to bathe and said she would go straight to the beauty parlour. This made Aneesh's friend suspicious of her.
The wedding and banquet preparations were all in place, but a search of Reshma's bag uncovered documents related to her previous marriages.
Acting on a complaint by Aneesh, a team led by Kattakada DySP N. Shibu, SHO V.S. Ajeesh, and SI Venu made a dramatic entry into the marriage hall and arrested Reshma. During interrogation, Reshma confessed that she had married another man just 45 days ago and was planning to marry yet another man from Thiruvananthapuram next month.
Despite her claims of seeking true love, police suspect the list of her marriages may be more extensive, though victims are reluctant to come forward due to embarrassment.
Reshma's history of deception began in 2014 when she eloped with a man from Ernakulam during her degree studies, living with him until 2017. She subsequently married four more times by 2022 and had a child in 2023. Remarkably, she managed to marry twice within ten days in 2025.

‘Human sacrifice at Kamakhya': False claim lands TV anchor, Raja Raghuvanshi's cousin in trouble with Guwahati police

A news TV anchor has landed in trouble with the police over a false claim of 'nar bali (human sacrifice)' at the Kamakhya temple in Assam, during a live conversation with a cousin of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was murdered allegedly by his wife and her lover during their honeymoon in Meghalaya earlier this year. Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati is among the most prominent Hindu shrines. (PTI File) The Guwahati Police Crime Branch summoned the news anchor along with Shrishti Raghuvanshi, a female cousin of Raja Raghuvanshi, over the alleged defamatory statement about the revered Hindu shrine, news agency ANI reported. The anchor and the channel were not named in the agency report. After the FIR was filed on charges of hurting religious sentiments, both the anchor and Raja Raghuvanshi's cousin were asked to appear before the investigation officer on June 23 and 24, but they have not done so till date, according to Ankur Jain, Joint Police Commissioner, Guwahati City Police. What happened on air The anchor, reported to be from a prominent English news channel, was interviewing Shrishti about Raja's initial disappearance in Meghalaya – the murder came to light later – when the anchor claimed that human sacrifice was carried out at as a practice at the temple in Meghalaya's neighbouring state of Assam. Shrishti purportedly agreed with the anchor's remarks during the live broadcast, the police said according to a report by NDTV. As outrage followed the false claims and the apparent suggestion that Raja may have been 'sacrificed', the channel and Shrishti apologised for a 'complete error of judgment'. Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi got married on May 11 and went for their honeymoon to Meghalaya just days later. The FIR said the anchor and Shrishti could not cite any source, religious authority or historical validation for their false claim. The anchor clearly presented the information as fact, it added. Case dominated headlines The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi made headlines for weeks as police investigation said Raja, 29, was murdered by his wife Sonam, 24, just days after they had left hometown Indore for their honeymoon in Meghalaya in May. Sonam, her alleged lover Raj and their accomplices killed Raja, police found. After an intense search for Sonam, who was reported missing while Raja's body was found, she resurfaced and surrendered. Raj and the three accomplices had already been arrested by then.

Meghalaya murder: Raja Raghuvanshi's sister summoned, action over defamatory remarks on Kamakhya Temple

Image credit: Instagram, Shrasti Raghuwanshi Shrasti Raghuvanshi, cousin of late Raja Raghuvanshi, along with a news anchor, received summons from the Guwahati Police crime branch in connection with an allegedly defamatory statement made against the Kamakhya Temple. The controversy arose from a television interview in which the news anchor allegedly made 'unverified and highly defamatory' remarks about the Kamakhya Temple, one of the most sacred Shakti Peethas in the country. The police further alleged that Shrasti Raghuwanshi, who was interviewed during the segment, supported the anchor's claims, thereby reinforcing what authorities describe as a false narrative. 'The statements are against the revered temple of Hindu deity Maa Kamakhya of Assam, thereby hurting the religious sentiments of a particular community and disturbing public peace and communal harmony in the society. Hence, the case registered,' said Ankur Jain, joint police commissioner, Guwahati City Police. Shrasti's brother, Vipin Raghuwanshi, responded to the summons saying that the family had tried to comply with police instructions. 'They asked to apologise, so we apologised. The police asked Srashti to provide them with all the evidence she had and apologise... The notice came 15 days ago from the Assam police,' he said. He further suggested that rising public interest in Shrasti's social media activity may have led to police believing that she is trying to divert attention. 'Due to the reel on Instagram, Shrasti's followers are increasing, which has led the police to suspect that she is diverting the investigation in another direction,' Vipin told ANI. According to a statement from the Guwahati City Police, a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, was served to the anchor, their news channel, and Shrasti on June 13, instructing them to appear for questioning on 23 and 24 June. However, the police said none of them have responded to the summons so far. 'In this regard, a case has been registered at the Crime Branch police station vide Crime Branch Police Station Case no 04/2025 U/S 196(2)/299/302 of BNSS, 2023. The IO has sent 35 (3) BNSS notice to the accused named in the FIR including the anchor of the news channel and Shrasti Raghuwanshi of Indore on 13-06-2025 to appear before the Investigation Officer at Crime Branch PS on 23 and 24 June, but they did not appear before IO till date,' Jain said.

Sambhal temple-mosque row: Court to hear plea for ban on namaz at disputed site on July 21

A Chandausi court in Sambhal district on Thursday (July 3, 2025) set July 21 to hear a plea seeking ban on offering of namaz at the disputed Shahi Jama Masjid, which is claimed to be Harihar Temple. The petition sought the ban on offering of Islamic prayers citing its 'disputed status'. Civil Judge (Senior Division) Aditya Singh took on record the plea filed by one Simran Gupta. The dispute had previously reached the Allahabad High Court, where the Muslim side challenged the subordinate court's order for a survey of the mosque premises. On May 19, however, the High Court upheld the trial court's decision and directed that proceedings continue there. The petitioner argued that since the site was deemed disputed by the court, Muslims too should be barred from offering prayers, just as Hindus were restricted from worship. The plea requested that the mosque be sealed and placed under the custody of the Sambhal District Magistrate. Ms. Gupta also sought to be made a petitioner on behalf of the Hindu side. Both matters will come up on July 21. The original suit was filed on November 19, 2023, by eight Hindu petitioners, including advocates Hari Shankar Jain and Vishnu Shankar Jain. On that day, a court-ordered survey was conducted at the mosque. A second round of survey was carried out on November 24, after which the matter was placed before the Chandausi Civil Court. The last hearing was held on April 28. Advocate Sri Gopal Sharma, representing the Hindu side, told PTI that the High Court's order rejecting the Muslim side plea was submitted in court as part of the record. On the other hand, advocate Qasim Jamal, representing the Shahi Jama Masjid, acknowledged that the opposing side had submitted the High Court's ruling and said the mosque's legal team would abide by whatever order the court issues. Advocate Babu Lal Saxena, who filed the petition seeking a stay on namaz, told PTI that his client Ms. Gupta believes religious activity by any group should be restricted at the disputed site until a final judgment is passed. The case saw violent clashes in Sambhal on November 24, 2024, during the second survey at the mosque site. The unrest led to the deaths of four individuals and injuries to 29 police personnel. Following the violence, police named Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rahman Barq and Shahi Jama Masjid president Zafar Ali in FIRs, along with 2,750 unidentified individuals. To date, 96 people including Zafar Ali and several advocates have been sent to jail in connection with the incident.
