This coffee shop in Kochi offers coffee, community and comforting food
Koffee Junction by Renai is a coffee shop-meets-fine dining kind of place. Located adjacent to Renai Cochin, it is an oasis of green on that very busy stretch of road. Renai Hospitality and Healthcare's Koffee Junction, which opened in December 2024, is an upmarket take on coffee shops albeit more spacious and ample [think half a football field] parking space. The interiors are done up in pastel shades of salmon pink and teal which contrast the black and white, Ottoman-tile reminiscent floor. Large glass panels make the walls which look out into greenery. It is a welcome change from most coffee shops in the city that are crammed with tables and chairs, where you can eavesdrop simultaneously on conversations on three different tables. This space is also ideal for those working out of cafes. Rather than just limit the offerings to burgers, sandwiches and pizzas, the team has curated a 'global' menu with cuisines such as continental, Asian, finding representation on it. Essentially designed as a coffee shop, 'You can also get your five course meal: soup, starter to dessert!' says Aneesh K Sankaranarayanan, sous chef in charge of Koffee Junction. The chef recommends we take that route since it is lunch time. So, first comes chicken chilli coriander soup, a tangy flavour bomb, which whets the appetite and if you have blocked sinuses…it would open those as well. After the soup comes loaded fries covered by a blanket of creamy cheese sauce and spiced mayonnaise, the jalapenos and onions giving the crunch and bite! Then come fish and chips, 'not crumb fried but batter fried as it is done in the United Kingdom. We wanted to keep it different, and stick to the original,' Aneesh adds. The menu is the work of more than four months of research and trials. 'We wanted something different, our take on the original recipes,' he says. The Cajun grilled chicken on a bed of stir fried veggies, potato wedges and mushroom sauce is a nod to Mexican cuisine. The flavours on this plate — the mildly spiced veggies and the wedges work well with the Cajun spice. The mushroom sauce brings in the oomph to the dish which otherwise could have been one dimensional. From the rice bowl menu, the chef picks the Cantonese honey glazed pork rice bowl which does not work. The sweetness of the pork does not complement the blandness of the rice — a dash of spice might have given the dish the much deserved kick of flavour. Instead of dessert, we sampled red velvet shake and Lotus Biscoff shake. The red velvet shake with bobbing ice cubes is refreshingly light and not too sweet, while the Biscoff shake, which had a dollop of vanilla ice cream, is thick and creamy in a way that makes one wish that it would never finish. The menu is rather expansive, spanning salads, burgers, wraps, rolls, waffles, smoothie and rice bowls. The coffee menu too is extensive, apart from the expressos and machiatos, there are also manual brews too. As a wrap to the meal, we sample the French press, made of crushed Arabica beans coffee. The colour and contents of the French press resemble tea, but it is coffee the colour of tea which implies that it is possibly lightly roasted. Anyway, it is one of the best no-milk coffees for the coffee curious who might not have the stomach for the caffeine hit a shot of expresso is.

ED bribery case: Kerala HC tells prosecution to produce case diary
Kochi: High court on Wednesday orally directed the prosecution to produce the case diary in the pre-arrest bail plea filed by Enforcement Directorate (ED) assistant director Shekhar Kumar, who is facing a vigilance case for allegedly demanding a Rs 2 crore bribe from a Kollam-based cashew businessman to derail an ED investigation. During hearing before the bench of Justice A Badharudeen, the public prosecutor sought additional time to obtain instructions from the state govt regarding the matter. Granting the request, HC adjourned the hearing to June 17 and extended the interim order restraining Kumar's arrest until then. The case originates from a complaint filed by cashew trader Aneesh Babu, who alleged that ED officials demanded a bribe to halt an investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The PMLA proceedings were initiated following a police case registered against Aneesh for allegedly cheating local traders by taking advance payments for imported cashew nuts and failing to deliver the goods. In his complaint, Aneesh alleged that two middlemen, Wilson Varghese and Mukesh Kumar, approached him on behalf of the ED officer and demanded Rs 2 crore to stop the ED probe. The vigilance department arrested both middlemen, who, during interrogation, allegedly named Shekhar Kumar, leading to his arraignment as the first accused in the case. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Kumar, in his plea, has denied any involvement and contended that there is no material linking him to the arrested individuals. Refusal To Take Pre-Wedding Bath Finally Exposed Kerala Bride Who Married 12+ Men In 10 Years
Last Updated: 'Nahanam', a key Hindu wedding ritual in Kerala symbolising purification, was skipped by Reshma, who insisted on going straight to a beauty parlour before the ceremony A 30-year-old man in Thiruvananthapuram recently uncovered an elaborate marriage fraud involving a woman named Reshma, thanks to a suspicious refusal to participate in a pre-wedding bathing ritual. This ritual, known as 'Nahanam', is a significant part of Hindu wedding traditions in Kerala, symbolising purification before marriage. The groom, Aneesh and Reshma had connected through a matrimonial site and, after extensive conversations, had set a wedding date. However, on the day of the wedding, Reshma refused to partake in the Nahanam ritual and insisted on going directly to a beauty parlour. This refusal raised suspicions, leading to a search of her belongings, which revealed documents of her previous marriages. Upon investigation, it was discovered that Reshma, a resident of Udayamperoor in Ernakulam, had been involved in a decade-long scam, marrying over a dozen men, and absconding with jewellery and other valuables each time. Reshma's pattern involved meeting men through matrimonial sites, weaving convincing tales, and then disappearing post-marriage with their possessions. The police, informed by Aneesh, confirmed that she had a two-year-old child. In the latest case, Reshma introduced a woman as her mother. The groom, Aneesh, had posted a marriage advertisement in a matrimony group. Reshma met Aneesh and claimed she was adopted by her foster mother, who was not interested in her marriage. Aneesh believed her story and agreed to marry her. A day before the wedding, Aneesh arranged for Reshma to stay at his friend's house, who was a member of another village panchayat. On the wedding day, Reshma refused to bathe and said she would go straight to the beauty parlour. This made Aneesh's friend suspicious of her. The wedding and banquet preparations were all in place, but a search of Reshma's bag uncovered documents related to her previous marriages. Acting on a complaint by Aneesh, a team led by Kattakada DySP N. Shibu, SHO V.S. Ajeesh, and SI Venu made a dramatic entry into the marriage hall and arrested Reshma. During interrogation, Reshma confessed that she had married another man just 45 days ago and was planning to marry yet another man from Thiruvananthapuram next month. Despite her claims of seeking true love, police suspect the list of her marriages may be more extensive, though victims are reluctant to come forward due to embarrassment. Reshma's history of deception began in 2014 when she eloped with a man from Ernakulam during her degree studies, living with him until 2017. She subsequently married four more times by 2022 and had a child in 2023. Remarkably, she managed to marry twice within ten days in 2025. First Published: June 11, 2025, 12:17 IST
