Rosanna Arquette: ‘You pay the price for being outspoken'
Do you think the entertainment industry still has issues with strong, outspoken, independent women? CaptainLibYou definitely pay a price for being strong, outspoken and independent. But the women whom I admire, like Jane Fonda and Ava DuVernay, are strong, independent and speak their minds.
What are your memories of shooting After Hours with Scorsese? Is it true Scorsese later advised you to work on Mike Hodges' Black Rainbow? Glider and Bauhaus66I had a great time. It was one of those experiences that lives with you. We just celebrated the 40-year anniversary. Something happens when on a night shoot. At 4am, there's a giddiness, a silliness. Working with Scorsese is a dream. And yes, we were on the set of New York Stories and he said: 'There's a script I think you should read, I love this director, Mike Hodges.' So I did it.
What was it like working with Nick Nolte in New York Stories? Kellysahero1970He was such a character. He made me laugh a lot. He is one of the most brilliant, eccentric actors I've ever worked with, and he knows how to connect. I loved him a lot.
What led you into directing, and your documentary, Searching for Debra Winger? repoman71I made it such a long time ago – gosh, 23 years ago. I was a young mother and I had my career. I wanted to talk to other female actors who were balancing their life with their art. That's kind of the exploration of the documentary: how do we do it all? Something always seems to take the back seat. For me, it was hard to put motherhood in the back seat. I remember my daughter's third birthday. I was supposed to have the day off, but we overshot filming, so I wasn't going to be able to fly home from Vancouver and I was absolutely devastated.
I thought: 'This is the most horrible thing. I'm gonna miss my daughter's birthday. It's not worth being an actress.' But then her dad flew her up to surprise me. It got me thinking: how do you make sure your marriage doesn't take a back seat to your career? It reminds me of Michael Powell's The Red Shoes, where she can't make that decision between choosing her life or her art, and she ends up dancing in front of a train. So I think I was just exploring that with other women, asking them how they do it, and it ended up being a really great conversation. I'd like to revisit it now. It's a whole different world.
What was it like making Desperately Seeking Susan, as Madonna went from hip, underground dance act to global superstar? And were you tempted to keep the jacket? HenleyRegatta and thatneilguyShe exploded as we were making the film. It was pretty intense and overwhelming for her, but she handled it great. She wasn't a global superstar yet. She became one while we were doing that. She had hits, but then I remember looking at her on the cover of Rolling Stone on set and thinking: 'Wow!' And I did end up keeping the jacket, but I gave it to Peter Gabriel's daughters and now we can't find it, which is a bummer, as I'd like to have donated it to a museum.
I saw you recently, speaking at the No Kings rally in west Hollywood. Have you always been an activist? PaulMarinerI grew up in a family of activists. My mother was an activist. My father was an activist. Our whole family are activists in some way, shape or form. Civil rights, human rights, and the planet's rights are really what I fight for. And, more than ever now, because I'm living in a country that unfortunately is becoming what seems like an authoritarian dictatorship. It's very frightening.
What was your experience of working on the 1996 Welsh/Hollywood short, Valley Girls, and what did you think of the very quintessentially Welsh turns of phrase? johnnylewisIt was such a long time ago, I can't even remember doing this. Is that terrible? I can't remember a lot of the things I did. I just don't really go and look at my work afterwards. I did see Pulp Fiction in a hotel recently. It was past my scene, so I watched the rest of it. But I don't sit and secretly watch myself.
I absolutely love the 1988 Luc Besson movie, The Big Blue. Was the shoot as sun-kissed and blissful as I've always imagined or was it a real slog being dragged to all those beautiful locations? 11LFO11It was nine months of sun-kissed and blissful. My daughter [Zoë Bleu Sidel] is about to star in Luc Besson's Dracula – A Love Tale, with Christoph Waltz and Caleb Landry Jones. She had to screen test and go through all the process that actors go through. She's the same age I was when I did The Big Blue, which seems wild.
What was it like working with John Cleese in Silverado? PeteTheBeatI would call him 'The Professor'. He was such a wonderful man and suggested books because I was very upset that I'd never been to college. So he was like my professor.
If you had a time machine, like in your new film Futra Days, where would you go? TurangaLeela2I'm still trying to learn how to be in the present. But, if I had a time machine, I'd probably turn back time to the last election in America.
Am I gonna be in trouble if I say that? Because it seems like you can't say anything. I'm just trying to understand: are we in America? Are we in Russia? That's what seems to be happening here.
Do you do Rosanna by Toto at karaoke? McScootikinsGod, no. Please. It would be so embarrassing. I've done Patti Smith, and Nirvana. If I do anything, I'll do that.
Has there been a role you wanted that would have taken your career to new heights? Kal_85Years ago, before it became the gigantic movie, there was an incredible script called 3000, that I was going to do with Sean Connery. It ended up going away and then coming back in its new form: Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. It originally didn't have a happy ending. I've heard my sister [Patricia Arquette] tell the same story. Apparently, she was also up for it, but was too young. I dunno. Maybe?
Futra Days in on digital platforms from 21 July

Julia Fox catches the eye in a high-cut American football-inspired leotard and low-slung jeans during solo outing
Julia Fox was sure to catch the eye as she rocked an American football-inspired leotard during a casual solo outing in Los Angeles on Monday. The actress, 35, known for her flamboyant sense of style, oozed confidence as she modelled the high-cut red top which showed off a hint of skin. She teamed her shoulder pad clad top with a pair of low-slung jeans which boasted a quirky, underwear-style waistband. Julia teamed her outfit with a red visor and trendy oversized shades, which she teamed with a black and white clutch and black pointed heels. Not content with rocking one sports-inspired look, the stunner later wowed as she modelled a football inspired look wile promoting her latest movie HIM. Kanye West 's ex turned heads in a white sports jersey with a floral embellishment, teaming the look with floral lace leggings and a pillbox hat with netted veil. She rounded off the bizarre ensemble with a sporty handbag and towering white heels. Back in June, Julia proved she could ditch her outlandish, exhibitionist style - at least temporarily - in favor of a more traditional, natural look while promoting her new movie The Trainer in New York City. The former dominatrix bleached her natural brunette mane into oblivion beginning in February 2024, leaving her with a damaged pixie cut, and she only stopped bleaching her eyebrows last month after doing so since 2023. Julia bared her shoulders in a Jean Paul Gaultier spring 1997 mesh tube dress, featuring an old Hollywood print, along with brown knee-high boots and darker brown bag selected by her BFF/stylist Briana Andalore. Hairstylist John Novotny coiffed Fox's waist-length brunette wig, which was parted in the middle. The Milan-born, Manhattan-raised provocateur's wavy hairpiece more than resembled her natural brunette mane from back when she enjoyed a five-week fling with disgraced designer-rapper Kanye 'Ye' West in early 2022. Julia reflected on the high-profile split, which came before she started filming The Trainer, while making her first-ever appearance on CBS Mornings with writer-star Vito Schnabel. 'I was going through a lot during that time. I was coming off of, like, a very public breakup. It was horrible,' Fox lamented to Gayle King. 'And I just wanted to go to work and be able to just be somebody else. I loved being her. I feel like I have so much in common with her in terms of you know being, like, overlooked or not taken seriously or just dismissed. 'And I feel like that's why our characters kind of just, like, had this unique love story.' Meanwhile, audiences can next catch as the seductive Elsie White in Justin Tipping's NFL satanic horror film HIM - hitting US theaters September 19 and UK cinemas October 3 - produced by Jordan Peele. The Down the Drain singer has also been hard at work producing and judging the second season of her design competition OMG Fashun, but Peacock postponed the May release 'due to unexpected delays' but it's 'still in active production.' On the personal front, the 360 video vixen has primary custody of her four-year-old son Valentino from her three-year marriage to Brooklyn private pilot Peter Artemiev, which ended in 2022.

Clip of glam Sydney Sweeney expertly shooting targets goes viral as her ‘secret MAGA life' emerges after anti-woke ad
A CLIP of Sydney Sweeney blasting targets at a shooting range has gone viral - as she's adopted by the MAGA movement and praised by Trump. The video resurfaced after President Trump heaped praise on the actress's "anti-woke" American Eagle jeans advert and she was revealed to be a registered Republican. 9 9 The clip from 2019 shows a younger Sydney expertly burying rounds into a series of human-shaped dummies at the firing range. She appears well-practiced, skilfully banging two bullets into each in quick succession without so much as a flinch. At the end, she flashes a smile to the camera and holsters the weapon. Since Sydney starred in the controversial American Eagle jeans ad, clues that point to her living a secret MAGA life have emerged. The 27-year-old grew up in a small, Catholic, Trump-supporting town in Washington with her father, mother and younger brother Trent - and has previously said she had a "religious" upbringing. After accepting her breakout Euphoria role, Sydney revealed she had been nervous about how her community would react. She told Stylecaster in 2021: "What's crazy - and this is going to sound really bad- is when I first got sent the audition, I was too nervous to go do it. A surprise party she threw for her mom's 60th birthday drew considerable attention when pics were shared of the guests wearing MAGA-style hats and "Blue Lives Matter" shirts. And now, she has starred in the American Eagle ad which has seriously riled voices on the left, who claim it promotes a racial ideal, but delighted the right who hail it as the "end of woke advertising". Trump pours praise on Sydney Sweedy amid 'good jeans' American Eagle ad storm as her voter registration revealed The ad makes a play on the words "jeans" and "genes" - and the main tagline is "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans". It's been claimed that the promotion of Sydney's blonde hair and blue eye traits suggests they are superior to alternative genes. Sydney hasn't publicly commented on the furore stirred up by the ad, but made her first appearance at a screening of her upcoming film "Americana" on Monday. She was heckled by a fan who shouted: "Stop the ad, that is being racist," according to TMZ. 9 9 9 However, she got into her vehicle without responding. American Eagle defended its advertisement, but removed the video from its social media accounts. It then emerged over the weekend that the actress has been a registered Republican since June 2024 - and she soon received praise right from the top. President Trump was delighted when a reporter told him about Sydney's political leanings, and promptly declared that he "loves" her "fantastic" ad. He said on Sunday night: "That's one I wouldn't have known but I'm glad you told me that. 9 9 'If Sydney Sweeny is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.' Trump then doubled down on his enthusiastic support and cemented the American Eagle ad as a bastion of the "anti-woke" agenda. He declared in a Monday morning Truth Social post that the campaign is "the HOTTEST" and went on to slam "woke" companies like "stupid" Jaguar and Bud Light for their own advertising. Jaguar recently put out an ad with models dressed in brightly-coloured, flamboyant clothing - but no cars or the brand's logo. Trump insisted the British manufacturer, whose CEO resigned on last week, should have learned from Bug Light - which suffered a boycott and major losses after an advert featuring a transgender influencer. The President's conclusion: "Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be." What is the American Eagle controversy? JEANS brand American Eagle sparked a social media frenzy and intense controversy with its latest ad campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney. The series of ads make a play on the words "jeans" and "genes". Their most controversial element is the tagline: "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," which some have interpreted as implying her blonde hair, blue eye traits are superior to others. Critics claim that the ads glorify a specific beauty standard and racial ideal. TikTok videos commenting on the campaign have racked up millions of view, and some of the ad clips have been removed from the brand's official accounts. However, American Eagle released a statement defending its campaign, insisting: "'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about the jeans." Right-wing figures have hailed the episode as a triumph for the "anti-woke" movement. The Euphoria star has not commented herself on the controversial ad.

Orlando Bloom blasted as an ‘idiot' for ‘inappropriate' beach snap of Daisy, 4, & Katy Perry is nowhere to be seen
ORLANDO Bloom has come under fire for sharing a naked photo of his four-year-old daughter Daisy Dove Bloom on the beach. The Hollywood actor, 48, later deleted the snap, before resharing it with an emoji covering her. The photo had been part of a sweet carousal of images of Orlando spending quality time with Daisy, who she shares with ex-fiancée Katy Perry. 10 However, many berated him for the "inappropriate" photo, which showed him carrying Daisy into the ocean to go swimming. Hours before he had uploaded the image without a yellow love heart emoji covering her. Taking to Reddit, one shocked person wrote: 'Some parents are such idiots. They don't post this child's face on social media, so they do understand privacy but then post a naked pic. Make it make sense.' Another agreed: 'I can't help but feel like you have to be so out of touch to think it's okay to post a naked photo of your daughter, to a huge fanbase, and not consider the repercussions. 'I can understand how that might be a meaningful photo for a parent, but not on the interweb for millions to see.' And a third added: 'Poor thing. I know having everything you desire would be nice, but having a celeb as a parent sounds like a special kind of headache for kids. Having a guardian so detached from reality is scary.' Meanwhile, one pointed out: 'I'm not saying him posting it was ill-intent or anything, but there are people on social media who will use it for ill-intent and inappropriate reasons.' However, many people were quick to defend the Lord of the Rings actor and said it was 'innocent.' One wrote: 'She's gonna be four… I don't understand everyone's comments here. She's going swimming with her father. Heartbroken Katy Perry told pals in January that Orlando Bloom relationship was OVER - as star removes engagement ring 'Again she is four. This is not, not a normal thing… he covered her butt in the picture.. 'I used to run around naked until I was almost seen and a lot of the kids I grew up with did also. 'It's innocent and the fact that people are trying to make it weird ARE WEIRD AF.' And one said: 'Jeez my childhood photos would have had loads of stickers over them, bare butts everywhere.' In the other snaps, Orlando shared Daisy running along the beach flying a kite. And one showed him and Daisy joined by a male friend and a young boy overlooking the ocean, before they headed to the beach to play with a bucket and spade. The caption on the series of snaps was 'Some fun being had [sun emoji]', with the other images being clothed. KATY'S FLIRTY FRIENDSHIP It comes after Orlando has a jokey response to ex Katy's "flirty friendship" with Justin Trudeau. The US Sun exclusively reported how the politician was spotted at Katy's Montreal gig - amid fears from her pals over her new connection. Teenage Dream songstress Katy, who is single after recently splitting from fiancé Orlando, is on tour in Canada and had dinner with divorced Justin - the former Prime Minister of Canada - on Monday evening. Orlando and Katy started dating in 2016 and got engaged three years later. However, The Sun understands they had difficult conversations about their future over Christmas and in January but struggled to make a firm decision. 10 10 He was seen beaming in photos published by TMZ as he chatted to the mum of one while dining at Le Violon restaurant in Montreal. On Wednesday night, fans then caught him in the crowd singing and dancing at Perry's concert at the Bell Centre as part of her Lifetimes Tour, fueling further romance buzz. Now Orlando, who "made his debut as a single man" at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez 's A-List nuptials in June, has waded in. The Lord Of The Rings alum commented on an Instagram post by The Onion which featured an AI image of him having dinner with ex German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The caption joked how the pair were spotted "sipping wine and slurping oysters." They also joked how he "couldn't keep his eyes off" the politician. Clearly appreciating the tongue in cheek reference to his baby momma, he posted three hand clap Emoji icons underneath. PERRY WORRYING Earlier this year, Roar hitmaker Katy was said to have already told pals their relationship was as good as done - as reports claimed Orlando "won't win her back." Yet pals of the chart star have been quick to express their concern. "Katy's friends want her to have fun after her split from Orlando, but she's still very much grieving the end of their relationship and the fact that she never made it down the aisle," an insider told The U.S. Sun. "They don't want her to rush into something serious, and have heard Justin has a bit of a reputation as a womanizer, and that he loves the fame game. "It is still a very new flirty friendship, but friends are hoping she takes it slow with the next person and chooses a man who loves her for her." A second source added to us: "Justin isn't a guy who is easy to 'catch' and he has been having a lot of women trying to date him since he separated from his wife. "He is someone that has some particular preferences, and he enjoys people who are genuinely nice and that see life in their own way. "Katy has her own 'world' and she is someone who is an extrovert, and she loves to talk about many different topics, and he really loves that." Orlando Bloom 'did NOT approve' of Katy Perry's space trip ORLANDO Bloom did not privately approve of his fiancee Katy Perry's decision to take part in the controversial Blue Origin flight, The U.S. Sun has exclusively learned. Though Katy, 40, gushed Orlando, 48, was "all about the journey" in a radio interview, a source claimed the actor "did not think going on the mission was a good idea." The source insisted Orlando "knew she would get backlash" from the mission, and was "frustrated" and "disappointed" with her decision to take part in it. "From day one, Orlando didn't think going on the Blue Origin mission was a good idea, and knew she would face backlash," the source explained of the actor, who has been engaged to the pop star since 2019. "He always thought it was a stupid idea and she wouldn't get anything positive out of it." Reps for Katy and Orlando did not respond to The U.S. Sun's request for comment.
