Former Florida Gator Jac Caglianone heads to Kansas City Royals' injury list

USA Today28-07-2025
The Kansas City Royals placed former Florida Gator and outfielder Jac Caglianone on the 10-day injured list on Sunday due to a left hamstring strain.
The injury came while Caglianone fielded a double in the right-center gap on Saturday, according to Anne Rogers of MLB.com. He felt the tightness again while running to first on a double play ball and left the game. Hamstrings can be particularly problematic for some, but Caglianone doesn't have much of a lower-body injury history.
Caglianone is hoping the recovery time doesn't extend beyond the 10 days, and Royals manager Matt Quatararo described it as a "mild" injury.
Since being called up at the beginning of June, Caglianone is slashing .147/.205/.280 with five home runs over 150 at-bats as the everyday right fielder. He's struck out 34 times to just eight walks, signaling a bit of an adjustment period for the Gators' home run king.
Remember, a little over a year ago, Caglianone was still wearing the Orange and Blue. A meteoric rise through the minor leagues doesn't guarantee immediate success at the highest level. Getting time to heal and rest could be exactly what he needs.
He'll have to find a different defensive spot, though. Kansas City just added Randall Grichuk, who should take over the duties in right field. First base or designated hitter is better for Caglianone's long-term health, anyway.

Latest 2026 bracketology projects UNC basketball to face familiar foe in NCAA Tournament

Preseason bracketology matchups rarely happen. The North Carolina Tar Heels' basketball program is looking to avoid what happened in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. After barely getting into the tournament, UNC beat San Diego State in the first four before falling to Ole Miss in the opening round. Season-long issues then resurfaced in the Tar Heels' loss to the Rebels and this past offseason saw an overhaul of the roster. In Joe Lunardi's latest round of 2026 bracketology, UNC earns a six seed in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. North Carolina is projected to a familiar opponent, 11-seed San Diego State, who advances via winning a First Four matchup. If this actual matchup takes place, Lunardi will cement himself as the top bracketologist in college basketball history (not that he already isn't). Lunardi might anger fans occasionally, but he's pretty accurate. Whereas the Tar Heels carried a guard-heavy roster last year, their upcoming roster will be post-heavy. UNC will carry 7-footers Henri Veesaar and Ivan Matlekovic at center, plus 6'11" Jarin Stevenson and 6'9" Caleb Wilson at power forward. Senior Seth Trimble and Colorado State transfer Kyan Evans will hold down the North Carolina backcourt, with freshman Derek Dixon and Virginia Tech transfer Jaydon Young behind them. If the Tar Heels make a deep run into the NCAA Tournament, Hubert Davis won't have to worry about his job security. UNC's roster is much deeper this coming season, despite plenty of new players, but that depth needs to be proven during non-conference gameplay. Former Notre Dame QB Steve Angeli praises Riley Leonard, discusses his clutch CFP play

Steve Angeli didn't receive a lot of playing time for Notre Dame last season because Riley Leonard was firmly entrenched as the starting quarterback. For the season, Angeli went 24-of-36 passing for 268 yards and three touchdowns against zero interceptions. But the now Syracuse Orange signal-caller did have an integral part in Notre Dame's run to the College Football Playoff national championship game. During the Orange Bowl CFP semifinal against Penn State, the now Indianapolis Colts rookie Leonard exited the game during the final drive of the second quarter with a possible head injury. Angeli came in to lead a 52-yard scoring drive that featured three third-down conversions and ended in a field goal that cut Notre Dame's deficit to 10-3 entering halftime of an eventual 27-24 Fighting Irish win. Angeli spoke to the local media at Syracuse on Monday about Leonard and that clutch FG drive. "That was the most fun I had playing football last year," Angeli told reporters … "Just having that opportunity was special." It's safe that say that while he didn't get to see the field often in South Bend, he loved his time there. Angeli, who completed 77 percent of his passes for 504 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception in 2023, has two years of eligibility remaining with the Orange. Braves Predicted To Cut Ties With $15 Million Trade Acquisition This Season

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. This season has been a complete disaster for the Atlanta Braves. Rather than contend for the World Series, the Braves have dealt with injury after injury. They've been crippled beyond recognition. While this season is a lost cause, the future is still right in front of them. There are moves to be made, especially with some of the talented players set to return from injuries in the near future. Eric Cole of The House That Hank Built recently predicted the Braves would cut ties with veteran pitcher Erick Fedde once one of their starting pitchers returns from injury this year. KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - JULY 29: Erick Fedde #22 of the Atlanta Braves throws a pitch in the first inning against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on July 29, 2025 in Kansas City,... KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - JULY 29: Erick Fedde #22 of the Atlanta Braves throws a pitch in the first inning against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on July 29, 2025 in Kansas City, Missouri. More"So this is assuming that the Braves get one of their many injured pitchers back and one of the fill-ins has to go. Bryce Elder can be infuriating, but he has shown at least some competency, and he can be optioned anyway," Cole wrote. "The main candidates are Erick Fedde and Carlos Carrasco, and it is a close call between the two starters, but it feels like Carrasco is the kind of veteran mentor the Braves want around, whereas Fedde will have to earn the right to stay, and that seems unlikely." Once the Braves have a starting pitcher return from injury, Fedde will be designated for assignment or cut again. He's not a very competitive big leaguer at this stage of his career, and it seems like the Braves only added him to eat innings while their rotation was injured. With Hurston Waldrep throwing well in the Speedway Classic, the Braves already have one youngster to stay on the roster. Fedde will lose his spot in the big leagues when a prospect is ready or when an injured starter is set to return to Atlanta.
