Sweden thrash 10-woman Germany 4-1 to top Euro 2025 group, set up potential England clash

Malay Mail19 hours ago
ZURICH, July 13 — Sweden laid down a marker at Euro 2025 by confidently beating 10-woman Germany 4-1 on Saturday and topping Group C with a perfect nine points.
Peter Gerhardsson's team will face the runners-up from Group D, potentially European champions England, in the quarter-finals after sweeping aside Germany with a powerful display in Zurich.
Sweden fans sung ABBA songs in the stands of the Letzigrund Stadium as goals from Stina Blackstenius, Smilla Holmberg, Fridolina Rolfo and Lina Hurtig saw off the Germans.
Sweden were hammered 4-0 by England in the semi-finals of the last European Championship three years ago but Gerhardsson said he is looking forward raher than backwards to that heavy defeat.
'I don't focus on that game. That's history, it's a new game if we play England, we'll write a new history, a better history, a good history,' he told reporters.
'We can only take it one game at a time. Today we had Germany and now we have the quarter-final. Maybe it's a dull answer but that's how I work.'
Germany were among the favourites for overall victory ahead of the tournament but after taking an early lead through Jule Brand, Christian Wueck's team did little else to justify their billing.
And they were done for once Carlotta Wamser was sent off for handballing a goal-bound shot in the 31st minute.
Germany finished on six points and will face the winner of Group D in the next round, with France currently leading the way ahead of Sunday's final round of matches before the knockout stage.
'We were playing very well until we conceded and then you could see the quality of Sweden, and with the red card it became very difficult,' said Wueck.
'We'll shake it off and we're happy to play in the quarter-finals, whether it's against the French, the English, or whoever.'
Rampant Sweden
Both teams were already through to the quarters before kick-off, with Poland winning their dead rubber with fellow eliminated team Denmark 3-2 in Lucerne.
And Germany, who are now on the same side of the draw as world champions Spain, looked in fine form when Wamser put through Brand to squeeze the opening goal past Jennifer Falk in the seventh minute.
But Blackstenius levelled five minutes later, just as the Germans looked to be on top, when she was given a baffling amount of space to stride through onto Kosovare Asllani's pass and drill the equaliser into the bottom corner.
From that point onwards Sweden were in complete control of the game and Holmberg gave them a deserved lead in the 25th minute when she weaved her way past Klara Buehl and Sarai Linder.
Trying to recover, Linder slid in to stop Holmberg from shooting but instead booted the ball off her opponent and into the net.
And the game was up for Germany just after the half-hour following Wamser's acrobatic handball of Rolfo's shot in a desperate attempt to cover for wayward goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.
Rolfo stroked home the resulting spot-kick and the match was as good as over with nearly an hour left to play.
Sweden slowed down in the second half, safe in the knowledge that Germany would have to score three times to snatch first place, and Hurtig completed the rout with 10 minutes remaining by tapping home Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's low cross. — AFP

Italy join Spain in Women's Euro quarters

Published on: Sunday, July 13, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 13, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Portugal's forward Ana Capeta (centre) and Belgium midfielder Mariam Toloba (tight) battle for a loose ball at the Stade de Tourbillon in Sion. Portugal's tournament ended with a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Belgium. BERN: Italy reached the quarter-finals of Women's Euro 2025 on Friday despite losing 3-1 to Group B winners Spain, the Azzurre finishing ahead of rivals Portugal whose tournament ended with a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Belgium. Athenea, Patri Guijarro and Esther Gonzalez scored the goals in Bern for Spain who finished the group stage on a perfect nine points, five ahead of second-placed Italy who will face Norway in the last eight on Wednesday. 'We had one key objective and that was to get through,' said Andrea Soncin who has taken Italy to the last eight of the women's Euros for the first time since 2013. 'We can still develop and there is a gap between us and Spain, but you saw that with good organisation we can compete. 'Obviously they have really great players who regardless of how organised you are can mess everything up for you, but we're very happy to have qualified.' Spain meanwhile will take on hosts Switzerland in a week's time as they aim to follow up their World Cup win with a first-ever Euros triumph. Montse Tome's team scored 14 times in three group matches, just four fewer goals they scored in Australia and New Zealand two years ago. 'We will make the most of the time, adapt so that the players have time to rest physically and mentally, and also have some fun,' said Tome. 'I hope we manage to keep doing what we are doing because we won three games from three, and it's the first time Spain have done this.' Italy, who took the lead through Elisabetta Oliviero in the 10th minute, ended the group stage one point ahead of third-placed Belgium who snatched a last-gasp win in Sion through Janice Cayman. Belgium were already eliminated before kick-off and only Portugal had a chance of overtaking Italy heading into the final round of Group B fixtures. But Soncin's Italy started the game knowing that a defeat would have likely been enough for a spot in the quarters even if Portugal beat Belgium due to the significant goal difference gap between the two teams. Three points separated Italy and Portugal at kick-off and Italian fans were able to relax when Tessa Wullaert stuck out her left leg to guide home Jill Janssens' low cross and put Belgium ahead in the third minute. Shortly afterwards Elena Linari thumped a header against the crossbar from Manuela Giugliano's corner, and then Oliviero gave Italy a shock lead by pouncing on a loose ball in the penalty area after some poor defending from Spain. But Spain soon began to assert their dominance and four minutes later Athenea brought them level with a wonderful goal, dribbling towards the edge of the area before exchanging passes with Alexia Putellas and curling home a superb finish. The Spanish continued to have the lion's share of possession but Italy were dangerous on the break, with Martina Piemonte, up front in place of Cristiana Girelli, shanked wide when clean through on goal. And Barbara Bonansea headed over Sofia Cantore's cross two minutes before the break as Italy pushed ot retake the lead. But Spain were deservedly in front three minutes after the break through Patri whose sliced first-time finish crept past Italy goalkeeper Laura Giulinani. Spain poured forward and added a third in stoppage time through Esther Gonzalez. But it mattered little by that point as even though Telma Encarnacao levelled late for Portugal, Cayman lashed home a loose ball in the 96th minute to give Belgium a thrilling win after they had two goals chalked off by VAR. Italy's players jumped and hugged once Belgium's success was confirmed, before basking in the applause of their travelling support. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Poland Beat Denmark 3-2 for First Euro Women's Win

POLAND recorded their first victory at a major women's tournament with a 3-2 win over Denmark on Saturday that saw them depart Euro 2025 on a high note. With both teams already eliminated, the result meant Poland came third in Group C at their debut Euros, and Denmark fourth. Natalia Padilla-Bidas made history and had Polish fans on their feet with her 12th-minute goal, the team's first in a major tournament, when a loose ball fell at her feet and she fired home. Ewa Pajor, Poland's all-time leading goalscorer, doubled the lead eight minutes later when she intercepted the ball in the midfield, laid it out to Padilla-Bidas then charged to the back post to head it in. Denmark's Janni Thomsen pulled one back in the 59th minute but Poland restored their two-goal lead when substitute Martyna Wiankowska struck from the edge of the box, firing the ball in off the bar. Denmark, runners-up at Euro 2017, replied in the 83rd minute when Signe Bruun headed in Katrine Veje's pinpoint cross. After the final whistle, the joyous Poland players tossed player of the match Padilla-Bidas in the air and celebrated with their supporters. 'It was a fantastic match,' Poland coach Nina Patalon said. 'We waited a long time for it. We wanted to score that one goal, and we scored three. Today I am so proud of my girls and just so, so happy.' Sweden finished top of Group C with their 4-1 win over Germany, who came second- REUTERS
