Tigress roar with pride despite Asian Cup exit
PETALING JAYA: The national women's football team can hold their heads high despite falling short of a ticket to the 2026 Asian Cup.
The Malayan Tigress, ranked No. 102 in the world, were denied the slot after falling 0-6 to world No. 9 North Korea on Saturday in their final Group H match in Tajikistan.
Head coach Joel Cornelli knew their opponents would be formidable, after all the North Koreans scored 10 goals in both their group stage matches against Palestine and Tajikistan.
Malaysia meanwhile had won their first two group stage matches with 1-0 wins against Palestine and hosts Tajikistan.
Malaysia finished second in the group, with only group winners North Korea advancing to the Asian Cup next year.
Despite the loss, the Brazilian coach had only praise for his team in their first international outing.
'I'm very proud of my team. In the first two matches, we played against teams at our level,' he said.
'North Korea were at a different level. They had better speed, more experience and were skilful. More than that, they were ready,' he said.
Cornelli, who joined the women's team in May, said the squad are showing great promise, and with time, would be able to reach greater heights.
'The team have been training for only two months before we competed. And it's my first tournament with them,' he said.
'I'm proud of what we have achieved here, and I'm sure that with time and hard work, we can improve and achieve better result in the next competition,' he said.
Malaysia's ranking are expected to break into the top 100 after their campaign in Tajikistan, a step in the right direction towards the highest ever of world No. 63 in 2003.

Soccer-Botafogo appoint Davide Ancelotti as manager
Soccer Football - LaLiga - Real Madrid v Almeria - Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain - April 29, 2023 Real Madrid assistant coach Davide Ancelotti before the match REUTERS/Isabel Infantes (Reuters) -Botafogo have appointed Davide Ancelotti, the son of Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti, as their new manager, the Brazilian club announced on Tuesday. The 35-year-old Ancelotti, who served as an assistant to his father at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton and most recently Real Madrid, has signed a one-year contract with Botafogo. Ancelotti left Real at the end of last season along with his father. Botafogo sacked manager Renato Paiva last week following their Club World Cup exit, despite Paiva guiding the side to a win over Champions League winners Paris St Germain earlier in the competition. Paiva's team went out at the last-16 stage with a 1-0 loss after extra time to fellow Brazilian club Palmeiras, and the manager, after four months in the role, was shocked by the club's decision. Now, the national women's football team want foreign-based players too
KUALA LUMPUR: It seems not only the national men's football team are getting foreign-born players, their women's counterparts want to do the same too. Theree foreign-based players are expected to join the Malayan Tigress for the 2026 Under-20 Asian Cup qualifiers. FAM women's football committee chairman Datuk Suraya Yaacob revealed that the "foreign trio" will join the national team for the Asian qualifiers in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 6-10. She said the recent Constitutional (Amendment) Act 2024, which allows children born abroad to Malaysian mothers and non-citizen fathers to automatically receive Malaysian citizenship, will help expand the national talent pool. Suraya said the recent success of the national men's team — who included several foreign-based players — has sparked interest from overseas-based women's footballers. "The citizenship amendment widened the talent pool for us, and we are grateful to the government. We will be getting three foreign-based players to join our national Under-20 team for the Asian Cup qualifiers," said Suraya. "We are open to foreign-based players, but they still need to be assessed before representing our national teams. We've received a lot of applications from players abroad, including from the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. "These foreign-based players are interested in playing for Malaysia after seeing the progress made by the men's team. Now that they can represent Malaysia despite being based abroad, it also opens up more opportunities for their football careers." The Malayan Tigress bowed out of the 2026 women's Asian Cup qualifiers last week. They eked out 1-0 wins over Palestine and hosts Tajikistan, but suffered a 6-0 defeat to Group H champions North Korea.

JDT register second win in Spain
KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) goal machine Bergson Da Silva proved his scoring prowess again by netting the winner in the 1-0 triumph over Spanish club Costa City in their pre-season tour yesterday. The goal from the Brazilian forward in the 68th minute was enough to secure a second consecutive win for the Southern Tigers, who are in a pre-season tour in Spain. The clash, held at Estadi Olimpic Camilo Cano, served as a testing ground for Xisco Munoz's men to gauge their strength after previously thrashing Real Murcia Imperial 4-0. Bergson also got his name on the scoresheet against Real Marcia, bringing his total to two goals so far in the team's pre-season in Spain. This victory is a boost for the 11-time consecutive Super League champions ahead of their next match against Cardiff City on Thursday. JDT will face two more Spanish clubs, Levante UD on July 12 and Valencia Mestalla on July 14, both expected to be held at venues around Alicante. Their pre-season continues with tougher challenges as JDT are slated to face three clubs from the Arab region - Al Rayyan SC (July 16) and Al Arabi SC (July 19) from Qatar, as well as Riyadh FC from Saudi Arabia on July 21. JDT's new coach, Xisco Munoz, is expected to give the team's new players opportunities to adapt to his playing style. This pre-season tour is an important platform for JDT to build momentum ahead of the M-League, AFC Champions League (ACLE), and the Asean Club Championship for the 2025-2026 season. With new players like Jairo Da Silva, Hector Hevel, and Antonio Glauder gelling well, the Southern Tigers fans surely have high hopes of seeing their team continue to dominate domestically, and shine on the Asian stage.
