Gavin Newsom may call special election to redraw California congressional maps
Donald Trump is pushing Texas and other Republican-dominated states to carry out mid-decade redistricting that will favor the GOP and potentially stop Democrats from retaking control of the House in next year's midterm elections. Governors in Democratic-led states have responded by warning they will move to redo their own maps if Texas goes ahead with its plans, which could create an additional five Republican-leaning districts.
California is viewed as the best opportunity for Democrats to pick up seats through gerrymandering, but voters will first have to approve changes to an independent redistricting commission that was given the power to draw congressional districts in 2010.
Speaking at a Thursday press conference, Newsom said 'a special election would be called, likely to be the first week of November' to approve the changes.
'We will go to the people of this state in a transparent way and ask them to consider the new circumstances, to consider these new realities,' the governor added.
The party out of power typically regains control of the House in a president's first midterm election, as the Republicans did under Joe Biden in 2022 and Barack Obama in 2010, and Democrats did during Trump's first term in 2018.
Newsom argued that another two years of unified Republican control of Congress would be especially harmful for California, noting that Los Angeles residents were still waiting for lawmakers to approve aid from the wildfires that ravaged the region earlier this year.
'They're doing a midterm rejection of objectivity and independence, a act that we could criticize from the sideline, or an act that we can respond to in kind – fight fire with fire,' Newsom said.
While Republicans could gain the most seats by redrawing Texas's maps, Ohio, another red state, must also redraw its maps before next year's election, and there's talk of redistricting to the GOP's advantage in Missouri and Indiana.
Democrats are seen as having a more difficult path to improving their odds of winning the House majority through redistricting, often due to their states' embrace of independent commissions intended to draw fair congressional amps.
Voters created the California Citizens Redistricting Commission in 2008 to draw its legislative maps, and in 2010 expanded its powers to congressional districts. Newsom said, 'we're not here to eliminate the commission' but rather to respond to what he described as 'the rigging of the system by the president of the United States.
'And it won't just happen in Texas. I imagine he's making similar calls all across this country. It's a big deal. I don't think it gets much bigger,' Newsom said.

Jeffrey Epstein and Donald Trump 's former attorney Alan Dershowitz was threatened with arrest after getting into a spat with a pierogi vendor on Martha's Vineyard. Dershowitz was at the West Tisbury Farmers Market on Wednesday when he claims Good Pierogi declined to sell to him because of his 'politics'. Video of the aftermath showed a police officer threatening to arrest the lawyer for trespassing unless he left the area. 'I've been going here for 53 this farmer's market. I have never been refused service,' he added. The two went back and forth for several minutes arguing about the law until the officer said Dershowitz was 'causing a disturbance'. 'I had four people come up to me and say that the gentleman with the blue shirt is causing a disturbance,' the officer said. 'I have multiple reports—' 'But they're wrong,' Dershowitz interrupted. 'I'm not causing a disturbance.' Dershowitz then said he wanted to stay at least 20 feet away from the pierogi stand and encourage people not to patronize them. 'If you do that on the premises you will be asked to leave because you're disrupting the business,' the officer said. Dershowitz tried to insist that he knew the law better than the officer, but the interaction wound down once the officer said he would arrest Dershowitz for trespassing if he stayed at the farmer's market. After some more arguing, Dershowitz agreed to leave. Krem Miskevich is the owner and operator Good Pierogi. Miskevich, who was born in Warsaw, Poland, also runs a catering business on Martha's Vineyard. Dershowitz told Daily Mail that Miskevich was the one who declined to sell him the six pierogi he asked for. 'And he said "no,"' Dershowitz claimed. 'I said "oh, you've run out of pierogi? Too bad." [The vendor allegedly said] "no no no, we have plenty of pierogi. I just won't sell them to you".' Dershowitz said he asked why and Miskevich allegedly replied, 'I won't sell them to you because I don't approve of your politics. I don't approve of who you've represented. I don't approve of who you support.' In a post on X, Dershowitz declared that he would be 'suing' and called the Good Pierogi a 'bigoted vendor'. Daily Mail approached Good Pierogi and Miskevich for comment. 'The clear implication was that he opposed me because I defended Donald Trump on the floor of the Senate,' Dershowitz said. Dershowitz was one of the lawyers who defended Trump in his first impeachment trial in 2020. He was also part of the 'Dream Team' that convinced a jury to acquit O.J. Simpson in his 1995 murder trial. His most controversial past client though was unquestionably Epstein, whom he represented in 2008 when the financier was first formally accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls. With the representation of Dershowitz and others, Epstein secured what many have called a lenient plea deal from the Miami US Attorney's Office that led to him only serving 13 months jail. Dershowitz didn't mention Epstein as a reason the pierogi vendor could have turned on him, however, he did claim that the vendor looked at him funny during an earlier visit when he was wearing a T-shirt that said, 'Proud American Zionist'. 'It became evident to me that he opposed my being a Zionist, my support for Israel,' he said. Dershowitz said he informed an official with the farmer's market that he would take 'legal action' against it 'to make sure that they only have booths by people who will sell to everybody, that they don't allow people to have booths on this quasi-public property that discriminate on the basis of race or religion or gender or politics'. He told Daily Mail that he isn't going to have to sue the farmer's market because management told him 'they're probably going to change their bylaws'. 'I don't have to sue. I've won,' he added. Ethan Buchanan-Valenti, the manager of the farmer's market, previously told the Vineyard Gazette that he is in the process of reviewing the bylaws, 'to make sure everyone at the market is always being respected and their rights protected'. A spokesman for the West Tisbury Police Department confirmed to Daily Mail that Dershowitz showed up to Saturday's farmer's market. 'He came by earlier today,' the spokesman said. 'There was no incident he caused. He was not disorderly.' The spokesman added that the Good Pierogi stand was not at the market today, as it usually only makes an appearance on Wednesdays. Pictures of Donald Trump's new redesign of the White House 's historic rose garden are in – and social media users are not impressed. Official pictures of the completed refurb project emerged Saturday. The colorful and meticulously maintained green space has now been paved over with white concrete, topped with several items of garden furniture. 'Trump turned Jackie Kennedy 's Rose Garden into a parking lot. Sad day for history and nature,' wrote one user on X, reacting to the images. 'Looks awful. Devoid of life. Just more concrete in the concrete jungle. Could have at least interlaid brick or some sort of designed pattern,' added another.
