Matariki event cancelled; trust cites competition from light show
A large community Matariki event at Stadium Southland has been cancelled, its backers saying it is too much of a risk to go ahead as a competing show is taking place a few days beforehand.
The Tūturu Charitable Trust announced yesterday it had reluctantly decided its Matariki festival would not take place next month.
It had been scheduled to be on June 20 and 21.
The trust said in a social media post a newly scheduled light show in Invercargill was set to run across the two weekends before the trust's Matariki event.
"Sadly, the scale, timing and ticketed nature of that event makes it too challenging for us to continue without confidence in strong community turnout."
The trust said it was an incredibly difficult decision to make and one it had not taken lightly.
About 8000 people attended the first day of the inaugural festival last year and the trust had been looking forward to the event this year. But it would not now happen.
A bullfrog was part of the Illuminate Light and Sound Experience.
Illuminate Light and Sound Experience has chosen Invercargill to begin its South Island tour and will showcase hundreds of light and sound installations at Queens Park from early June.
Failing to get approval from the Dunedin City Council led to the decision to choose Invercargill instead, Illuminate Light and Sound Experience creative director and co-owner Philip Anderson said.
The Illuminate show would be at Queens Park, starting on June 6 and going through to June 15.
The company said the decision to go to Invercargill was also motivated by a desire to stage the show in centres often left off shows' tour itineraries.
The show is also going to Nelson, Timaru and Christchurch.
The trust said it was sorry to let down all the schools, vendors, artists and groups who had already started preparing for the cancelled event.

Unveiled by the Dunedin City Council yesterday, the portrait is the work of Port Chalmers artist Chris Schmelz, who specialises in photography and film. It was taken in front of sculpture Ko to Tūhono in the Octagon. In a statement, Mr Hawkins said when it came to choosing a setting, "there was a shortlist of one". "The arrival of Ko to Tūhono in the Octagon was a special moment during my time as mayor," he said. "It was the first public art the city had commissioned in well over a decade, and it faces back towards Ōtākou — speaking to the growing strength of the relationship between council and mana whenua in recent years. "I'm proud of council's efforts under my leadership to build a brighter future for Ōtepoti Dunedin and a more people-friendly CBD, and Ko to Tūhono is a potent symbol of that mahi." Mr Hawkins was also pleased his photograph has been finished using a caffenol process, meaning — in a final nod to the rigours of public life — it had developed in a solution of caffeine. "I couldn't think of a better way to finish it off than with one last mug of filter coffee." Mr Hawkins, previously a two-term councillor, was mayor from 2019 until 2022. In 2023, the council voted to replace oil portraiture with photographs to document its elected leaders; Mr Hawkins' was the first official photographic portrait to be taken of a former mayor.

Event co-ordination plan to capitalise on stadium: council
Forsyth Barr Stadium. PHOTO: ODT FILES A new plan to co-ordinate events across Dunedin will capitalise on the city's stadium, councillors say. At Wednesday's Dunedin City Council meeting, councillors adopted the Dunedin Festivals and Events Plan 2025 and associated implementation plans. The plans aimed to boost Dunedin's profile as "event-ready" with a city-wide, collaborative approach. In June, the council approved $4.4 million to support the implementation plans over the next four years, as part of the long-term plan. Cr Andrew Whiley said Dunedin was a great event destination, but "we just haven't been telling that story". The plan was an "opportunity for great events in Dunedin that can bring a range of diverse audiences and products to town", he said. Forsyth Barr Stadium was a "great asset" which should be celebrated and, combined with the festival and events plan, "we do have a very strong future for our city", Cr Whiley said. Cr Jim O'Malley said the stadium was a "$300m" asset that needed support from transport infrastructure to attract touring acts. "Whenever [Dunedin Airport] is asked about its capacity to take heavy freight planes, it says 'we're not going to bother doing this for the sake of one plane a year'. "We need to consider the investment in that runway capability against the investment we have made and all infrastructure that supports our particularly large entertainment investments. "If we do not upgrade the runway at Dunedin Airport to be able to take heavy cargo planes, kiss goodbye any more Ed Sheeran concerts." Mayor Jules Radich said the plan was significant for the future of entertainment in Dunedin — "in particular for the future of the stadium". Councillors also agreed, with little discussion, the approved budget for a "planned major event" be altered following a date change. Instead of budgeting for the "previously discussed" event in 2026 and 2028, the budget had been adjusted to 2027 and 2029.

Photo: Bob Smith A photo of a Blue Mountain College head boy doing kapa haka during last year's Matariki celebrations has been chosen as part of an international photography competition. Bob Smith's photograph of Boston George Setefano (Ngāti Porou) has been chosen, alongside 80 other images from New Zealand, for the Four Nations Photographic Challenge. The black-and-white photograph was taken in Waimumu in 2024, and Mr Smith said he was beyond surprised to have been selected. "I couldn't believe my eyes when the announcement came out," he said. The life member of the Gore Camera Club said he had entered in previous years, but never heard anything back. "Eyer in with the pretty top photographers in the country," he said. Glenda Rees, also from Gore, has a shot selected as well. Blue Mountain teacher Arrhae Gawky Eales, who runs the kapa haka group Boston is the CAI (leader) of, said it was a privilege to see this photo of him. "I think I could write a book on this young man," she said. "Boston has helped lead the way for young Māori to be proud to be Māori." The cultural group is called Te Atka Kapa Haka Abhor, and is part of Te Atka Māori Charitable Trust. Mr Smith said the photos are sent to an independent association to be judged and the winners will be announced in September. The competition includes photographers from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Canada, and the Photographic Society of New Zealand is this year's host.
