Jagannath temple draws crowds to Digha, hotel bookings go up by 20%
Hoteliers in West Bengal's Digha have experienced a 20 per cent surge in occupancy as travellers in large numbers are thronging the seaside town since the opening of the Jagannath temple in April, an official said on Friday.
Around 90 per cent of the boarders are coming for a two-day stay in hotels to visit the town and offer puja to Lord Jagannath in the new temple, Digha Hoteliers Association joint secretary Bipradas Chatterjee told PTI.
"Since the opening of the Jagannath temple in April this year, the room occupancy in all hotels has increased by 20 per cent on average. Most of the visitors now arrive in Digha for a short stay, and it is too early to say if this surge in occupancy will sustain in the long run or not," he added.
Lakhs of devotees of Lord Jagannath have already arrived in the coastal town from across the state and elsewhere.
Chatterjee said the number of visitors to around 115 hotels in Old Digha and 600 in New Digha, Sankarpur and Tajpur has been over 20 lakh since April 30, when the temple was inaugurated.

"We need to assess the situation after six months to see whether the opening of the temple has resulted in a sustainable boom in the tourism sector in Digha or it is a short-term initial effect," he added.
The senior hotelier said the road before the temple needs to be widened.
"There has to be a proper mechanism to cope with the rush of people on certain occasions like Rath Yatra and Snan Yatra. This time, there is high security, but this has to be in place throughout the year," another association member said.
Chatterjee said the state-run Digha Shankarpur Development Authority has been approached by the association to sort out several issues to make the seaside town an important destination for travellers.
Asked about an abnormal hike in room tariffs since the temple came up, he said, "Some unscrupulous hoteliers resorted to unfair practices, but we have taken strong action against them."
The hotel owners have been asked to put on display board their room tariffs for transparency and fairness, he added. PTI

Stood near site of stampede, unaware of tragedy that had unfolded
Puri: Joining thousands from Bhubaneswar and Cuttack who made it a yearly routine to visit Puri during Rath Yatra to behold the sibling deities on the chariots, me and my friends started from Bhubaneswar at 3am on Sunday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now We picked the early hours to avoid the midnight rush and have a peaceful darshan of the deities. Strangely, National Highway 316, connecting Bhubaneswar to Puri, and usually buzzing with devotees during Rath Yatra, had fewer vehicles. It felt unusual, but I guessed that devotees from the twin cities might have started on Saturday night and returned in the early hours of Sunday. The weather was pleasant as we took the left overbridge towards Konark from Malatipatapur and entered Puri through Balighat Chowk. By 4:45am, we had reached Puri Bus Stand, close to Gundicha Temple. People were either going towards the chariots or walking back after having a darshan. Many were carrying children in their arms, some of whom had dozed off. There was no sign of panic or distress. Everything seemed calm and normal. Parking the vehicle at Puri Bus Stand, I caught the first glimpse of the towering chariots. With a heart full of emotion, I walked closer. There was not much of a crowd. Along the way, I noticed a few devotees sitting quietly on the ground, while others were still asleep on plastic sheets on the cement floor. What stood out was scattered footwear — chappals and sandals of all shapes and sizes — abandoned in front of the chariots. It struck me as odd, but not alarming. I attempted to jump over a bamboo barricade to take a shortcut to the front side of the chariots. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A visibly agitated police officer shouted at us, "Can't you walk around? Why are you jumping barricades?" I took this as a sign of irritation and thought he must be tired. I spent around 20 minutes in front of the chariots, soaking in the divine darshan of the deities. Standing hardly 50 metres away from the Lord of the Universe, I had no idea that just 15-20 minutes before I arrived, a stampede had occurred nearby, between 4:20 and 4:30am, killing three people and injuring several others. As I made my way back, the scattered chappals again caught my attention. I casually asked my friend why so many were lying around. "Maybe people had just left them behind," she said. Just then, an ambulance passed us with its siren blaring. We paused, sensing a medical emergency, but still didn't grasp the severity of what had happened. Only after I came out from Puri did I get a notification on my phone that a tragic stampede had happened minutes before our arrival. It sent a chill down the spine. I was lucky and blessed. I cannot thank the Lord enough for His blessings.

Police in Jammu intensifies security ahead of Amarnath Yatra
'In view of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, the Jammu Police has significantly bolstered the security arrangements by establishing joint nakas (checkpoints) at multiple strategic locations across the district,' a police spokesperson said. The 38-day annual pilgrimage is scheduled to start on July 3 from the twin routes — the traditional 48-kilometre Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter but steeper 14-kilometre Baltal route in Ganderbal district — leading to the 3,880-metre-high Amarnath cave shrine. The first batch of pilgrims will leave for Kashmir from the Jammu-based Bhagwati Nagar base camp a day before the start of the yatra. Jammu, Jun 29 (PTI) Police set up a number of checkpoints on Sunday to bolster security arrangements in Jammu district and carry out daily anti-sabotage checks ahead of the Amarnath Yatra, which is scheduled to start from July 3. He said the checkpoints have been set up in coordination with paramilitary forces to ensure a seamless and secure pilgrimage experience. The checkpoints will be operational round the clock in high-sensitivity and high-mobility zones, including on national highways, city peripheries and routes leading to the Bhagwati Nagar base camp, the spokesperson said. Personnel from police, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and other agencies have been deployed for intensive frisking, surveillance and verification operations. Senior police officers are personally monitoring the operations at the checkpoints to ensure alertness, professionalism and public convenience, the spokesperson said. 'The naka teams have been directed to maintain a balance between rigorous checking and respectful behaviour towards pilgrims and civilians,' he added. Special attention is being given to vehicle checking, identity verification and detection of suspicious movement, supported by technical inputs and facial recognition systems (FRS) at vulnerable and crowded locations, he said. 'Instructions have also been passed to conduct random checks at hotels, guesthouses and lodgement centres,' the spokesperson said. Police have urged citizens and pilgrims to cooperate with the naka teams, keep valid identity proofs and report any suspicious activity immediately. 'Public support remains crucial in maintaining peace and order during the holy yatra,' the spokesperson said. The initiative reflects the unwavering commitment of the Jammu Police to ensure a safe, secure and spiritually-fulfilling Amarnath Yatra for all devotees, he added. Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jammu, Joginder Singh, along with the group commander of the SPG and other senior police officers, conducted a comprehensive security review along the yatra route, from the traffic checkpost at Nagrota to Saloora along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. The high-level team inspected deployment points and interacted with officers deployed along the route, the spokesperson said. 'A detailed briefing session was held to appraise the officers of the current threat scenario and the standard operating procedures to be followed while performing duties,' he said. The officers were directed to conduct daily anti-sabotage checks, particularly in areas where expressway construction is underway, which have been identified as vulnerable zones, he said, adding, 'Emphasis was also laid on maintaining high alertness and ensuring coordinated efforts among all security agencies.' The SSP underlined the importance of inter-agency cooperation and a timely response to any situation, reiterating the administration's commitment to ensuring a safe and secure passage for all pilgrims.
