Ernie Els pulls out of The Open Championship
This is the second successive year that the South African legend will have a WD next to his name at The Open, but the first ever in which he has failed to compete for the Claret Jug when eligible.
Els, now 55, who still has the option of teeing it up until the age of 60, pulled out of the running due to a bad back at Royal Troon 12 months ago after carding an 11-over 82 in round one.
Announcing the news, the R&A did not share a reason for Els's withdrawal this year.
His replacement is South Korea's Si Woo Kim, who was first on the alternate list taken from last week's Official World Golf Ranking.
The 'Big Easy' twice lifted the Claret Jug during his illustrious career, in 2002 and 2012, first triumphing in a four-man playoff at Muirfield following a pair of US Open victories in the 1990s before repeating the achievement at Royal Lytham & St Annes a decade later.
Els missed the cut on his Open debut in 1989, but went on to play in every available edition of the championship between 1992 and 2023.
During that time, he managed 11 top-10s outside of his wins before failing to play the weekend for just the second time in 2010 on what was his 20th appearance.
Els found time to wish all those competing this week in Northern Ireland the best of luck, writing: 'Wishing all the contestants playing @theopen all the very best. There will still be no fewer than 11 South Africans in the 156-player field this week.
They are: Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Dean Burmester, Darren Fichardt, Thriston Lawrence, Dylan Naidoo, Bryan Newman (amateur), Shaun Norris, Louis Oosthuizen, Aldrich Potgieter, Daniel van Tonder and Justin Walters.

More pain in the pool for SA women's water polo side at Aquatics Championships
Another international tournament, another series of brutal defeats suffered by South Africa's women's water polo side. Playing at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, they were drawn in Group D alongside Spain, Great Britain and France. In their final group stage match, the South African men's side were humbled 28-4 by Italy (score by quarters: 6-1, 9-0, 8-1, 5-2). South Africa finished bottom of the group, scoring just 12 goals while conceding 79 for an average loss of 26-4. The South African men's side will now enter the 13th-16th place bracket where they will face Australia on Friday, 18 July at 09:00 (SA time). Should they lose that match – as is expected – they will face the loser of the clash between hosts Singapore and China to determine 15th and 16th places overall. Monyane embraces Kaizer Chiefs identity after Soweto switch

While on tour with Chiefs in The Netherlands for their pre-season training camp, Monyane was overwhelmed by the level of support shown during the side's five matches. In their final game, Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-1 to Dutch Eredivisie outfit FC Twente on Wednesday evening. Reflecting on the defeat, Monyane said: 'We conceded twice in critical phases of the game.' Though disappointed, he remained optimistic about the team's growth. 'That was tough. We worked so hard to get back into the game, and then we conceded a goal so late.' With a philosophical tone, he added: 'You never lose, you always learn.' Chiefs initially struggled against the aggressive, high-pressing approach adopted by FC Twente, who put early pressure on the South African side's defence. However, Amakhosi gradually found their rhythm, with Thabo Cele delivering a strong performance in midfield and Mfundo Vilakazi posing a constant threat on the flank. Vilakazi's lively showing included powerful shots on goal and clear intent to make an impact. Coach Nasreddine Nabi made a series of strategic substitutions at half-time, keeping only a handful of first-half players on the pitch. Continental Sports Academy hosts coaching course for technical directors in Vaal
EVATON.- Kenneth 'Conti' Kubheka hosted a coaching course for technical directors through his Continental Sports Academy at Wilberforce College on Tuesday. The course was attended by local and outside coaches to boost their coaching knowledge. Kubheka is one of the highly qualified coaches in South African football. He obtained some of his coaching qualifications in Holland, and this makes him a highly knowledgeable coach in this country. He also works part-time for SAFA as a coaching instructor, conducting coaching courses throughout the country. This former Bafana Bafana and U23 National Team coach is armed with coaching knowledge. Apart from national teams, some of the teams that he coached include Bush Bucks and Vaal Professionals. Unfortunately, both teams have since disappeared in South African football. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Kubheka said a technical director is very important in football. He said this course is to prepare technical directors and those who desire to become technical directors. This course is part of the coaching courses and football administrators Kubheka offered in partnership with the historical Wilberforce College. This course is the first of its kind to take place in the Vaal. 'As Continental Sports Academy, we aim to empower and educate coaches, players, and football administrators. We provide a few courses that will be helpful for everyone who is involved in football. I'm happy that coaches and players find these courses helpful.
