Aamir Khan was nervous about being called ‘tingu' but Javed Akhtar's advice saved him: ‘Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha were all tall men'
While making an appearance on Just Filmy Things' YouTube channel, the actor was asked about being called 'tingu (short)' in the trailer of his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par. Aamir recalled that back in the day, he was quite insecure about his height and shared, 'Amitabh Bachchan was at the top of the industry at that time, and then other male actors like Shatrughan Sinha and Vinod Khanna were all tall and strapping men. I was very nervous about whether a short actor like myself would be given any importance or not, but as it turned out, it was fine.'
Aamir said that after a while, he forgot all about his insecurity and shared how writer Javed Akhtar's statement helped him get over it. 'Javed Akhtar told me that 'a good sense of humour isn't only for fun and games, its real power comes to light when you are going through a difficult time.' He told me that a good sense of humour and the ability to laugh at oneself act like a shock absorber,' he shared.

Previously, in a chat with Nana Patekar on Zee Music Company's YouTube channel, he shared that he had an 'inferiority complex' about his height in his early days. 'I used to feel that what if people don't accept me because of my height. This was my fear. But later I realised that all of this does not matter at all. But at that time, some kind of insecurity creeps in,' he said.
Aamir Khan hasn't had a blockbuster hit since 2016's Dangal. He has appeared in films like Secret Superstar, Thugs of Hindostan and Laal Singh Chaddha since then.
Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par also features Genelia Deshmukh and debutants Naman Misra, Rishi Shahani, Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishnan Varma, Vedant Sharmaa, Rishabh Jain, Ashish Pendse, Samvit Desai, Simran Mangeshkar, and Aayush Bhansali. The film releases in theatres on June 20.

Aamir & Aamna on their bond: Having genuine friends is a big deal
Aamir Ali and Aamna Sharif's friendship isn't loud or flashy—it's the kind that runs deep, built over years of quiet loyalty and unwavering presence. Ask them about their first impressions, Aamna Sharif says: 'I'm very reserved—I don't even remember how we became friends. It must have just been a 'hello' many years ago.' Aamir adds, 'She's shy and reserved. People used to think she had an attitude, but I saw the real her. And after all this time, it just feels like family.' Aamir Ali and Aamna Shariff on their decade long friendship Their admiration for each other's work is evident, but it's the consistent support off-screen that makes their bond special. 'Every time I'm doing something new or I'm confused about something, the first call goes to Aamir. He's that one person whose advice I always count on.' Aamir adds, 'I've been Aamna's friend and fan since her TV days. She was huge then. I've always admired that we both prefer doing less work, but meaningful work—we're not hungry for just anything.' The 43-year-old actor says: 'While he's been the biggest support, it's also true that we are not running behind work just for the sake of it. When Aamir announces his new project I am keen to watch it as I know he aims at quality project just like me.' Ask them what friendship means to them in today's time, Aamna says, 'Having one or two genuine friends in the industry is a big deal. Especially during your lows more than your highs, because that's when you really need someone to stand by you. For me, that person is Aamir. He's honest, if he doesn't like something I've done, a character maybe, he'll just tell me, 'You could've done better,' and I really value that feedback of his.' Aamir adds, 'Be real and be there. In today's time everyone is caught up in their own lives. You being there for your friend KMC even without them voicing it out, makes a difference.' Seeing their busy schedules, the duo don't meet regularly but their connection remains intact. 'Even if we don't talk for one or two months, it's the same when we reconnect. We haven't met in almost ten months, but that doesn't matter. She (Aamna) knows I'm there for her, and I know she's there for me,' says Aamir. 'That silent support in friendship is what is the best. Our bond is not about calling each other every now and then,' says Aamna. Recalling their fondest moment together, the duo shares how little rituals—like their competitive gaming sessions are their favourite. Recalling the same, Aamna shares: 'There was a time we were playing UNO and whoever lost had to become a donkey. I had to make sure he (Aamir) lost. And when he did, I was the happiest!' Aamir admits, 'It's true, if ten people are playing, I don't care who wins or loses, but I have to beat her. That's the only thing that matters for both of us!' Reflecting on what initially surprised them about each other, Aamir says, 'When I first saw her, I thought she was just beautiful. But over time, I realised she's a lot of fun too—just with the people she's comfortable with. Amu is very particular about who she lets into her circle, and I'm one of the only few people who can make fun of her and get away with it,' says Aamir, adding, 'We don't intrude in each other's space, but we're always there if it really matters.' Aamna, in turn, says, 'He's a fun guy. And I used to think I'm boring, but with him, it's always a good time. No matter what time or what day it is, even if I call him after five months and say I need you, Aamir will leave everything and be there for me. I don't think I can ask for more from a friend.'

Kerala Rolls Out Draft Film Policy Aimed At Funding, Gender Equality And Global Reach
Last Updated: Kerala's draft film policy aims to formalise the industry, enhance global presence, and promote inclusivity. It includes financial mechanisms, gender equity, and tech adoption. In a significant step towards transforming its film sector, the Kerala government has released a comprehensive draft film policy aimed at formalising the industry, enhancing its global footprint, and promoting inclusivity. The policy was unveiled on Saturday during the ongoing two-day Malayalam Film Conclave in Thiruvananthapuram. Framed with a futuristic vision, the policy outlines strategic goals including industry recognition for film production and exhibition, improved financial mechanisms, gender equity, and the adoption of advanced technology. It also aspires to make Kerala a regional production hub while preserving the cultural legacy of Malayalam cinema. Declaring that film production will now be recognised as a formal industry, the draft underlines the benefits of transparency, financial clarity, and social accountability. 'The recognition of film production as an industry will bring multiple advantages, enhancing transparency and promoting social responsibility within the sector," the policy notes. One of the cornerstones of the policy is an inclusive financing framework. It proposes a general incentive scheme for Malayalam cinema, with targeted support for women and marginalised communities. Plans are also in place to establish a venture capital fund for film production, with the involvement of private players and provisions for crowdfunding, especially for films with strong social relevance. This fund will be managed by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation. To ensure Kerala remains competitive on the global stage, the policy encourages the production of films in other Indian and foreign languages within the state. A single-window film facilitation centre will also be launched to simplify permit procedures and attract more projects to the region. The policy highlights that India, producing over 2,000 films annually, remains the world's largest film-producing nation. Malayalam cinema ranks second after Hindi, with around 300 films produced each year. In 2023, Kerala contributed over ₹2,000 crore to the national box office, reflecting its significant role in India's cinematic economy. A new Film Development Council, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and co-chaired by Culture Minister Saji Cherian, is proposed as the apex body to guide implementation. The council will also include an industry representative as vice-chairperson. The draft has been circulated to stakeholders and will be deliberated further during the conclave, which concludes on Sunday. The government reiterated its commitment to consulting film bodies on matters such as fair wages, insurance, and working conditions, ensuring that reforms benefit every layer of the industry. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
