Katie Piper, 41, heartbreakingly reveals how emergency surgery forced her to give up desire to have a third child
The TV presenter, 41, is a mother to two daughters - Belle, 11, and Penelope, seven - and revealed she and her husband Richard Sutton tried for a third child.
She said spending a mother with jailed mums in New Orleans Parish Prison - while filming TV show Locked Up - made her want to try for a third baby, after hearing heartbreaking stories from prisoners who were missing their children.
She told The Mirror: 'It started to make me think, 'This is my last chance to have another baby, I'm going to be 40. And if I don't do it now, I never will.'
Shortly before her 40th birthday, Katie and Richard started trying to have another child before she had to undergo an emergency surgery on her eye.
Katie had to go under general anaesthetic for the operation on her left eye - which was damaged in a horrific acid attack in 2008, orchestrated by a man she briefly dated.
'I had to have a general anaesthetic and you can't be trying for a baby and also be having unexpected surgeries,' Katie explained.
'So that scuppered that and we had a break. We tried again, but it just didn't happen.'
Katie considered IVF, but after enduring over 250 operations since the 2008 acid attack, she couldn't face more hospital appointments or the emotional toll if it didn't work, so reluctantly gave up the dream of having a third child.
However, Katie still felt something was missing, so, Katie started volunteering at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, where she adopted an adorable puppy.
She began volunteering and dog walking while still trying for a baby, and the decision to get a dog came naturally.
She added that her friend Alison helped her to pick the right dog for her family – a female half cockapoo puppy called Sugar with a calm temperament.
Katie's life was changed forever when she was attacked with acid aged just 24 back in 2008 her ex-boyfriend Daniel Lynch and accomplice Stefan Sylvestre in 2008.
Katie, who had been dating Daniel for just two weeks, was brutally raped by the steroid-fuelled martial arts expert in a hotel room when she tried to leave their relationship in March that year.
He then obsessively stalked her before ordering then 19-year-old Stefan to throw sulphuric acid on her face, leaving her with severe burns and in need of 400 operations.
Daniel received a life sentence with a minimum term of 16 years after being convicted of rape, GBH and ABH at Wood Green Crown Court in 2009.
His co-conspirator, Stefan, who threw the acid at Katie, admitted GBH and was given a life sentence with a minimum term of six years.
He was released in 2018 but was recalled to prison for breaching his licence conditions. Police have since said they believe he has fled the country.
Despite her traumatic experience, Katie regularly volunteers in women's prisons and believes in the power of rehabilitation.
Locked Up In Louisiana, her latest TV show, follows her meeting women imprisoned or awaiting trial for murder.
It follows her previous documentary, Jailhouse Mums, which explored motherhood behind bars.
Katie noted that gun violence and violence against women are rampant, with many women facing 'shoot or be shot' situations.

Jamie Lee Curtis sobs over Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson's 'intimate' relationship
Jamie Lee Curtis has praised Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson's 'intimate' relationship and told people to 'leave them the f*** alone' if they have found love with each other Jamie Lee Curtis has emotionally commended the budding romance between Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson. The stars of The Naked Gun have sparked rumours of a love connection since meeting on set, and the Freakier Friday actress has urged the public to cease gossiping about the duo and instead rejoice if they've indeed found love together. In an emotional TikTok video shared by VT, she expressed: "With all due respect to pop culture, if love has found [its] way into that relationship - God bless them both - leave them the f*** alone. Let them like each other. "Both of them have had hardship, and they're both beautiful human beings - makes me cry." Curtis couldn't hold back tears as she continued: "If they actually have found an intimate love with each other, we should all go to bed tonight feeling better." It comes after the pair were spotted getting very touchy-feely in a flirty interview with Andy Cohen earlier this week. The Last Showgirl actress believes that her co-star and Liam - who tragically lost his wife Natasha Richardson in a skiing accident in 2009 - are both deserving of joy. She remarked: "She's a beautiful person. She was fantastic [in the movie], but she's a beautiful human being. "He also suffered an unimaginable loss so young, and has had a really hard go of it. So if, in fact, these people have hard launched, then wish them the best and leave them alone." Her heartfelt words follow after Liam's son Daniel also gave a nod to his father's new partnership. Daniel, 28, showed his support while attending the audience during the couple's appearance on 'Watch What Happens Live' over the past weekend. Host Andy Cohen expressed his support for the couple, saying: "The question that I'm not asking the two of you tonight is what's going on between the two of you, but I do just want to say, as a very old friend of [Liam's], all of your friends are very much stanning this relationship, as the kids say." As Liam affectionately placed his hand on Pamela's shoulder and she warmly squeezed it, Andy turned to Daniel in the audience and asked: "Right Danny?". To which Daniel simply responded: "Yes." On Friday, August 1, Pamela took to Instagram to post a series of snaps with Liam, celebrating the release of 'The Naked Gun' with the caption: "The Naked Gun is finally in theatres! Bring your friends, family, lovers... whoever... just go and have a laugh... it's good for you!"I'll see you there [white heart and popcorn emojis] (sic)". Daniel showed his approval by commenting with a mix of emojis including raised hands, flames, and white hearts. Joely Richardson, Natasha's sister, also left a comment filled with red heart emojis under the post. Liam, father to Micheal, 30, and Daniel with his late wife, has openly declared his deep affection for Pamela, praising her in an interview with People magazine. He professed: "With Pamela, first off, I'm madly in love with her. She's just terrific to work with. I can't compliment her enough, I'll be honest with you. No huge ego. She just comes in to do the work. She's funny and so easy to work with."

Johnny Vegas admits he had a 'meltdown' amid his ADHD battle as he reflects on the 'most difficult part of his life' and what saved him
has admitted he had a 'meltdown' amid his ADHD battle as the comedian, 54, opened up about the most challenging year of his life. The actor and comedian's upcoming two-part Channel 4 show sees him create a piece of art for his hometown, St. Helens, in Merseyside. However during filming, the star was rocked by a shock health diagnosis as he discovered he had ADHD. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioural condition defined by inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. And now Johnny has opened up about the 'most difficult time of his life' and how his art saved him. He told The Mirror: 'I went into meltdown, I couldn't function. It seemed insurmountable. I had to get professional help. This has been the most difficult part of my life. But the art saved me.' Explaining how the noise in his brain stops when he is working on his art he continued: 'With ADHD, when everyone else is going to bed, my brain goes, "It's just you and me now". 'It lives to work against you. But the one time the white noise stops, the one time I can focus, the one time that having ADHD is good for you is art. The world makes sense when I am working on my art.' Johnny took a year off work amid his health battle before he returned for his debut art exhibition. His new documentary, titled Johnny Vegas: Art, ADHD and Me, will see the star embark on a 'creative endeavour' that ends up being a 'journey of self-discovery'. The documentary delves into 'an honest and heartfelt conversation about mental health and understanding yourself'. Previously speaking about the new show, Johnny revealed he was once a 'dedicated wannabe ceramicist'. He said: 'I used to sit at a potter's wheel on stage. People thought it was a gimmick but I actually started out as a dedicated wannabe ceramicist. 'Art was my educational saviour. Over years of witnessing what felt like an ongoing decline in educational commitment to the very same arts I felt it was time I threw my hat back into the ring. 'To kickstart a debate about culture in general, whilst giving something of a visual a symbol of gratitude back to my honestly beloved town.' Channel 4 boss Shaminder Nahal revealed the documentary had been filmed over years and added: 'This series brings to life the power of art for everyone – how it can soothe, help, energise and inspire. 'Beautifully filmed over several years by Eddie Stafford, the series showcases Johnny's unique humour, heart and passion – uncovering the intricacies and demands of artistic process along the way. 'It's an enlightening, eye-opening and emotional journey.' WHAT IS ADHD? Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioural condition defined by inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. It affects around five per cent of children in the US. Some 3.6 per cent of boys and 0.85 per cent of girls suffer in the UK. Symptoms typically appear at an early age and become more noticeable as a child grows. These can also include: Constant fidgeting Poor concentration Excessive movement or talking Acting without thinking Inability to deal with stress Little or no sense of danger Careless mistakes Mood swings Forgetfulness Difficulty organising tasks Continually starting new tasks before finishing old ones Inability to listen or carry out instructions Most cases are diagnosed between six and 12 years old. Adults can also suffer, but there is less research into this. ADHD's exact cause is unclear but is thought to involve genetic mutations that affect a person's brain function and structure. Premature babies and those with epilepsy or brain damage are more at risk. ADHD is also linked to anxiety, depression, insomnia, Tourette's and epilepsy. There is no cure. A combination of medication and therapy is usually recommended to relieve symptoms and make day-to-day life easier.
