Dumb and Dumber fans only now noticing clever detail three decades after release

Fans of '90s hit comedy Dumb and Dumber are only now realising a clever detail from the movie, which is widely regarded among the funniest films of all time. Dumb and Dumber opened at number one at the box office and earned a whopping $247 million against a relatively small budget of €17 million. It is a standout film in the careers of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, who played the protagonists of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne respectively. While it's been 31 years since Dumb and Dumber first hit our screens, a clever detail in the movie has only recently surfaced on Reddit, leaving fans of the film in stitches as they remember their first experiences watching it, The Mirror reports. On Reddit's 'Movie Details' thread, one user highlighted a subtle joke that went over the heads of many viewers over the past three decades. A deleted scene from the movie had revealed the joke but it came as a surprise to most when it was pointed out. The Redditor pointed out: "In 'Dumb and Dumber,' Lloyd Christmas was in love with Mary Swanson. Had they gotten married and she'd taken his last name, she'd be named Mary Christmas. It's never mentioned in the movie." YardBarker further explained that this was not simply a coincidence, as evidenced by a deleted scene where Harry pieces together the connection, but ultimately, the filmmakers chose not to draw attention to the joke. When the deleted scene was shared on the Reddit thread, it received some criticism from users who failed to find it amusing. One commenter wrote: "Wow...I've seen a few deleted scenes and am glad they were deleted". Another user echoed this sentiment, stating: "I've seen an uncut version on TV a long time ago, and was like what the f*** is this? Over the top crude humour. It totally killed the innocent stupidity of the characters". One user joked, "So basically the sequel?" while another Reddit user poked fun, saying they act "like that doesn't exist". A fellow user chimed in, "Wise man. I still refuse to see it as well. In some alternate reality, there was a sequel that was true to the original and hilarious. That's what I tell myself anyway." The Farrelly brothers-led movie is considered one of the funniest of all time but it only holds a modest 67 per cent Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. Dumb and Dumber spawned an animated TV series, a 2003 prequel, and a 2014 sequel but it is the original that truly holds up among the greatest comedies of all time, with many reminiscing fondly of their first time watching. Many social media users have shared fond memories of the film, saying they were "obsessed" with it as a kid and had watched it so many times it was "burned into their brain," finding it "hilarious".

Brit boy, 6, 'detained on holiday island over £1.6m drug smuggling plot'

The six-year-old boy was reportedly detained along with his mum and five other British nationals at an airport in Mauritius over an alleged drug smuggling plot A six-year-old boy was among six British nationals detained abroad in a huge £1.6million drug-smuggling bust, according to reports. The group were stopped last Sunday at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), the main international airport in Mauritius, where customs officials allegedly discovered 161kg of cannabis hidden inside their suitcases. The total haul reportedly included 24 packages stashed in the youngster's bag, weighing 14kg. The boy's 35-year-old mum was meanwhile said to be carrying 29 packages, and her Romanian partner another 32 packages. Local officials are said to have estimated the total amount would be equivalent to £1.6million on the local drugs market. Five British women and one man, one Romanian, and a child were all reportedly detained at the scene, with the adults later appearing at a court in Mahebourg to be provisionally charged with drug offences. The adults remain in detention after police requested for them not to be given conditional release, according to Mauritian newspaper Defi Media. Authorities contacted the British High Commission regarding the child's welfare after taking in him and his mother. Reports back in the UK said the boy was flown home on Wednesday, with his dad coming to the airport to collect him. His age has been reported as either six or seven years old. The Mirror has approached the Foreign Office for comment. A spokesperson told The Sun: "We are supporting several British nationals who are detained in Mauritius and are in contact with the local authorities." Customs officers and police are said to have kept a keen eye on the group of passengers from the moment they disembarked from British Airways flight BA 2065 on Sunday, which had arrived from London Gatwick Airport. Multiple police bloodhounds had been stationed in the airport that day as part of an anti-trafficking operation. After being stopped, all of the group's checked baggage, including the child's, was examined with an X-ray scanner, allegedly revealing the presence of the drugs. Authorities in Mauritius described the use of a child for drug trafficking as "inhumane". They added that Apple AirTags were said to have been found with the parcels of drugs, suggesting an organised smuggling operation.

Emmerdale star teases villain's return as he confirms new Lewis twists

Emmerdale newcomer Bradley Riches, who plays Lewis Barton on the ITV soap, has teased new twists ahead for the brother of Ross Barton, while calling for the comeback of a villain One Emmerdale newcomer is hoping one of the show's biggest villains will make an epic return to the ITV soap, while teasing new twists ahead. Bradley Riches spoke exclusively to The Mirror about what lies ahead for his character Lewis Barton. It seems fans will be seeing a lot more of Ross Barton's secret brother, with it teased he'll be very present up on Moira DIngle's farm. ‌ Amid Lewis falling out with Ross over their secret weed growing schemes and the truth about his mother Emma Barton's death, Bradley has hinted the drama will die down a little where Moira is concerned. Moira feared the worst when Lewis worked out she'd killed Emma. ‌ But Lewis will move on it seems, forming a bond with Ross' aunt and staying close to Ross despite some hiccups along the way thanks to Mackenzie Boyd, and new villain Ray. But Bradley is hoping we might see another big villain head back to the show, as it would be a rather big twist for his ongoing plot. Emmerdale stars warn 'lots of danger' ahead as 'scary' new villain Ray debuts Bradley told us that Lewis was going to let things slide with Moira, forgiving her for Emma's death. Moira actress Natalie J Robb then confessed: "She will mother him," as Bradley told us: "He can't stay angry at these faces," referring to Ross and Moira. He added: "I think they are both quite similar and know what they want. They will see eye to eye soon. But I say bring back Emma... maybe she never fell off that bridge." Ross actor Mike Parr added: "It is a shame she can't come back but you never know actually. It is a soap after all. Maybe she floated, she got back on her broom and flew off." It seems the bond between Lewis and Ross will grow though, with Mike telling us: "I think it would be really nice because we have such a nice offscreen relationship. It's fun and it will be nice if that comes through onscreen too. ‌ "It's hard to make the comedy fun and push happy storylines that last longer than two episodes amid all the illness and death. It would be nice to make that work and pump some happiness into the show." Mike then questioned: "But do they become sworn enemies or can they grow closer? We will just have to wait and see but there's more stuff ahead." Bradley also teased more comedy ahead, adding: "He's got a couple of one liners coming up which is exciting. And he's introduced to new people in the village as well." As we asked about him getting a job within the village, both Bradley and Natalie let slip Lewis would be very much staying on the farm, just like the rest of the Bartons. Natalie confessed: "Maybe somewhere else..." as Bradley added: "He will get a job, he's a determined guy. He wants to get stuff done." Natalie added: "He will be getting a job," before pulling a face that told us all we needed to know.

Denise Welch shows glam Glasto accommodation ahead of son Tom's headline show

Loose Women presenter Denise Welch is looking forward to watching her son Matty Healy headline at Glastonbury and gave a sneak peek at her luxury accommodation Denise Welch is every bit the proud mother as she awaits son Matty Healy's Glastonbury headline. Matty and The 1975 are set to headline the Pyramid Stage from 10.15pm tonight and have 'pulled out all the stops' to ensure it is one to remember. And now his Loose Women presenter mum Denise has revealed her accommodation in the build-up to the honour. Taking to her Instagram Stories on Friday, she admitted she "can't quite believe it" as she shared a clip of Matty performing. Alongside a number of party emojis, she labelled the day: "Glastonbury Day." ‌ Denise, who shares Matty with ex-husband Tim Healy, then joked Matty's stepdad - Denise's current partner Lincoln Townley - was "preparing". She had earlier admitted she's not a fan of festivals - and had ruled out camping. She instead opted for a more comfortable nights rest off site. ‌ As she showed off their secluded setting in the fields, filled with sunshine and shrubbery, Denise then panned onto her man in a hot tub. Lincoln was then seen donning a wicker cowboy hat as he hanged his feet over the sides of the jacuzzi, which was bubbling away. He told her he was "loving Glastonbury" as he relaxed before she showed herself smiling as she waited her son's big night. Following their preparation, Denise then headed to the festival and loved showing off the flags in her honour. While some simply shared her name, others had a huge image of her face as they were waved up high. And she shared a sweet snap of "Glasto chicks" as she re-shared Zoe Ball's upload. The radio host admitted she had been sobbing while watching Lewis Capaldi's surprise set before bumping into Denise. ‌ Denise previously admitted she was "stressing out" ahead of her son's appearance. "I've not really been a festival bunny - I don't really do festivals,' confessed Denise, 67, in a chat with The Mirror. "The only one I've been to is Coachella. It was all VIP and very lovely. Hot, sunny and gorgeous and I thought 'Oh, this is okay'. And no one stays there, everyone goes home at the end of the night. I am stressed about Glastonbury.' ‌ And she admitted she won't be seeing out the full weekend's entertainment. 'I am not going to stay for the whole three days,' she added. 'I would rather be able to dip in and out. I might dip back in for the Sunday night to see Rod.' Her Friday night fun comes as BRIT award-winning The 1975 - made up of Matty, Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald, and George Daniel - step out onto the iconic Pyramid Stage. Denise admitted Matty, 36, gets his musical talent from dad Tim, 73, who appeared in ITV 's Benidorm.
