5 Alabama football position battles to monitor during 2025 fall camp
Yes, after a lengthy break during the summer months, the Crimson Tide will once again be back on the football field this upcoming week for the start of fall camp.
A multi-week span leading up to Alabama's first game, fall camp is not only a period of time where the anticipation for the upcoming season continues to build for all, but it is also where the Crimson Tide put the finishing touches on things prior to playing meaningful games.
Similar to years past as well, there will be multiple position battles for the Crimson Tide this fall that are set to take center stage, some of which are at key positions.
Here are five position battles to monitor throughout fall camp for the Crimson Tide, as well as some names to know at each spot.
Quarterback
Kalen DeBoer recently stated at SEC media days that if Alabama had to play a game, then Ty Simpson would likely be the starter. However, Simpson will still likely have to go out and win the job during fall camp over Keelon Russell and Austin Mack, with these next couple of weeks likely deciding who starts Week 1 at Florida State.
Left Guard
As the Crimson Tide replace Tyler Booker at left guard this season, there are likely two names competing this fall for that starting spot in Kam Dewberry and Geno VanDeMark. With both certain to see significant time this season, the duo will likely compete in fall camp to determine who starts at left guard Week 1 at Florida State.
Inside Linebacker
Alabama has a starting inside linebacker returning in Deontae Lawson, but also have to replace a key starter from a year ago in Jihaad Campbell. In that competition, Justin Jefferson is undoubtedly the favorite, but another name to know is Colorado transfer Nikhai Hill-Green, who will also play significant snaps this season.
Punter
Special teams in general will be a talking point for Alabama entering the season, but the punter position in particular might be one to watch this fall. Blake Doud is the arguable favorite to start entering fall camp after transferring into the program, but will be battling for the starting spot with incoming freshman Alex Asparuhov.
Right Tackle
Lastly, left guard is not the only position along Alabama's offensive line to monitor during fall camp, as the same can be said for right tackle. Wilkin Formby is likely the favorite to start entering fall camp, but there are certainly many others who are in the mix as well.

"Their fans were definitely getting hype, crowd was -- couldn't hear anything, stuff like that, but probably the best stadium I've been in last year." Smith was then asked about a potential budding rivalry with Oregon with the teams playing twice last year, and with where the trajectory of both are heading. "Kind of -- a little bit. That's how I think it's going," continued Smith. "The way things are going, it's kind of like Ohio State-Oregon is starting to be like a little rivalry, I guess." Obviously, Smith didn't mean to slight Ohio Stadium being that he plays there and it can get loud too, but when you go on the road, the noise factor when on offense can make a huge difference. I can vouge from personal experience that Autzen Stadium was indeed the loudest I've ever heard a stadium. It was a great environment and venue, and hopefully, the brass at Ohio State took note and try to do some things to make the environment in the Horseshoe even better. Kitayama wins 3M Open. Lottie Woad wins in her pro debut and Harrington takes a 2nd senior major
BLAINE, Minn. (AP) — Kurt Kitayama finished a sizzling weekend with a 6-under 65 to win the 3M Open on Sunday by one shot over Sam Stevens for his second PGA Tour victory. Kitayama, who tied the tournament record with a career-best 60 on Saturday to enter the final round within one of the lead, birdied six of the first eight holes to take control on a 91-degree afternoon at the TPC Twin Cities. Kitayama led by one playing the par-5 18th when he hit 5-iron onto the back slope of a bunker. He blasted out to about 18 feet and took two putts for par to finish at 23-under 261. Matt Wallace, David Lipsky, Pierceson Coody and Jake Knapp tied for third, three strokes back. Kitayama, whose only other PGA Tour win was the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2023, moved to No. 53 in the FedEx Cup with one week remaining for the top 70 to qualify for the postseason. He also earned a two-year exemption and a spot in the Masters next year. LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour IRVINE, Scotland (AP) — Lottie Woad never flinched Sunday on her way to a 4-under 68 to win the Women's Scottish Open by three shots over Hyo Joo Kim in her professional debut. The 21-year-old Englishwoman is the second player in three years to win on the LPGA Tour in her pro debut, following Rose Zhang in the Mizuho Americas Open at Liberty National in 2023. PGA Tour Champions BERKSHIRE, England (AP) — Padraig Harrington was so focused on his game that he didn't notice a leaderboard or see Rory McIlroy in the gallery Sunday at the Senior British Open. Staked to a two-shot lead, Harrington made eagle on the first hole on the Old Course at Sunningdale and no one got closer than two shots the rest of the way as he became the fifth player with a Senior British Open and a British Open title. Jeffrey Kang made eagle on the par-5 18th at The Glen Club for a 65 that allowed him to finish alone in second. Ex-Steelers QB Kenny Pickett injured at Browns training camp
Browns QB Kenny Pickett injured his hamstring near the end of Saturday's practice and is expected to re-evaluate the injury later this week, per sources. Pickett was coming off a strong couple of practices, per sources, and at least for the short term, there now will be more reps… Former Steelers QB Kenny Pickett has suffered an unfortunate hamstring injury at Browns training camp — opening the door for the starting competition to get additional reps. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Pickett suffered his hamstring injury at the end of Saturday's practice — and is set to be re-evaluated later this week. The Steelers traded Pickett to the Eagles last offseason — who then sent him to the Browns, where he's involved in a four-way competition for the starting QB position in Cleveland. Pickett was splitting reps with QBs Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders for the Browns' starting spot — and despite a strong early showing at camp, the ex-Steeler will likely fight an uphill battle for the job while nursing his hamstring. Here's to hoping the former first-rounder can return quickly and earn the role for Cleveland — as the Week 6 revenge game, when the Browns visit Pittsburgh, hinges on Pickett under center.
