NDTV23-06-2025
Australian pacer Mitchell Starc will have two major milestones to tick off, as he will be aiming to become only the fourth Aussie to reach 400 Test wickets and become the 16th player from his team to feature in 100 Tests during the tour of West Indies from June 25 onwards. The first Test of the three-match series will be held in Barbados. It will mark the start of Australia's ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle after its loss to South Africa in the final of the 2023-25 WTC cycle. Currently, in 97 Tests, Starc has taken 387 wickets, with an average of 27.49, with the best figures of 6/48.
He has taken 15 five-wicket hauls and two ten-wicket hauls. He is Australia's fourth-highest all-time wicket-taker in Tests. If he reaches to the 400 wicket mark, he will only be the second Aussie pacer to do so.
Also, nine more wickets will help him overtake Brett Lee (718 international scalps in 322 matches) to become Australia's third-highest all-format wicket-taker of all time. Currently, Starc has 710 wickets in 289 international matches.
Above him in Australia's wicket tally are late spin great Shane Warne (708 scalps in 145 Tests), Glenn McGrath (563 wickets in 124 Tests) and Nathan Lyon (553 wickets in 137 Tests).
Infact, all the members of the iconic Aussie bowling quartet are nearing milestones and upward movements in charts. Lyon is just 11 wickets away from becoming Australia's second-highest in Tests. Lyon, who has 583 international wickets in 168 matches, is just eight wickets away from overtaking Mitchell Johnson (590 wickets in 256 international matches) to become the fifth-highest international wicket-taker for Australia.
Also, Josh Hazlewood, currently sitting at 281 wickets in 73 Tests, needs just 19 more to become the ninth Australian to reach 300 Test wickets. 'Hoff' as he is known, is sitting at 486 international wickets in 216 matches, is just 14 scalps away from becoming the eighth player from Australia to reach 500 international wickets.
Skipper Pat Cummins, currently having 301 Test wickets in 68 Tests, fresh off a six-wicket haul in the WTC final, is just 10 wickets away from overtaking Lee (310 wickets in 76 Tests) to become the seventh-highest wicket-taker for Aussies in Tests.
It will be followed by matches in Grenada (July 3) and Jamaica (July 12), the latter being the West Indies' first-ever day-night Test match.
Australia Test squad: Pat Cummins (c), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Matt Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster.

PCB's Incompetence Exposed In Epic Rant By Ex-Pakistan Star: "What's The Point?"

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal has slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for appointing Azhar Mahmood as interim head coach of the team. Akmal said he "didn't understand the logic" behind the appointment and questioned the PCB for its lack of seriousness and poor managment. Speaking on The Game Plan Podcast on YouTube, Akmal likened Mahmood's appointment to PCB's controversial move of naming Mickey Arthur as director of cricket while the South Africa was remained committed to English county side Hampshire. "I just don't understand the logic behind this decision. It's exactly like the time PCB made Mickey Arthur director of cricket while allowing him to continue working with a county team. I couldn't understand it then, and I can't understand it now," said Kamran. Akmal hinted that Mahmood's appointment reflects PCB's incompetence, blaming the board for the recent decline of Pakistan cricket. "That role (Mickey Arthur) has continued, and it has brought many issues into Pakistan cricket. The same thing is now happening with the interim coaching setup. Before this, it was Aaqib Javed, then Mohammad Hafeez and now Azhar," he added. Akmal also urged the PCB to focus on long term goals instead of pleasing people. "These decisions reflect a lack of seriousness. When the PCB starts thinking seriously and acting professionally, it won't have to make such compromises or temporary appointments," Akmal pointed out. "Everyone has been appeased, and now Azhar has also been rewarded. If you've made him head coach, then give him the full time and responsibility. Otherwise, what's the point?" he explained. Former fast bowler and 1992 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup winner Aaqib Javed had been fulfilling the role as red-ball coach following the departure of Australian Jason Gillespie towards the end of last year. Mahmood's first task will be preparing the side for their upcoming assignment for the new ICC World Test Championship cycle, which is scheduled to be when South Africa visits Pakistan for a two-match series later this year.

Play More T20 Cricket, Take One Day Cricket Away: Heinrich Klaasen Explains Sudden Retirement From International Cricket

Former South African cricketer Heinrich Klaasen, who retired from international cricket just last month after seven impactful years, has shared powerful insights into the future of the sport. At 33, Klaasen believes the calendar is overcrowded and in need of reform. In an interview, he suggested that the ICC should consider scrapping bilateral One-Day Internationals (ODIs) to make room for formats that resonate more with fans namely Test matches and T20s. 'I think the only change that I will make is probably take [bilateral] one‑day cricket away from international cricket. Make it more Test matches for teams that don't play a lot of Test matches. Play more T20 cricket, because that's what the people want to see. You can keep your one‑day World Cups, and just maybe a month before the one‑day World Cup starts, you play five games for every team, just to get used to that format," he told cricbuzz. Klaasen on Financial Pressures Klaasen also addressed player retention, particularly in South Africa. He emphasized the need for national boards to support their players financially so they aren't compelled to chase wealth in global leagues. 'It's not a big change that you have to make in that format. It's more the international teams that you probably will struggle with. If they don't take care of the international players, they will go out and go play leagues to make some extra cash. If you look at the Aussies and the England boys, they get looked after well, so they don't need to go around the world and go play all these leagues.' Klaasen's International Milestones Klaasen burst onto the international scene in 2018, quickly emerging as a commanding force in South Africa's white-ball lineup. In over 60 ODIs, he amassed more than 2,000 runs at a stellar average close to 44, highlighted by an explosive 174 against Australia in 2023 a record second-highest score by a number-five batsman. In T20Is, he featured in 58 matches with an impressive strike rate of 141.84. His final appearance came during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against New Zealand. Heinrich Klaasen's departure marks the end of a thrilling chapter not only for his dynamic batting, but also for his bold suggestions on how the future of global cricket might be reshaped.
