PCB's Incompetence Exposed In Epic Rant By Ex-Pakistan Star: "What's The Point?"

NDTVa day ago
Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal has slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for appointing Azhar Mahmood as interim head coach of the team. Akmal said he "didn't understand the logic" behind the appointment and questioned the PCB for its lack of seriousness and poor managment. Speaking on The Game Plan Podcast on YouTube, Akmal likened Mahmood's appointment to PCB's controversial move of naming Mickey Arthur as director of cricket while the South Africa was remained committed to English county side Hampshire.
"I just don't understand the logic behind this decision. It's exactly like the time PCB made Mickey Arthur director of cricket while allowing him to continue working with a county team. I couldn't understand it then, and I can't understand it now," said Kamran.
Akmal hinted that Mahmood's appointment reflects PCB's incompetence, blaming the board for the recent decline of Pakistan cricket.
"That role (Mickey Arthur) has continued, and it has brought many issues into Pakistan cricket. The same thing is now happening with the interim coaching setup. Before this, it was Aaqib Javed, then Mohammad Hafeez and now Azhar," he added.
Akmal also urged the PCB to focus on long term goals instead of pleasing people.
"These decisions reflect a lack of seriousness. When the PCB starts thinking seriously and acting professionally, it won't have to make such compromises or temporary appointments," Akmal pointed out.
"Everyone has been appeased, and now Azhar has also been rewarded. If you've made him head coach, then give him the full time and responsibility. Otherwise, what's the point?" he explained.
Former fast bowler and 1992 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup winner Aaqib Javed had been fulfilling the role as red-ball coach following the departure of Australian Jason Gillespie towards the end of last year.
Mahmood's first task will be preparing the side for their upcoming assignment for the new ICC World Test Championship cycle, which is scheduled to be when South Africa visits Pakistan for a two-match series later this year.

Siraj steps up but stubborn Smith, Brook keep hosts alive

CHENNAI: It was the ninth ball on Day Three in Edgbaston. Mohammed Siraj ran in with all the hopes of giving India an early breakthrough, and bowled a full delivery that was drifting down the leg side. On any other day, Joe Root might have flicked it for a four or just completely missed. Friday was neither as he got a feather touch and Rishabh Pant completed the rest. England's best batter was back in the pavilion and Siraj had found his energy. In the very next ball, he delivered a sharp bouncer that caught England captain Ben Stokes fending off in an awkward manner. India had taken two in two and England were half the side down — 84/5 in 21.4 overs, the scoreboard read. India, all of a sudden, found themselves on top with a chance to go for the kill and gain an insurmountable first innings lead. Enter Jamie Smith, the 24-year-old keeper-batter, who is slowly but steadily moving up the ranks in the England batting line-up. Over the next 60-odd overs, Smith, along with Harry Brook, delayed the inevitable as the duo added 303 runs from 368 balls before the second new ball was taken and Akash Deep eventually dismissed Brook for 158 runs from 234 balls. The Bengal pacer followed it up with the wicket of Chris Woakes before Siraj took charge and ran through the tail, finishing with 6/70. England were all out for 407, trailing by 180 runs and Smith was left stranded 16 runs short of a double century. It was a day India would have taken at the start of play, especially with Siraj rising to the occasion in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. In many ways, being the leader of the pace attack seems to bring out the best in him as Siraj showed why he is a much-valued part of the Indian team. He was complimented well by Akash Deep who too took a four-fer while the rest of the bowling attack were made to look ordinary by Smith and Brook. While Siraj's six-fer and the stark difference in his Test averages with and without Bumrah in the XI remains the story of the day for India, between the second over and the second new ball, Smith and Brook showed why they are rated highly in English cricket. Brook, who had already hit a 99 in Leeds, maintained his good touch to play a steady innings on a good batting wicket, but it was Smith who dictated the terms from the get go.

Mohammed Siraj And Akash Deep Help India Become 1st Team In The World To...

Last Updated: Thanks to Siraj and Akash's super show with the ball, six English batters—Duckett, Pope, Stokes, Carse, Tongue, and Bashir—failed to open their accounts in the first innings. Mohammed Siraj picked up six wickets for 70 runs in 19.4 overs, and Akash Deep finished with figures of 4 for 88 in 20 overs on Friday (July 4) to help India bowl England out for 407 runs in the first innings of the ongoing second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The duo dismissed as many as six English batters for a duck in the first innings of the second Test, and their super effort with the ball helped the Shubman Gill-led side become the first team in the world to get half a dozen English batters out for naught in one innings of a Test match. On four previous occasions, five English batters scored ducks in an inning of a Test match, but Friday was the first time when as many as six batters failed to open their accounts. Akash Deep started the proceedings for India by dismissing Ben Duckett for a five-ball duck on Thursday evening. Duckett was caught by Shubman Gill in the slip on the fourth ball of the third over of England's first innings. On the next ball, Akash dismissed Ollie Pope for a golden duck. Siraj joined the party on Friday morning by getting England Test captain Ben Stokes out for a golden duck in the first session, and then in the third session, he dismissed Bryon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Shoaib Bashir for zero each. Siraj's figures of 6 for 70 also helped him become first Indian bowler to take a six-wicket haul in England as well as South Africa. A total of eight Indian bowlers—Ishant Sharma, Amar Singh, Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, Chetan Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Dilip Doshi, Bishan Singh Bedi, and Siraj—have dismissed six or more English batters in one innings of a Test match played in England, and seven Indian bowlers—Shardul Thakur, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Jasprit Bumrah, Javagal Srinath, Ravindra Jadeja, and Siraj—have picked up a six-wicket haul in South Africa, but only Siraj is the only common name in both lists. Siraj opened his wicket account in the first innings of the second Test on Thursday by taking Zak Crawley's wicket. Crawley was caught by Karun Nair in the slips after making 19 runs from 30 balls. He picked up Joe Root's (22) and Ben Stokes's (0) wickets in back-to-back balls on Friday morning before dismissing the last three batters in the third session. We'll Find Another Way: Englands Coach Confident They Can Stage Turnaround Vs India At Edgbaston

Despite being pushed to the edge by a dominant Indian side in the second Test at Edgbaston, England assistant coach Jeetan Patel remains optimistic. The former Warwickshire spinner, who knows the Birmingham ground well, believes Ben Stokes and his team can still claw their way back and take a 2-0 lead in the series. India posted a mammoth 587 in the first innings, after which England suffered a disastrous collapse, falling to 25 for 3 on Thursday evening and later slumping to 84 for 5 on Friday morning. Still, Patel emphasized that time and opportunity remain. 'There's still three days of cricket left. There's a lot of cricket to go. And I think on a fast-scoring ground you never know what can happen sort of stuff," he told The Guardian. 'We'll just find another way to get over the line. And I think that's the beauty of the team that we have, and the players we have and the belief they have in how they want to play the game.' England were dealt early setbacks with Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope both dismissed for ducks on Day 2. Zak Crawley followed soon after for 19, while Joe Root managed only 22. Things went from bad to worse when Ben Stokes became the third English batter to be dismissed without scoring. But just when the hosts seemed out of it, Harry Brook and Jamie Smith turned the tide with a sensational double-century partnership, both registering hundreds to revive England's innings and inject life back into the contest. Earlier, it was Shubman Gill's incredible 269 that had put India in a commanding position. Patel praised the young captain's innings, calling it a batting clinic. 'The way Shubman batted over the two days has been fantastic. He's put on a proper masterclass in how to bat on a good wicket,' said Patel. 'The guys threw everything at him, so they're very tired after their efforts. Everyone's all right, everyone's fine, there's just tired minds and tired bodies.' As the second Test moves into its latter stages, England's resilience and belief as expressed by Patel will be tested. But if their counter-punch from Brook and Smith is any indication, the game is far from over. England are currently at 407-9. Mohammad Siraj took a fifer and Jamie Smith is eyeing 200.
