AFL world erupts over detail in post-match scenes involving Sam Docherty

Yahoo2 days ago
The AFL world is showering Kade Simpson with praise after a stunning gesture for Sam Docherty after the Carlton veteran's farewell game. The Hawks spoiled Docherty's farewell to the AFL with a 24-point win over the Blues at the MCG.
Docherty announced his retirement during the week, and capped off his remarkable career with a goal in front of 51,271 fans on Thursday night. The 31-year-old was then given an emotional send-off after the final siren and was chaired off the ground.
And one lovely detail in the post-match scenes caught the eye of AFL fans and commentators. The two people who lifted Docherty onto their shoulders to carry him off were Carlton captain Patrick Cripps and Hawthorn assistant coach Simpson.
While he may be on the Hawks' coaching staff, Simpson is a Carlton great having played 342 games for the club. He spent the majority of his career playing alongside Docherty, and the pair share a close bond.
And nothing epitomised their bond more than Simpson being one of the people to chair Docherty off the ground. It's extremely rare to see someone from the opposition team being part of the traditional post-match act, but Docherty and Simpson put club loyalties aside in a beautiful moment of mateship.
'This is a pretty special moment,' Hawthorn champion Luke Hodge said in commentary for Channel 7. Social media was blown away by the lovely moment, with one person writing: "Kade Simpson chairing Doc off along side Cripps. My heart is hurting."
Another commented: "Fitting seeing Kade Simpson being a part of the chairing off of Sam Docherty... both heart and soul players down at Princes Park. Even as a one-eyed Pie you have to recognise 'Players' when you see them! Good luck in your retirement Doc!"
Great moment Docherty, Kade Simpson chairing him. It's sad for him the game was such a non event.

Sam Docherty grateful after AFL career comes to an end
Docherty has twice overcome being diagnosed with testicular cancer and endured three knee reconstructions. He won a Carlton best-and-fairest award and All-Australian selection.
The 31-year-old entered the field of play for his 184th and final game with his family on Thursday night, and had 16 disposals between a wing and half-forward. He was moved into the attacking quarter after half-time, and celebrated with a bow to the crowd after slotting a fitting farewell goal in the third quarter.
Docherty told Channel 7 after the game: 'Strange feeling, to be honest. It's all I've done for 14 years - I don't really know how to sum it up at the moment. Amazing to have all my friends, family (here), share the game with Weiters (Jacob Weitering), chair-off with Simmo, it's about as good as I could've felt other than getting the win.
'Strange feeling not coming in next week or having to do any recovery after this but I've had a career I'm pretty proud of, happy to go and relax and do some other stuff for a while.'

Carlton coach disappointed with team's performance
Carlton coach Michael Voss conceded it was a disappointing result in Docherty's final appearance and vice-captain Jacob Weitering's 200th game. "We came in wanting to create a sort of pretty special memory off two players that we hold in the highest of regard," Voss said afterwards.
"They've had huge impact on our football club ... so we would've liked to have started better. The Hawks getting the jump and the scoreboard going that way, it just proved too hard to be able to fight back. While the rest of the game was somewhat a stalemate, the reality was the margin was too big to drag back."

Harper and Schwarber spark the Phillies to a 9-4 win over the reeling Yankees, who await Judge news

Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Bryce Harper homered deep into the right-field bleachers and Kyle Schwarber hit a two-run double after New York's 10th error in five games, sparking the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-4 win Saturday as the reeling Yankees awaited test rests on the right elbow of captain Aaron Judge. Trea Turner drove in two runs and Edmundo Sosa also homered for the Phillies, who opened a 9-1 lead. Philadelphia started the day a half-game behind the NL East-leading New York Mets. Schwarber had six RBIs and Turner was 6 for 11 as Philadelphia outscored New York 21-9 in the first two games of the three-game series. Ranger Suarez (8-4) allowed one run and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts and one walk, throwing a season-high 108 pitches. Judge was out of the Yankees' starting lineup for just the second time this season. His elbow has been bothering him since a throw Tuesday at Toronto, and manager Aaron Boone said the two-time AL MVP was sent for a scan Saturday morning. New York began the day a season-high 5 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Toronto and dropped to 3-5 since the All-Star break. Schwarber doubled after second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. bobbled Turner's potential inning-ending, double-play grounder in the seventh, Chisholm's 12th error this season. Ryan McMahon went 1 for 3 with a walk in his Yankees debut, a day after the third baseman was acquired from Colorado for a pair of pitching prospects. Marcus Stroman (2-2) allowed four runs, five hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings. Sosa hit a two-run homer in the seventh off Allan Winans and Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run drive against Daniel Robert in the bottom half. Key plays Sosa left with a bruised back after the third baseman was elbowed by left fielder Brandon Marsh in a collision while catching Chisholm's seventh-inning popup. Key stat New York is 21-28 following a 35-20 start. Up next New York LHP Carlos Rodon (10-7, 3.10) and Philadelphia RHP Zack Wheeler (9-3, 2.39) start Sunday's series finale. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 2

Phillies Enter Trade Deadline Race for All-Star Slugger Eugenio Suárez

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies have reportedly entered the race for All-Star slugger Eugenio Suárez. According to Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies have had conversations with the Arizona Diamondbacks about Suárez. Unlike most teams pursuing him, though, the situation in Philadelphia is more complex. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 21: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks reacts after hitting a solo home run against the Houston Astros during the third inning at Chase Field on July 21, 2025 in... PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 21: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks reacts after hitting a solo home run against the Houston Astros during the third inning at Chase Field on July 21, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. More"It wouldn't be the cleanest fit," wrote Lauber. "Suárez is a third baseman, and although Alec Bohm is out with a fractured rib, the Phillies expect him to return next month. Trading for Suárez, then, would eventually require an undesirable countermove, such as putting Kyle Schwarber back in left field." Defensively, Suárez is league average at best, but his offensive production certainly makes up for it. The Diamondbacks would not have stayed in the playoff race for as long as they did without his performances. However, it shouldn't be out of the picture to keep Schwarber as the designated hitter. If Suárez is the better third baseman, he should keep his spot over Bohm. "The Phillies would have to decide if the offensive bump from adding Suárez, tied with Schwarber for second in the National League with 36 home runs, would outweigh weakening the outfield defense," added Lauber. "Suárez, eligible for free agency after the season, could also provide right-handed protection for Bryce Harper in the middle of the order." The answer to this should be yes. Philadelphia should absolutely sacrifice defense to acquire Suárez, whether that is by moving Schwarber to left or by playing Suárez at third over Bohm. Whether they truly do it remains to be seen. Suárez would require a strong return going back to Arizona, and a third baseman is not on the main priority list for the Phillies. Yankees fall flat again in brutal loss to Phillies as they hold their breath on Aaron Judge

Try it free With Aaron Judge out of the lineup in another ominous sign for the crashing Yankees, they didn't do nearly enough to pick up their suddenly banged-up captain and offensive linchpin. While Judge underwent an MRI for an elbow issue Saturday, the Yankee bats mostly were throttled without him until a late Giancarlo Stanton homer in a 9-4 loss to the Phillies at the Stadium to fall to 3-5 since the All-Star break and 14-23 since June 13. Imported third baseman Ryan McMahon went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts and a walk in his pinstriped debut after he was acquired Friday from the MLB-worst Rockies. 'They brought me in to play third base and to play baseball. That's something I feel confident in,' McMahon said before the game. 'So I'm gonna go out there and try to do the best that I can and do whatever the team asks me to do to try to help. 4 Marcus Stroman and the Yankees took a lopsided loss to the Phillies on July 26, 2025. Jason Szenes / New York Post 4 Ryan McMahon reacts after he strikes out swinging during the fourth inning on Saturday. Robert Sabo for NY Post 'I think I'm more excited to just be a part of this lineup. From the other side, you look over at the Yankee lineup and it's intimidating.' The Bombers' offense looks far less intimidating, of course, without Judge's presence. Phillies lefty Ranger Suarez shut them down over 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS Yanks starter Marcus Stroman had pitched to a 3.00 ERA over his previous four outings, but he coughed up four runs over the first 3 2/3 innings, beginning with an RBI single by J.T. Realmuto in the first and a solo homer to right by Bryce Harper in the third for an early 2-0 hole. Stroman then lost the strike zone and walked four batters in the fourth, including one to No.9 hitter Johan Rojas with the bases loaded to force in a run. Trea Turner made it 4-0 on an infield out, and Stroman was pulled for righty Yerry de los Santos before he could complete the frame. 4 Allan Winans of the New York Yankees reacts after giving up a home run during the seventh inning. Robert Sabo for NY Post 4 Edmundo Sosa of the Philadelphia Phillies celebrates with Max Kepler of the Philadelphia Phillies after they both score on Sosa's home run during the seventh inning. Robert Sabo for NY Post McMahon, who led the National League with 127 strikeouts before the trade, came up with two runners on in the bottom half. He was whiffed by Suarez for a second straight at-bat to start his Yankee career, but Jasson Dominguez got them on the board with an RBI single to center. Turner drove in another run for the Phils with a double to right against de los Santos in the sixth. The Phillies tacked on four more runs against Allan Winans one inning later for a 9-1 game, including a two-run blast by Edmundo Sosa.
