Steelers Are Lying About Trading T.J. Watt, Hints Mike Florio
Steelers Are Lying About Trading T.J. Watt, Hints Mike Florio originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers position on opting to dump unhappy superstar pass-rusher T.J. Watt in a trade seems pretty clear to us. Advertisement The work needs to be done regarding Watt's desire for a lucrative contract extension. ... maybe a desire as grand as $40 million per year. The Steelers are making it perfectly clear that while they might not like the "$40 million'' part, they agree with where the efforts need to point. "(Expletive) no'' was the answer coming out of the building earlier this week on the subject of a blockbuster trade-away of Watt. And now Steelers team insider Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is echoing that, as during a Tuesday appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show" he used a pair of forceful three-word phrases to state the club's position. Advertisement Pittsburgh trading Watt isn't "on the radar,'' he asserted. A trade is "not gonna happen,'' he added. Dulac also added a timetable to the proceedings, saying he believes Watt will sign an extension "sometime between" the Steelers' preseason finale at the Carolina Panthers (that game is on Aug. 21) and Pittsburgh's Week 1 regular-season matchup at the New York Jets (that game is on Sept. 7). "The Steelers want to and believe they will sign T.J. Watt," Dulac said. Dulac is plugged-in and on the beat. Yet ... now along comes Mike Florio of who has a habit of offering unwanted advice to teams and players and non-sourced info to his audience. Advertisement And Florio isn't just failing to buy what the Steelers (and reputable Pittsburgh media people) are saying. He's sort of calling them liars. "NFL Media pushed the idea that they have no intention to trade T.J. Watt, which is often the precursor to a trade," Florio claimed during a Wednesday appearance on Pittsburgh sports radio station 93.7 The Fan. Florio is right about how real teams and real reporters choose their words wisely - and the reason is not because "everybody is a liar.'' This is a never-say-never league. Most trained and experienced reporters recognize that and therefore wisely leave ajar the door in the event of change. Advertisement That's an ancient art now in the world of clickbait journalism, where headlines must be forceful and loud and definitive ... even if the reporter's information isn't definitive at all. There is no reason to think the Pittsburgh media is fibbing about what its been told and there is no reason to think the Steelers are covering up some secret plot to trade one of their all-time greatest players. If this thing blows up, that will be driven by a number of factors. But a deceitful conspiracy won't likely be one of them. Steelers' New Cornerback Jalen Ramsey Gets Pay Raise Ahead of 2025
Steelers' New Cornerback Jalen Ramsey Gets Pay Raise Ahead of 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers' newsworthy offseason continues to turn heads. The team acquired cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith, along with a seventh-round pick in 2027, from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Advertisement This move is on the heels of Pittsburgh acquiring corner Darius Slay Jr. earlier in the offseason. The Steelers might have one of, if not the, best cornerback crews in the NFL with Ramsey, Slay Jr. and Joey Porter Jr. But the trade was just the first part of the deal with Ramsey. The Steelers have reportedly already given the All-Pro corner a pay raise ahead of next season. "The Miami Dolphins have agreed to trade three-time All-Pro CB Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers," ESPN's Adam Schefter wrote via his X account. "As a part of the trade, Ramsey will get a $1.5 million raise this season, bringing his 2025 compensation up to $26.6 million. Steelers get their man and Ramsey gets another raise." Advertisement Ramsey will enter his 10th season in the league. The seven-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro will be joining his fourth team in the league after being drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016, then moving to the Rams in 2019 and the Dolphins in 2023. The former Florida State Seminole has registered 534 total tackles with 432 solo and 27 for loss. He has added three sacks, two fumble recoveries, six forced fumbles and 24 interceptions with one pick-6 across 135 games and 134 starts. Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith Discussed Joining Steelers Before Trade
Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith Discussed Joining Steelers Before Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers recently acquired tight end Jonnu Smith and cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Miami Dolphins through a trade with the AFC West team, signaling their commitment to being all-in for 2025. Advertisement That move, along with the signing of Aaron Rodgers and the trade acquisition of receiver D.K. Metcalf, should be a sign that the Steelers believe they can win it all in this very small window with the 41-year-old Rodgers. On a recent episode of Terron Armstead's new podcast, Smith revealed that he and Ramsey had conversations about possibly joining Pittsburgh and playing for coach Mike Tomlin. "Me and [Jalen Ramsey] chopped it up before this happened," Smith said. "We chopped it up before this happened. He obviously knew the situation that he was in in Miami and felt that it was time for him to move on. We chopped it up one-on-one about what potentially could be as rumors were floating around. We're like, 'Bro, if this thing really goes down, if this thing really happens, Pittsburgh is a team that's historically going to be always be in the dance. It's just maybe a couple missing pieces like us that can fill all that void and get over that hump.'" "One thing that we both admired about the situation was culture. The culture that Mike [Tomlin] established. I can't wait to play for him." Advertisement Smith will enter his ninth year in the league next season, and he's posted 307 receptions for 3,307 yards and 28 touchdowns so far. Last season, he posted career highs with 88 catches and 884 yards while tying his career-best eight touchdowns. He also made his first Pro Bowl. Ramsey will enter his 10th season in the league.
