Cold weather brings unexpected snow and fire tragedies
Johannesburg's Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson, Nana Radebe-Kgiba, told SABC NEWS that the deaths were connected to paraffin stoves and open-flame braziers. In just two months, Johannesburg has seen over 300 winter fire emergencies, and officials warn that the number could increase.
The Weather Service has issued alerts for regions affected by the cold front. According to meteorologist Edward Engelbrecht, a low-pressure system is drawing sub-Antarctic air inland, making the colder weather worse.
While urban areas, including Johannesburg, experience extreme frost and wind chill, mountainous regions are likely to experience snowfall.
Several fires have broken out in Gauteng because of the cold weather. Most occurred in informal settlements where people use unsafe methods to heat their homes. Materials that catch fire easily and are unable to provide safe energy put communities at risk of death.
At the same time, the cold front makes travelling dangerous all over South Africa. Officials are urging the nation to avoid nonessential travel and to put fire and road safety first.

Sewage updates across Kingsburgh and Amanzimtoti
WARD 97 councillor, André Beetge, said most of the sewage complaints in Kingsburgh and Amanzimtoti have now been resolved, following physical oversight visits conducted last week. He added that all reported issues were inspected and, in most cases, resolved or in the process of being addressed. Also read: Lower Illovo resident endures sewage nightmare Kingsburgh A temporary sewage line has been installed along Thomas Holstead Drive, where a manhole was washed away during recent storms. 'The temporary line will remain in place while the damaged manhole is being rebuilt,' said Beetge. Doon Heights Two breaks in the pipeline between Mopani and Camelsfoot streets, which were causing effluent to flow towards Valley Road and into the Little Amanzimtoti River, have also been repaired. Amanzimtoti The wastewater department is attending to a damaged line between the Topham Road and Chain Rocks pump stations. This section runs along George Glendennen Alley, next to the railway line. Beetge confirmed that progress is being made. 'Teams are on the ground and working to complete repairs to the damaged infrastructure,' he said. Also read: South Coast Sun 25 July 2025 In another area of Amanzimtoti, the sewage line along Bernadotte Street that was washed away during recent storms, has been replaced. New concrete pedestals have also been installed to replace those that previously supported the line. Illovo Beach In Illovo Beach, a blocked manhole that caused sewage to spill into a nearby nursery has been cleared. 'This is a recurring issue caused by foreign matter such as rags, nappies and sanitary pads being flushed into a system that was never designed to handle anything beyond human waste and toilet paper,' explained Beetge. While chlorine and lime have been used to disinfect affected waterways, Beetge cautioned that odours may linger. 'There might still be a smell until the next proper downpour flushes the system completely,' he said. For more South Coast Sun news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Wet conditions set to grip Gauteng
Gauteng residents should prepare for a drop in temperatures and scattered showers starting this evening and continuing into tomorrow. Weather forecasts indicate that the province will experience cloudy skies and isolated rainfall, with chilly overnight temperatures expected across the region. Residents of Johannesburg can expect the mercury to dip to around 7°C overnight, while Pretoria will remain only slightly warmer with a low of 8°C. Tomorrow's maximum temperatures will range between 21°C in Johannesburg and 22°C in Pretoria, offering a cool but manageable day ahead. 'We're expecting isolated showers over Gauteng starting this evening and persisting into tomorrow,' said Odirile Modipa, a weather forecaster. Alongside the showers, Gauteng will experience mostly cloudy skies, particularly in the morning. By the afternoon, conditions may begin to clear in some areas, but forecasters urge residents to keep warm and remain cautious on wet roads. The central interior, including parts of the Free State and North West, is also forecast to receive isolated rainfall. The light precipitation forms part of a system sweeping from the Western Cape and extending into the Eastern Cape, with snowfall expected over higher-lying mountainous areas in Lesotho and surrounding regions. While Gauteng won't see snow, the overall weather system contributes to the colder-than-usual conditions for this time of year. As the weather system moves inland, it brings a pattern of cold winds and cloudy skies. While the worst of the disruptive weather is expected elsewhere, the continued moisture in the atmosphere means Gauteng could see passing drizzle even after the main showers move through.
