Call the Midwife star confirmed for Jane Austen role in new "beautiful" BBC period drama
Jane Austen's beloved classic revolves around headstrong protagonist Elizabeth Bennet, giving readers a glimpse of her eldest sister Jane's goodheartedness and beauty, and more than a hint of the recklessness of younger sisters Kitty and Lydia.
The middle sister, Mary, doesn't appear very often in the novel. When she does, she's described as a bookish, wallflower character, a homebody who has some social awkwardness to her and doesn't love partaking in the activities of polite society.
Inspired by the novel of the same name by Janice Hadlow, The Other Bennet Sister turns Mary's story into a bigger arc of self-discovery and independence as she steps out of her sisters' shadow.
Coming to BBC One at a later date, the series will be primarily written by Sarah Quintrell (The Power), while Maddie Dai (We Were Dangerous) will pen one of the 10 episodes.

Bruccoleri, known for playing Sister Frances in Call the Midwife, takes on the role of Mary. Celebrating the announcement, the star shared that she's always "related more" to the middle Bennet sister than protagonist Lizzy.
"As someone who has always related more to Mary than Lizzy – something that was confirmed even more by reading Janice Hadlow's brilliant novel – I feel incredibly lucky to be spending these next few months exploring her world in depth, as envisioned by these incredible women," she said in a statement.
"Sarah Quintrell's scripts are packed full of beautiful idiosyncratic detail, empathy, humour and such warmth... revealing that beneath Mary's awkwardness and formality, lies a woman longing for purpose and connection."
As for Quintrell, the writer said: "I feel incredibly lucky to have Ella Bruccoleri on board as Mary Bennet. She brings the perfect balance of heart, sensitivity and humour to the role. I can't wait for audiences to see her take centre stage and shine!"
Author Janice Hadlow joined in praising Bruccoleri, saying: "I'm absolutely delighted that Ella will be playing Mary Bennet. I know she'll be the Mary I've always imagined - awkward, stiff, always saying the wrong thing – but also vulnerable, lonely and desperate to find love.
"I'm sure she'll make audiences feel her plight as deeply as I do, and think she'll make the perfect Other Bennet Sister."
Much like in the novel, the series is set to take Mary away from Meryton and into the soirees of Regency London, with a detour to the Lake District.
"Ella Bruccoleri is the perfect choice to lead The Other Bennet Sister," executive producer Jane Tranter said.
"Mary's journey takes her from overlooked to unforgettable, and I am positive that Ella will capture every shade of that transformation with wit, grace, and emotional depth. We are thrilled to have her at the heart of this story."
Bruccoleri's other acting credits include Bridgerton, Mark Gatiss's Bookish, Extraordinary, murder mystery Ludwig and Paddington threequel, Paddington in Peru.
The Other Bennet Sister will be on BBC iPlayer and BBC One, and in the US and Canada it will be on BritBox.

Fiona Shaw has said she is 'quite excited to see who's going to play me 30 years younger' in the upcoming Killing Eve prequel Honey, which is set to air on the BBC. However, the BBC has described the show as a 'tender and flirty, slick and dangerous darkly comedic Cold War thriller'. According to the official synopsis, Marta will be 'surrounded by enemies and constantly under threat of her cover being blown' while navigating life in a divided city. She finds herself in a tangled web of espionage and attraction as she is 'caught between Friedrich Bauman, the new Head of Counter Espionage for the Stasi, and Aaron Neeland, a reckless, arrogant – and incredibly attractive – CIA operative'. Emma Moran, creator of the Disney Plus series Extraordinary, is the writer of Honey. Announcing the project, Emma said: 'Romantic comedy plus espionage is a dream combination for me.' She added that the series would explore 'the sexy madness of our version of Cold War East Berlin.' The series is being developed by the BBC, though a release date has not yet been announced. Fiona is currently promoting Hot Milk, a film adaptation of Deborah Levy's 2016 novel.

Police investigate Bob Vylan over ‘death to IDF' call at gig before Glastonbury
Punk duo Bob Vylan are being investigated by police after allegedly calling for 'death to every single IDF soldier out there' at a concert one month before Glastonbury. The pair are already being investigated by Avon and Somerset Police over their controversial appearance at Worthy Farm when rapper Bobby Vylan led crowds in chants of 'death, death to the IDF (Israel Defence Forces)' during their livestreamed performance at the Somerset music festival last weekend. In video footage, Bobby Vylan, whose real name is reportedly Pascal Robinson-Foster, 34, appears to be at Alexandra Palace telling crowds: 'Death to every single IDF soldier out there as an agent of terror for Israel. Death to the IDF.' The pair had supported Iggy Pop at the London venue on his tour on May 28, a month before Glastonbury. A Met Police spokesperson said on Wednesday: 'Officers are investigating comments allegedly made during a concert at Alexandra Palace earlier this year. 'The decision to investigate follows the emergence of footage which appears to have been filmed at the venue on 28 May 2025.' It is not clear when the investigation was launched. The probe comes after it was revealed Bob Vylan will no longer play Radar festival in Manchester The duo were due to headline the Saturday slot but no longer appear in the line-up. A statement posted on Radar festival's Instagram account said: 'Bob Vylan will not be appearing at Radar festival this weekend.' It has since updated its website, changing the Saturday slot to 'Headliner TBA' (to be announced). Sean 'Diddy' Combs Acquitted Of Sex Trafficking But Guilty Of Transportation For Prostitution
Almost two months and 34 witnesses later, and the jury in the trial of Sean 'Diddy' Combs has reached a verdict: the musician was acquitted on all charges but the jury returned a guilty verdict on two counts, both of transportation to engage in prostitution relating to Cassie Ventura and an anonymous victim known only as 'Jane'. Per the BBC, the jury deliberated for 13 hours over three days to come to a unanimous decision on the charges against Combs. The trial has been running in New York since May. Much of that court time focused on the prosecution's case. While the verdict isn't a full acquittal, per several outlets, Combs' relief as the charges were read out was palpable. 'Combs just left the courtroom, and before he did, he got on his knees, put his face into his chair and appeared to be praying. He was shaking,' wrote the BBC. 'He got up, looked toward his family, and started clapping loudly as his family and supporters joined in, cheering in the overflow room too.' Per the New York Times, before the verdict was read, Combs walked into the courtroom and mouthed 'We got this' to his family. He was reading a printout of Psalm 11. Combs faces a maximum 10-year prison sentence on each of the two prostitution counts, which Judge Arun Subramanian will determine the sentencing of at a later date. The acquittals on the sex trafficking counts mean he will avoid a 15-year mandatory minimum sentence. He could have faced life in prison if he were convicted on sex trafficking or racketeering conspiracy. The 12-person jury was comprised of eight men and four women, ranging in age from 30 to 74.
