U.S. and China are holding trade talks in London after Trump's phone call with Xi
High-level delegations from the United States and China are meeting in London today to try and shore up a fragile truce in a trade dispute that has roiled the global economy.
A Chinese delegation led by Vice Premier He Lifeng is meeting with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer at a U.K. government building.
After a meeting in in Geneva last month, the world's biggest and second-biggest economies agreed to a 90-day suspension of most of the 100%-plus tariffs they had imposed on each other in an escalating trade war that had sparked fears of recession.
Since these talks, the U.S. and China have exchanged angry words over advanced semiconductors, rare earth materials and visas for Chinese students at American universities. President Donald Trump spoke to Chinese leader Xi Jinping by phone last Thursday in an attempt to put relations back on track.

A fake drama by Congress, says Karnataka BJP
BENGALURU: Ahead of the Congress' protest in Bengaluru against the alleged electoral fraud during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the state, the BJP on Wednesday slammed Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and accused him of 'trying to divert attention from his political incompetence by levelling baseless allegations against the electoral process.' Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R Ashoka said Rahul Gandhi, who has failed to earn the trust of the people, is again trying to divert attention from his political incompetence. 'After sinking the Congress ship in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections, failing even to cross the 100-seat mark, and suffering humiliating defeats in state after state, the forever-confused Rahul Gandhi is now planning a dramatic march in Karnataka,' Ashoka stated in his post on X. Questioning Rahul Gandhi about the purpose of the protest, Ashoka said, 'Is it because you're staring at another crushing defeat in Bihar, just like you faced in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Delhi? And tell us honestly, did Karnataka suddenly occur to you now?' The BJP leader sought to know where was Rahul Gandhi when over 50 poor borrowers died by suicide after being harassed by microfinance companies and where was he when 11 people died in the stampede during IPL celebrations in Bengaluru. 'But now, with defeat looming in Bihar, you're rushing to Bengaluru to create a smokescreen, seeking anticipatory bail for your own leadership failures and your party's growing irrelevance,' he stated in his post on X. BJP state president BY Vijayendra termed the protest planned by the Congress a 'fake drama'. Addressing reporters, he said if Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar have any proof of electoral fraud, they should produce it before a court of law. 'Let's see what kind of protest Rahul Gandhi holds when he comes here on August 4 or 5. We too will prepare a strategy to counter it,' he said. Vijayendra said if Congress is allowed to organise a protest in Bengaluru, the police should also allow BJP to do so. They should not prevent BJP from organising a protest, he added.

Governors, Cabinet Stalwarts, Ex-CMs & RSS-Aligned Intellectuals: Decoding BJP's V-P Shortlist
Last Updated: With NDA holding a majority in the electoral college, BJP's pick is likely to be about shaping narrative through regional outreach, ideological clarity, or statesmanlike symbolism From Governors of opposition- or alliance-ruled states to heavyweight cabinet ministers, from former chief ministers to senior RSS-aligned intellectuals or functionaries—the BJP's shortlist for the next Vice-President of India is likely to showcase its wide strategic bench. Each category signals a different political calculation, which includes the party's political outreach, ideological assertion, parliamentary expertise, or generational transition. Among Governors, names like Tamil Nadu's RN Ravi, Thawar Chand Gehlot of Karnataka and Bihar's Arif Mohammad Khan stand out, News18 has learnt. Ravi has repeatedly made headlines for his confrontational stance with the DMK-led state government, embodying the BJP's assertive federal posture. Ravi served in the CBI and Intelligence Bureau and was also the deputy NSA. Post his retirement, he served his terms as Governor of Nagaland and Meghalaya along with his stint as an interlocutor for the talks between the government and the NSCN(IM). Khan, on the other hand, offers the party a unique blend of Muslim representation and reformist ideology, especially on matters like Triple Talaq and the Uniform Civil Code. Both bring ideological clarity with constitutional legitimacy. Former Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, defence minister Rajnath Singh and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla are seen as elder statesmen who can lend gravitas to the Vice-Presidential role without rocking the political boat. Also being discussed are a few veteran intellectuals from the extended Sangh Parivar ecosystem, individuals who may not have electoral baggage but carry ideological weight and public respect. With the NDA holding a decisive majority in the electoral college, BJP's choice is likely to be less about securing numbers and more about shaping the narrative through regional outreach, ideological clarity, or statesmanlike symbolism. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
