Our New Gods by Thomas Vowles review – debut queer thriller dares to wade into the muck of modern desire

The Guardian26-06-2025
Like many young people, Ash has left his small country town for the big city. As a gay man, it's a relief to be in Melbourne, where he can be himself. Through Grindr he has met James, once a hookup and now a friend, though Ash still desires him. So he's on edge when he meets James's mysterious new boyfriend, Raf – an intimidatingly beautiful Brazilian man who looks like 'Jesus in an old oil painting'.
Then Ash witnesses Raf committing a violent act at a house party. When tragedy strikes later at a bush doof, it seems this is Raf's doing, too. Ash tasks himself with investigating all the clues to uncover the truth – a pursuit that becomes his undoing.
Thomas Vowles' debut is a propulsive and gripping psychological thriller that unfurls at first painfully slowly, then begins to quickly unravel, taking readers into truly deranged places. This book left me feeling physically unwell at times but I couldn't help but peer between my fingers to read on. The author's background as a screenwriter is evident in the delicious, addictive way his story unfolds, and its taut narrative tension.

Ash is a pitiable character from the outset. When the novel opens, he is anxiously hovering outside a house party. Though he has learned 'certain aspects' of how to fit in with the cool, cosmopolitan crowd, such as wearing a silver chain over a plain white T-shirt, he still worries that he will be spotted as an impostor. In the friendly and charismatic James Ash finds someone with whom he can be intimate, even if only emotionally.
Through this nebulous friendship, Vowles demonstrates a deep understanding of the knottiness of Melbourne's queer scene and how platonic, romantic and sexual relationships can blur. Much of Our New Gods takes place in steamy saunas, claustrophobic and highly charged spaces where anonymous sex offers an escape, and becomes another clue in Ash's growing arsenal of evidence against Raf. The sauna is a site for communication and miscommunication; sex is both a pleasurable act and a tool.
Ash's narration becomes more unreliable as the story progresses and he sinks deeper into this thorny situation. In one scene, his reality blurs with James's dreams; in others, his speech becomes erratic and difficult to parse. Vowles develops the character carefully over time, revealing snatches of Ash's life and backstory, in particular his complicated family relationship – in the sauna, at a point of panic, Ash sees 'leering lecherous faces, all of them suddenly my father'. James, too, shares his traumatic father-son memories, in what first seems like bonding between friends or lovers but takes on a more nefarious air as the two men become dangerously intertwined.
Though Raf is ostensibly the villain in the story, Vowles cleverly and subtly twists the narrative to cast doubt on all of his characters. James shows a terrifying duplicity that is difficult to pin down; he knows Ash will do anything for him and seems willing to take advantage of that. Ash's slow descent into madness manifests as a series of delusions – or illusions – which are indistinguishable from reality. Our pity for the character remains steadfast, even when his actions become more unforgivable – he is increasingly desperate and frantic to hold on to what he believes might be the love he's been waiting for, at any cost.
It all makes for a spectacular car crash of a novel that is as compelling as it is challenging, as sickening as it is seductive. Vowles has announced himself with a bang (or many bangs, in every sense of the word) as an audacious new voice in Australian literature – a rare writer who dares to wade deep into the muck to explore the grimy underbelly of modern desire. In his transgression of social and moral niceties, Vowles reveals the ugliness of human nature, with a few flashes of tormented beauty, too.

Activists remanded in custody after RAF aircraft break-in

Four people have been remanded in custody after two Voyager aircraft were damaged at RAF Brize Norton in a protest reportedly carried out by members of Palestine Action. Amy Gardiner-Gibson, 29, Jony Cink, 24, Daniel Jeronymides-Norie, 36, and Lewis Chiaramello, 22, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court in custody on Thursday. The defendants spoke only to confirm their names and were not asked to enter pleas. The incident in Oxfordshire caused about £7 million worth of damage to the aircraft on June 20, police said previously. Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) on Wednesday charged the defendants with conspiracy to enter a prohibited place knowingly for a purpose prejudicial to the safety or interests of the United Kingdom, and conspiracy to commit criminal damage, under the Criminal Law Act 1977. Prosecutor Richard Link said the charges came after a serious incident of criminal damage was reported on June 20. Each defendant is heavily involved in Palestine Action, he added. He told the court that as far as the prosecution is aware, they live 'transient lifestyles'. There was applause and chants of 'free Palestine' from the packed public gallery as the defendants were led away. One kissed his hands towards the supporters as people shouted 'We love you Daniel'. CTPSE on Wednesday said a 41-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender had been released on bail until September 19. A 23-year-old man was arrested and released without charge, it added. They will next appear at the Old Bailey on July 18.

EastEnders favourite joins rival soap – 20 years after being brutally killed off

Henna Sharma, TV Reporter Published: Invalid Date, EASTENDERS favourite makes shock return to soap world - 20 years after brutal exit. A much-loved EastEnders star is back on our screens - but this time, they're shaking things up in Summer Bay, Australia. 4 Hannah Waterman made her Walford debut back in 2000 as Laura Beale. She was best known as Ian Beale's (Adam Woodyatt) third wife. But, she was brutally killed off four years later when she went to answer the door and tripped over a toy before falling down the stairs and dying. Chaos followed as Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) found herself accused of murdering Laura - after a damning receipt turned up in Laura's flat following one of their explosive rows. The gripping death plot had fans hooked and went down as one of the most unforgettable moments in EastEnders history. Since her exit, Hannah has appeared in episodes of Doctors, The Bill, New Tricks and Holby City. She swapped the UK for Australia over adecade ago and made waves starring in Aussie dramas. Now based in Sydney, Hannah's credits include the Aussie-Indonesian hit Bali 2002. But, her new gig on Home and Away marks a proper return to the soap scene. This year, the iconic Aussie soap celebrated a whopping 35 years on air, with special reruns on a dedicated channel to mark the milestone. Forgotten soap star shows off huge £27million LA mansion after quitting fame and marrying a multimillionaire Home and Away first hit screens on January 17, 1988. Channel 5 snapped up the rights in 2000 - and they've been pumping out fresh episodes ever since. A source said: 'Hannah moved to Australia years ago for a new life but she's still acting. 'She loved dipping her toes back into the world of soap briefly and who knows it could mean she finds her way back more permanently.' Forgotten soap storylines The nation's soaps have had many gripping storylines play out over the years. However, some plots proved to be far less memorable. Here are some forgotten stories from Weatherfield, Walford and more... Coronation Street Ken and Audrey's romance (2015): After the death of wife Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride), Coronation Street original Ken Barlow (William Roache) started to move on in his life. He started to develop a spark with old friend Audrey (Sue Nicholls), with then-Corrie boss saying it would be like "Ross and Rachel". In the end, nothing ever came of it and the two remained platonic pals. Beth's bigamy (2016): Despite being happily married to Kirk (Andrew Whyment), a troubling secret came to light about Beth Tinker (Lisa George). It transpired that she had never divorced from her first husband, Darryl (Paul Loughran), father of her son Craig (Colson Smith). Although Craig and Kirk were shocked - and Beth was arrested - the storyline didn't didn't go much further. EastEnders Kat Slater's secret son (2017): Capitalising on the popularity of Kat (Jessie Wallace) and Alfie (Shane Richie), the two received a spin-off back in 2017. Titled 'Redwater', it saw the two travel to Ireland where they met long-lost son Luke, now called Dermott Dolan, played by Oisín Stack. Despite the high-tension events during Redwater, Kat seems to have put the experience behind her as Dermott's not been mentioned since. Alfie's brain tumour (2015): Having learned in 2015 that he had a brain tumour, Alfie kept the news from Kat until their trip to Ireland. At the time, actor Shane Ritchie revealed fans would see a change in Alfie as he battled the illness. It would appear that at some point after leaving the Square, was told the tumour was non-malignant. By the time Alfie returned in 2022, fans were left confused over what had happened to the storyline. Kathy and Buster's affair (2016): In 2016, Walford legend Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) fell into the arms of convict Buster Briggs, played by Karl Howman. Buster was the long-time lover of Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) and fathered both her sons - Mick (Danny Dyer) and Dean (Matt Di Angelo). When Buster left, he begged Kathy to join him, but she refused for the sake of her family. Meanwhile Buster didn't even stop to say goodbye to Shirley before exiting with a broken heart. Fans expected a showdown between the two women, but this never came to pass. Emmerdale Jacob's OCD (2016): After his dad, David (Matthew Wolfenden), was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2016, Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) developed Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This manifested in the form of cleaning. Jacob's OCD made a brief return one year on, after David had another scare after finding a lump. Jacob frantically searched the bins for a 'lucky coin' that had accidentally been thrown away. Despite stressful situations - such as being groomed by his teacher Maya, losing his fiancee Leanna to a serial killer, dealing with mum Leyla's drug addiction, and surviving a stabbing - the condition doesn't appear to have returned. Marlon and Charity's fling (2003): Few fans would likely remember few will remember the one-night stand between Charity (Emma Atkins) and Marlon (Mark Charnock) in 2003. The pair slept together when Charity was staying with Marlon while still under suspicion for husband Chris's supposed "murder". Hollyoaks Alex Browning's revenge plot (2014): Fans expected a confrontation when Dr Browning's son Alex (Ojan Genc) mer stepmum Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe). After all, Mercedes, with Cindy Cunningham (Stephanie Waring) and Lindsey Butterfield (Sophie Austin) had murdered Alex's dad, double-murderer Dr Paul Browning, after he kidnapped and attacked his new wife. In fact, the soap teased Alex would seek revenge for his father's death upon arriving. However, he instead gave Cindy's son Hilton (his half-brother) a life-saving transplant, became his godfather, and leaving the village soon after. The new role comes three years after Hannah tied the knot to former The Bill star husband Huw Higginson. Huw is most notable for his ten-year role in The Bill as PC George Garfield. Huw posted a celebratory shot showing their special day in October 2022 as they posed with their son Jack, 11, on a boat in Sydney. The Bill actor gushed in his caption: "Got married to my love yesterday. We had the best of days." Hannah can be seen gazing lovingly at her spouse as they celebrated their special day. She wore a patterned, long-sleeve blue frock - perhaps as her something blue - complete with gold strappy sandals and a navy pashmina. She clutched a bouquet of cream flowers and accessorised with a pair of sunglasses. The happy couple made the move to Australia in 2014. It came after Hannah married fellow EastEnders star Ricky Groves in 2006. But, the pair separated in 2010 and divorced in 2014. 4 4

Inspirational burns survivor Turia Pitt reveals new career move after being forced to change her life as she was 'pushing her own needs aside'

Burns survivor Turia Pitt has launched her new book. The Aussie athlete, who was tragically caught in a grassfire while competing in a 100km ultra-marathon in 2011, has released her latest project titled Selfish, which examines 'how to unlearn the rules that are breaking you'. Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, the 37-year-old revealed that she thought the word 'selfish' was in need of a rebrand, encouraging people to empower themselves and take the right measures to avoid burnout. 'We're told that being selfish is bad. That we should always think of others, put everyone else first, push our own needs aside,' she wrote in the post's caption. 'I bought into that story. And it led me straight to burnout. This is the book I wish I had during that time.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. She went on to say that she wrote the book for people who have ever felt 'stretched too thin, lost, or like you're living by someone else's rules.' Selfish, which is Turia's fifth book, is set to hit shelves in October but can be pre-ordered now. In 2023, it was revealed that the much-anticipated movie about Pitt starring Home and Away actress Tammin Sursok had stalled. In 2019, Tammin announced she was set to play the courageous athlete who sustained horrific burn injuries to 64 percent of her body in a wildfire 14 years ago. But Turia told The Daily Telegraph that further talks with the US-based actress had been put off. 'That was on the cards but not at the moment,' the mother of two said of the proposed biopic. She added: 'It is not something that is at the top of my priority list. Every day, I am not like, ''let's try and get this movie made''. I am not doing that at all.' 'Whether or not a film gets made, I don't really think it is in my control. 'I think I would be (involved),' she said. 'That would be really weird if someone made a movie and I just saw it on the TV. That would be quite strange.' In 2011, Turia survived against the odds after getting caught in a wildfire while competing in an ultramarathon in Western Australia. The Celebrity Apprentice star was left with horrific burns and later became a motivational speaker. In 2023, she opened up about the aftermath of the tragedy 11 years on, and said she 'wanted to die' during the early stages of her hospitalisation. Fortunately, Turia found the will to live and she went on to become a successful motivational speaker who has shared her story with thousands of people. Meanwhile, Sursok is best known to viewers for her role as the character of Dani Sutherland in Home in Away. The South African-born Australian star appeared in the iconic soap from 2000 to 2004.
