‘Game, set, matchmaker'? The US Open gets into the dating game

People crowding the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre during the US Open semi-finals in New York on Sept 12, 2024.
– Last week, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) made an unexpected announcement. The US Open, one of the sport's four Grand Slam tournaments, will be inserting itself in the saturated world of reality-show dating.
The announcement raised a few eyebrows and set off widespread online chatter that is best encapsulated on Instagram by professional tennis player and US Open contender Donna Vekic, who said: 'Wait what?'
According to a statement from the USTA, the tournament will host its own reality series, set at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in Queens. The eight-episode series, called 'Game, Set, Matchmaker,' will be filmed the week before the event begins in late August. It will air on YouTube during the tournament.
The bachelorette at the centre of the series is Ilana Sedaka, a 'tennis-savvy' 24-year-old former figure-skating champion and Pilates teacher, who was born and raised in Long Island and now lives in Miami. She will be matched with seven men, and will go on dates that will include playing games and exploring the tennis centre. A contestant will be sent home at the end of each episode.
'My hope is to bring a little joy, a little chaos and a whole lot of realness to the court,' Sedaka said in a news release. The USTA did not divulge how Sedaka was chosen or share any details on the male contestants.
The decision to film a dating show – and the sponsorships it drew from Dobel Tequila and Moet & Chandon – illustrates that, at the end of the day, 'sports is a business,' said Marsha-Gaye Knight, an assistant professor at the Preston Robert Tisch Institute for Global Sport at New York University. Knight added that 'sport and culture are very intertwined,' whether that's tennis, basketball or football.
'Let's be honest, a lot of people watch tennis because Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are there,' she said.
Basketball star Stephen Curry, actress Tina Fey and Vogue's global editorial director, Anna Wintour, all attended the 2024 US Open.
The other Grand Slams, which are held in London, Paris and Melbourne, Australia, consistently draw their own star-studded audiences, too. And celebrity fashion choices at the games become social media catnip for their fans, Knight said.
At a moment when shows like the 'Love Island' franchises, 'The Bachelor' and 'Love Is Blind' seem to have overtaken cultural conversation, putting on a dating show is an attempt by the USTA to bolster the sport's cultural cachet beyond tennis purists.
'We are trying to attract an entirely new audience, reaching fans at the intersection of tennis, pop culture and entertainment,' a spokesperson for the association said in an e-mailed statement.
The USTA has also been trying to boost participation in tennis. According to research conducted by the association, 1 in 12 Americans – about 26 million people – played tennis in 2024, which is the highest it has been in five years.
That makes it among the most popular sports in the United States; recent research found that 28 million Americans play basketball and just over 15 million play baseball.
Despite that level of participation, professional tennis still draws a far smaller viewing audience than football and basketball in the United States, according to a recent market research report , and Generation Z, Knight added, simply is not watching sports on television as much as previous generations .
'The US Open realises that for them to appeal to new audiences and tap into new sectors, they have to go where audiences are,' Knight said. 'Audiences are no longer chasing sports; we have to now chase our audiences.' NYTIMES

Novak Djokovic withdraws from Cincinnati Open, Netizen says "I think it's a bad decision"

OHIO, U.S.A.: Top athlete Novak Djokovic has recently withdrawn from the 2025 Cincinnati Open, the only remaining tournament before the upcoming US Open. The Cincinnati Open is the seventh ATP Masters 1000 event of the season, and the final event of the North American hard-court swing before another Grand Slam. The Serbian athlete has not yet played in any major competitions since Wimbledon. Moreover, this will be the second consecutive year Djokovic will miss the event, and he will not have any more matches before the main draw of the US Open on August 24. The Cincinnati Open will happen from Aug 7 to 18. On social media, The Tennis Letter shared the news and stated: 'Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from Cincinnati. Looks like he will not play any lead up hard court event ahead of the U.S. Open.' Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from Cincinnati. Looks like he will not play any lead up hard court event ahead of the U.S. Open. — The Tennis Letter (@TheTennisLetter) August 4, 2025 Netizens expressed their thoughts and opinions in the comments. One netizen remarked: 'He had a great opportunity to retire with grace and honour at Wimbledon 2025. It's a shame to see a Tennis player of his stature desperately chasing his 25th major. Looks really bad the way he gets owned by Sinner. It's not just his body/age; it's his game and tennis that is slow and obsolete. Hope he gathers the courage to leave in Melbourne 2026.' Another netizen stated: ' Surprising move by Novak. Skipping all the hard-court lead-ups is a big risk, but he knows how to prepare for the big stage. All eyes on the US Open now.' One more netizen declared: 'I think it's a bad decision. I think he needs match play to stay sharp, and I think it helps to collect as much data as you can against the likes of Sinner and Alcaraz.' Djokovic's 2025 season Unfortunately, Djokovic has been approaching his match appearances in an unusual manner this season, giving more importance to giving his body enough rest, recovery, and training. Currently, Djokovic is ranked World No. 6, with a record of 26-9. He won the Geneva Open last May, which allowed him to reach his 100th career singles title. At this year's Wimbledon, he was able to mark his 100th match win at the iconic grass-court Grand Slam when he defeated Miomir Kecmanovic and managed to win nine games in a row during the match. During this win, Djokovic expressed: 'Wimbledon is a favourite and a dream tournament of not just myself but the majority of players.' 'Growing up, most kids dream of winning here, and I've been blessed to do that many times here. Any history I make in my favourite tournament… I'm blessed,' he added. Djokovic hoped to win his 25th Grand Slam title this year; however, when he lost to Sinner at this year's Wimbledon semi-finals, he expressed that the chances were now diminished. 'Did you have to go this far?' Malaysia's TV3 slammed after Bella Astillah made to present award to actress in ex-husband's scandal

Malaysian broadcaster TV3 and entertainment programme Melodi are under fire after the audience witnessed a messy turn of events during their award show Anugerah Melodi Terhangat 2025 (2025 Melodi Hottest Awards) on Aug 3. Singer-actress Bella Astillah, 31, was on stage to present the award for Hottest Female Celebrity alongside her boyfriend, 32-year-old politician Syed Saddiq. When the former unfolded the result slip, there was a long pause as she laughed awkwardly. "This one... I know this one very well," she remarked. The winner? Actress Sophia Albarakbah, whom Bella had publicly called out in 2023 for allegedly flirting with her husband at the time, Singaporean actor Aliff Aziz. Bella handed Sophia the award without a glance and swiftly turned to walk away, and angry netizens flooded the comments section of Melodi's Instagram posts. [embed] "I'm boycotting TV3 and Melodi. Definitely won't see the show again after this," said one netizen. "You must've thought it was funny right? You were bored and there was nothing else to make a controversy out of. Don't be so childish... Did you have to go this far?" another questioned. Netizens also went on X to express their distaste towards what happened under the award show's hashtag. One remarked: "Just looking for cheap publicity. Shame on you." Others expressed their sympathy for Bella, whom they felt had looked anxious and uncomfortable. Bella also reportedly did not attend a scheduled interview with the media after the event. Sophia and Bella's assistant speaks out Regarding netizens who believed they saw tension between the two women on stage, Sophia, 32, reportedly said she didn't take the comments to heart. She added she didn't feel like she was being mocked by Bella, reported NST. "Maybe it was just her way of saying it, because she does know me. It was her delivery, that's all." Meanwhile, Bella's assistant Niel Rafeq spoke out in support of her. "Only her closest friends know what she did to Bella back then. That was not Bella's [usual] way of handing an award but perhaps it happened that way because the person gave her trauma. She was shaking because she's traumatised," he said in an Instagram Story. Aliff, now 34, and Bella got married in 2016 and split in 2019 but reconciled the following year. They have two children. In 2023, Sophia and Aliff were co-stars in the drama Ku Akad Kau Dengan Bismillah. Back then, Bella alleged that Sophia flirted with Aliff and would call him up to eight times a day. She also revealed text messages between herself and Sophia and claimed that the latter apologised for "accidentally falling in love" with Aliff. Aliff would later have a publicised scandal with his Terjerat co-star Ruhainies in 2024, leading to his second divorce from Bella in June the same year. [[nid:720945]] syarifahsn@
