The Moroccan women's national football team drew 2-2 with Zambia on Saturday evening at the Rabat Olympic Stadium, in their opening match of Group A at the 2024 Africa Women's Cup of Nations (AWCON), hosted in Morocco.
The Lionesses of the Atlas were caught off guard by an early goal from Barbra Banda in the first minute, but the team, coached by Spain's Jorge Vilda, remained unfazed. They pushed forward to level the score, with early chances from Nouhaila Benzina (4') and Ghizlane Chebbak (5').
Their efforts were rewarded in the 12th minute, when Ibtissam Jraidi converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review.
The equalizer boosted the confidence of the Moroccan side, who took control of the game and looked to go ahead. But it was Zambia who struck next, with Racheal Kundananji finding the net in the 27th minute.
Zambia kept the pressure on with long balls behind the Moroccan defense, nearly breaking through again before halftime, but goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi came up big in a one-on-one with Barbra Banda in stoppage time (45+1').
After the break, the Lionesses of the Atlas played more boldly in attack, particularly down the flanks. Substituting Yasmin M'Rabet, Sanaa Mssoudy (63') brought fresh energy and helped stretch the Zambian defense.
Morocco looked more dangerous in the second half, creating several chances thanks to the lively Sanaa Mssoudy and the ever-reliable Fatima Tagnaout. Their persistence paid off when team captain Ghizlane Chebbak scored the equalizer in the 87th minute, bringing the score to 2-2.
The opening ceremony of the 2024 Women's AFCON, held from July 5 to 26 in Morocco, featured a dazzling sound and light show, complete with fireworks. The highlight of the night was a performance by Moroccan singer Jaylann, who electrified the crowd with her latest hit.
The match was attended by prominent figures including CAF President Patrice Motsepe; Morocco's Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports, Mohamed Saad Berrada; Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid; FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa; and other CAF officials.

Vilda: Morocco's Draw Against Zambia ‘Is a Good Result'

Morocco's women's national team opened their 2024 WAFCON campaign with a 2-2 draw against Zambia on Saturday. After the final whistle, Morocco coach Jorge Vilda took a moment to thank his players, crediting them for standing their ground against what he described as 'a solid team.' He pointed to the squad's second-half performance as a turning point, noting their ability to raise the tempo and respond under pressure. 'They kept a good rhythm, especially in the second half, in a match played at high intensity,' he said. 'The substitutions helped us get back into it and draw level. This team will improve with every match.' Vilda showed no disappointment in the result. On the contrary, he called the draw a positive outcome. 'A draw remains a good result,' he said, 'and we'll aim for a win in the matches to come.' The coach showed respect for the Zambian side, calling them 'a strong team with great players.' He admitted that opening games often carry a different weight but said Morocco showed it could play solid football against tough opposition. Across the field, Zambia coach Nora Häuptle reflected on the match as a tough battle that left room for improvement. 'We had several chances,' she said, 'but we should have managed our strong spells better.' Häuptle gave credit to Morocco's second-half dominance, noting that their control of the ball helped shift the momentum. 'The Moroccan players were very good,' she said. 'They controlled possession in the second half, which allowed them to equalize.' Despite the late comeback, Häuptle expressed satisfaction with her team's overall showing. 'We played against a good team. They had strong players who took the upper hand late in the game,' she said. 'We'll need to adjust a few things to approach the next matches more calmly.' Hamdallah Out of Al-Hilal After Shortest Loan Spell

Saudi club Al-Hilal have reportedly reached an agreement to end Moroccan striker Abderrazak Hamdallah's loan deal just days after announcing his signing. According to Saudi outlet Arriyadiyah, the club and Hamdallah mutually agreed to part ways less than a week into the six-month deal. The striker had joined from Al-Shabab ahead of Al-Hilal's Club World Cup quarter-final clash against Brazil's Fluminense. Hamdallah, 34, came on as a substitute in that match and played only 25 minutes, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for Al-Hilal. The short-term contract included a clause allowing either party to end the agreement at any time. Reports suggest he will now join Al Shabab's pre-season training camp ahead of the new Saudi Pro League season. Al Hilal are said to have appreciated Hamdallah's willingness to join at short notice and are keen to end the contract amicably to avoid any financial disputes. Manager Simone Inzaghi reportedly did not see the Moroccan forward as part of his long-term plans and opted to exclude him from preparations for the Saudi Super Cup in August. Divided Moroccan Map Airs During WAFCON Opening, CAF Issues Apology

A major controversy erupted this week after Morocco's national sports channel aired a promotional video showing a divided map of the country during the opening of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Saturday in Rabat. The advertisement was for Russian betting company '1XBET,' whose operations Moroccan authorities deem illegal. The commercial featured a map of Morocco that excludes its southern provinces, triggering swift backlash and demands for accountability. The incident was broadcast by Arryadia, a channel under the National Broadcasting and Television Company (SNRT), which is subject to strict broadcasting and advertising codes. These rules require all national broadcasters to screen content thoroughly, particularly when it involves unauthorized companies or potentially sensitive materials. Observers condemned the broadcast as a serious breach of national standards. Many considered the offense twofold: not only did the ad promote a company whose activities are outside Morocco's legal framework, it also undermined the country's territorial integrity by depicting a cut-out map. CAF apologizes In a statement issued in response to public criticism, Arryadia clarified its position regarding the controversial advertisement aired during the opening of the 2024 WAFCON. The channel stated that the promotional video was not produced or selected by its team but was part of the official international feed provided by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). 'The segment in question is part of the official international signal broadcast by the Confederation of African Football as part of the live coverage of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations matches,' the channel explained. 'Arryadia does not intervene in the content of this live signal, as it merely relays the broadcast as provided by the organizing body to all stations airing the event.' The channel also noted that CAF acknowledged the error and addressed the matter directly with Morocco's National Broadcasting and Television Company. 'The Confederation of African Football presented an official apology to the National Broadcasting and Television Company, accepting full responsibility for this unfortunate incident,' the statement read. CAF has reportedly pledged to correct the advertisement and prevent similar incidents in the future. 'It has committed to correcting the promotional clip in question and ensuring such mistakes do not happen again,' Arryadia added. Tags: CAFMoroccoMorocco divided mapmorocco mapWAFCONWestern sahara
