159 UiTM Sabah students receive RM500 aid under MOHE-PTPTN MADANI
KOTA KINABALU: A total of 159 financially disadvantaged students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sabah received one-off financial assistance of RM500 each today. The aid was disbursed under the MOHE-PTPTN MADANI Education Assistance Programme, a collaboration between the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) and the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN). Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir emphasised the programme's role in supporting students from low-income backgrounds. 'This initiative ensures that eligible students can access quality education regardless of financial constraints, aligning with MOHE and PTPTN's commitment to strengthening higher education in Malaysia,' he said during the presentation ceremony at UiTM Sabah. The RM79,500 allocation was contributed by various parties through PTPTN and distributed to deserving students. Zambry also encouraged parents to open National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN) accounts early for their children's future education needs. 'Starting savings from birth allows gradual accumulation, which can later fund higher education,' he added. Since its launch in 2022, the MOHE-PTPTN MADANI programme has disbursed RM981,000 to 1,962 students across 16 public universities. - Bernama

NDP 2025: Tank that bumped into traffic light had faulty part
A Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) tank that bumped into a traffic light during a National Day Parade (NDP) National Education show was found to have a faulty component that led to the loss of steering and braking power. Speaking to the media at an NDP media event on July 8, Colonel David Kwek, the co-chairman of the NDP 2025 Heartland Celebrations Committee, said preliminary investigations show that the incident resulted from "an isolated component" on the Leopard 2SG main battle tank (L2SG). "Out of an abundance of caution, we are doing more detailed reviews and the L2SG will resume its participation in the NDP mobile column and the heartland celebrations after all the necessary safety checks and clearances are completed," he said. The accident happened on July 5 during an NDP National Education show - a preview of the parade primarily for students. A video of the incident showed the tank unable to stop and bumping into a nearby traffic light when it made a right turn outside Parliament House and the Supreme Court. No injuries were reported and the tank remained within the cordoned area, away from the public. The accident did minor damage to the traffic light, which was left askew, but which has since been repaired. The tank is part of a mobile column, where military hardware is displayed, for NDP 2025. The Ministry of Defence earlier said the L2SG tank had experienced a technical issue and that the accident came after the mobile column segment of the parade. Col Kwek said the safety and well-being of the public and the crew are of paramount importance. The Straits Times has asked the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) whether this was the first time the component had experienced failure and on the expected duration of the checks. Mindef said it will give more details after the checks are done.

Morocco and Zambia draw in thrilling Women's AFCON opener in Rabat
The Moroccan women's national football team drew 2-2 with Zambia on Saturday evening at the Rabat Olympic Stadium, in their opening match of Group A at the 2024 Africa Women's Cup of Nations (AWCON), hosted in Morocco. The Lionesses of the Atlas were caught off guard by an early goal from Barbra Banda in the first minute, but the team, coached by Spain's Jorge Vilda, remained unfazed. They pushed forward to level the score, with early chances from Nouhaila Benzina (4') and Ghizlane Chebbak (5'). Their efforts were rewarded in the 12th minute, when Ibtissam Jraidi converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review. The equalizer boosted the confidence of the Moroccan side, who took control of the game and looked to go ahead. But it was Zambia who struck next, with Racheal Kundananji finding the net in the 27th minute. Zambia kept the pressure on with long balls behind the Moroccan defense, nearly breaking through again before halftime, but goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi came up big in a one-on-one with Barbra Banda in stoppage time (45+1'). After the break, the Lionesses of the Atlas played more boldly in attack, particularly down the flanks. Substituting Yasmin M'Rabet, Sanaa Mssoudy (63') brought fresh energy and helped stretch the Zambian defense. Morocco looked more dangerous in the second half, creating several chances thanks to the lively Sanaa Mssoudy and the ever-reliable Fatima Tagnaout. Their persistence paid off when team captain Ghizlane Chebbak scored the equalizer in the 87th minute, bringing the score to 2-2. The opening ceremony of the 2024 Women's AFCON, held from July 5 to 26 in Morocco, featured a dazzling sound and light show, complete with fireworks. The highlight of the night was a performance by Moroccan singer Jaylann, who electrified the crowd with her latest hit. The match was attended by prominent figures including CAF President Patrice Motsepe; Morocco's Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports, Mohamed Saad Berrada; Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid; FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa; and other CAF officials.

NDP National Education show: Tank collides into traffic light
Mobile columns - where a country's military hardware such as tanks are displayed during celebrations such as Singapore's National Day Parade (NDP) - often attract attention, awe and admiration from members of the public. However, one tank garnered more attention than its operators bargained for during a National Day Parade (NDP) National Education show on July 5. While making a right turn outside of Parliament House and the Supreme Court, the leopard tank ended up bumping into a nearby traffic light. The video, which was posted at about 9.55pm on July 5, had garnered 472,000 views within 10 hours. It also amassed 2,400 likes and 738 comments as of 9am on July 6. The NDP, which marks Singapore's 60 years as an independent nation, will take place at the Padang on Aug 9. Tank experienced technical issue: Mindef In response to queries, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said on July 6 that a Leopard 2SG Main Battle Tank (L2SG) experienced a technical issue at 7.22pm on July 5. "This resulted in an incident along North Bridge Road, where the tank came into contact with a traffic light," the ministry said, adding that the accident came after the mobile column segment of the parade. No injuries were reported during the incident and the tank remained within the cordoned area, away from the public. Mindef said the L2SG was travelling within the speed limit of 20kmh when the incident took place. "The tank crew responded in accordance with standard operating procedures and the L2SG was safely recovered with no damage to the vehicle," it added. The affected traffic light stand sustained minor damage, but has since been repaired by Mindef, the NDP 2025 committee, and Land Transport Authority (LTA). Investigations are ongoing. 'Tank-ful no one is hurt' Many netizens saw the collision as a minor hiccup and called for others to be more empathetic towards the tank driver. Facebook user Chen WL commented: "Guys, have a little heart. He's probably a NSF (full-time national serviceman) earning minimum allowance... Let's hope the unit or the RSM (regimental sergeant major) won't tekan the poor kid too much..." Another user, Mr Low Beng Keat, said that accidents such as these are why rehearsals, previews, and dry runs are performed. "If there is a mistake, get up and move on, learn and be mindful the next time. No big deal, don't take it too hard on our soldiers guarding and defending on our homeland," he wrote.
