At least 2 dead, several injured in stampede at UP temple after electric current spread triggers panic
During the 'jalabhishek' ritual at the Avsaaneshwar temple in the Haidergarh area, monkeys had damaged an electric wire, which caused current to flow through three tin sheds in the temple complex. The electric current triggered panic, resulting in a stampede in the temple premises, Barabanki District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi said.
The incident occurred during the holy month of Shravan on Monday when devotees had gathered at the temple for the ritual which involves offering water to the deity.
Two devotees including Prashant (22) from the Mubarakpura village succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the Trivediganj Community Health Centre (CHC), officials said.
A total of 10 injured persons were brought to Trivediganj CHC, of whom five were referred to higher medical centres due to their critical condition.
Meanwhile, 26 injured devotees are being treated at the Haidergarh CHC, and one of them has been referred for advanced care due to serious injuries.
Following the incident, district and police officials reached the spot to manages the chaos at the temple and surrounding areas. Devotees later resumed their worship at the temple.
An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.

According to the police, the accused have been identified as Schaefer Javin Jacob (41), a resident of California, currently staying near Mukai Chowk in Pune, and Steven Vijay Kadam (46), a resident of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area. Pimpri Chinchwad Police also apprehended a minor for his alleged role in the incident and later handed him over to his parents, news agency PTI reported. As per the complainant, Sunny Bansilal Danani, Jacob and Kadam tried to convert him by visiting his residence on July 27, police said. 'They claimed that converting to Christianity would bring Danani peace, prosperity, and mental well-being. They allegedly told the complainant that Jesus Christ is the only God and that other deities and religions are fictitious," said a police officer. The police state that the two allegedly offered the complainant financial help in exchange for converting to Christianity. Pimpri Police registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and the Foreigners Act on a complaint lodged by Danani. 'Both the accused have been arrested, and the minor involved in the case was handed over to his parents," said the officer. Meanwhile, Jalaluddin Shah alias Chhangur Baba, who is accused of masterminding a large-scale religious conversion racket, is facing investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The 78-year-old, who is popularly known as Changur Baba, started as a taweez and gemstone seller, travelling between villages on a bicycle. He reinvented himself as 'Peer Baba' or 'Hazrat Baba Jalaluddin', in 2015, claiming to be a Sufi preacher. A resident of Rehra Ma village in Balrampur, he used his rising influence to target vulnerable individuals, often widowers, with promises of support in exchange for conversion. Two kanwariyas killed, 1 injured after truck hits motorbike in Moradabad
Moradabad (UP), Jul 28 (PTI) Two kanwariyas were on Monday killed and another was seriously injured when a speeding truck ran over their motorcycle here while they were returning from Haridwar with holy Ganga water, police said. Akash (19), Madhav Ram (20) and Amar Singh (20), all residents of Karua Tal village under Aonla police station in Bareilly district, had gone to Haridwar for the Kanwar Yatra on Sunday. The trio was returning on a single motorcycle carrying Gangajal when the incident took place near the Parag factory in Moradabad. A fast-moving truck reportedly rammed into their motorcycle, killing Akash and Madhav Ram on the spot. Amar Singh sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the district hospital, the police said. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene following the accident and efforts are underway to trace him, they added. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Govt says 12 helicopter crashes killed 30 people in last 5 years
New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) The government on Monday said 12 accidents involving scheduled registered helicopters have occurred, killing 30 people in the last five years, with seven of them taking place in Uttarakhand. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol told the Rajya Sabha, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated additional surveillance and safety audits of helicopter operations for the Chardham Yatra. As many as 12 accidents have occurred to Indian scheduled registered helicopters during the last five years. These resulted in 30 fatalities, according to a written reply. Out of them, seven happened in Uttarakhand, four in Maharashtra and one in Chhattisgarh. DGCA has reiterated safety norms for helicopter operations in the country, including Chardham Yatra, focusing on access control, improving parking arrangements, regulating slot allocations, enhancing pilot training, and ensuring strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), the minister said.
