Italy will qualify for the T20 World Cup 2026 if they manage to get the better of the Netherlands in their last league match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier.
The Italy men's cricket team is on the cusp of creating history. The European team stunned Scotland by 12 runs on Wednesday (July 9) at The Hague to take a giant step towards qualifying for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. The 2026 edition of the men's T20 World Cup will be played in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
With a total of five points after three matches played so far in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2025, Italy top the points table. If the Joe Burns-led side manage to get the better of the Netherlands in their last league match on Friday (July 11) at Sportpark Westvliet in The Hague, then they will qualify for the T20 World Cup for the first time ever.
And even if Italy lose the match against the Netherlands team, then also they will still have a chance to progress. For that, they just have to make sure that they finish above Scotland and Jersey in the points table.
As of now, Jersey and Scotland have 3 points each to their credit, and they will face each other on Friday. The winner of that game will have a chance to match Italy's tally of 5 points. But still, Italy can finish above them due to a better net run rate and seal the deal.
According to Italy captain Burns, it feels 'very surreal" after his side took a major step towards qualifying for their first T20 World Cup.
35-year-old Burns, who played 23 Tests for Australia from 2014 to 2020 before pledging his allegiance to Italy last year, as per BBC Sport, said that his side 'technically cannot celebrate too hard at the moment" after the win in the Hague and acknowledged 'there's still a big game on Friday."
'I am really proud of the boys for this moment. To come and beat Scotland, who are a fantastic team, is a nice reward for sacrifices our players, staff, and federation have made," said Burns.
'Hopefully this is the stepping stone for a lot to come. It's a very emotional group at the moment. Being on the verge of a World Cup? It's very surreal."
In the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup, USA, Canada, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, and Nepal made their debut, and USA even went on to stun the heavyweights Pakistan at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.

R Ashwin hails India captain Shubman Gill's 'natural flair' during press conferences: 'He is talking like who he is'

Ashwin also described Gill, who is leading India for the first time in Test cricket in the ongoing tour of England, as someone who does not really need media training like a majority of other players. read more Ravichandran Ashwin has praised Shubman Gill for his composure during press conferences in England, where he is playing his maiden Test series as captain. Reuters/PTI Spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin heaped praise on India captain Shubman Gill for his composure during press conferences despite leading India for the first time in the Test format in the ongoing tour of England. Ashwin praised the 25-year-old for his 'natural flair' and for being himself while speaking to reporters, in addition to marshalling his troops on the field. 'Shubman has a natural flair. I was watching his press conference, and I immediately found that he is not putting on a show. He is talking like who he is. He is leading the team according to his natural self and skills,' the former India off-spinner, who retired midway during the tour of Australia in December, said on his YouTube channel. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Gill doing what he believes in' Ashwin added that it is the captain who is often targeted by the press during overseas tours, which more often than not has a negative impact on the rest of the team. He also added that while a majority of players are coached on the art of facing the media, that doesn't appear to be the case with Gill, who had led Gujarat Titans to the Indian Premier League playoffs earlier this year in his second season in charge. 'In overseas tours, the media tries to target the captain because if you bring the captain down, it becomes easy to bring the team down. You can get them to fall like nine pins if you go after the captain,' Ashwin continued. 'Don't take it out of context, but a lot of players are coached about what to say and what to do. That doesn't seem to be the case with Shubman Gill. He looks like a man who is doing what he believes in,' he added. The third Test at Lord's gets underway at Lord's, London on Thursday with the series currently level 1-1.

T20 World Cup Qualifier: Italy shock Scotland, close in on maiden spot in extravaganza in India, Sri Lanka

Italy cricket team celebrate after beating Scotland in the T20 World Cup Qualifier for European continent. (Image: X) Italy moved closer to qualifying for their first-ever ICC Men's T20 World Cup after securing a 12-run victory over Scotland in the Europe Regional Final. The win keeps Italy at the top of the standings with a net run rate of 1.722, positioning them favourably for qualification to the 2026 T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka. The Italian team, led by former Australian Test player Joe Burns , now needs either a victory over the Netherlands in their final match on Friday or a narrow loss combined with Jersey and Scotland failing to win their respective matches by significant margins. Italy's position in the tournament standings shows them well ahead of third-placed Jersey (0.430) and fourth-placed Scotland (-0.150) in terms of net run rate, giving them a considerable advantage heading into the final matches. "I am really proud of the boys for this moment," Burns said. "To come and beat Scotland, who are a fantastic team, is a nice reward for sacrifices our players, staff and federation have made." "Hopefully this is the stepping stone for a lot to come. It's a very emotional group at the moment. Being on the verge of a World Cup? It's very surreal." The situation requires Jersey and Scotland to adopt aggressive approaches in their earlier match to improve their net run rates and maintain their qualification hopes. Scotland's captain Richie Berrington acknowledged his team's disappointing performance against Italy while maintaining hope for qualification. "We kept ourselves in it but just didn't manage to execute at the end," he said. "A lot of the credit has to go to Italy, who out-skilled us with the ball in those conditions." "Obviously today's a tough one, but it's important we learn what we can from this game. We will be looking to come back strong." 'I will still remain employed by the company, but, operationally the baton will be handed over," he explained. Horner, who is set to be on gardening leave as part of his exit terms from the side up until the end of the year, revealed that the decision came as a surprise to him as well. Horner oversaw two stints of Red Bull domination, the first one during Sebastian Vettel's heyday and most recently Max Verstappen's stranglehold of the event, and has witnessed over a century of race wins, and pole positions, while managing to clinch a place on the podium an incredible 287 times. 'When I arrived 20 years ago, there were a few less grey hairs. I walked into a team and did not know what to expect but I was immediately welcomed and we started to build what became a powerhouse in F1," he reminisced. 'Watching and being part of this team, has been the biggest privilege of my life," Horner added. Frenchman Laurent Mekies, who was the head of Racing Bulls, is expected to serve as the CEO of Red Bull Racing following Horner's dismissal. 'A new CEO will be announced shortly. I trust him and give him my full support. My instruction to him is to look after all of you," he added. 'I have fought hard, I've done my best, I've put in a big shift and it now comes to a close," Horner signed off. view comments First Published: July 10, 2025, 10:20 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
