Frustrated commuter saves £70 on train fares by flying from Manchester to London... via Iceland

A frustrated commuter claims he saved £70 on 'ridiculous' train fares by flying to London from Manchester… via Iceland. Muscab Salad was on his way home to London after a trip to Manchester when he discovered the return train back to the capital was a whooping £130.
The 32-year-old said he found the price 'ridiculous' so went looking up other options there could be. Muscab discovered he could get a £21 Jet2 flight to Keflavík in Iceland, where he spent 18 hours sightseeing and exploring the city.
The savvy traveller said he took a £36 Play flight back to London the same evening, with the whole trip costing him a total of £57. As well as saving himself £75, he claims flying through Iceland was a bonus as he always wanted to visit.
In his viral online video documenting his trip, Muscab is seen enjoying a hot chocolate in the Icelandic town before he is off to try the country's national dish, Hákarl. The content creator said he also visited a thermal bath and spoke to the locals while walking around the city.
In his viral video, Muscab said: "I definitely recommend day trips, do it more, F the trains."
Muscab, from West London, said: "I was in Manchester and needed to get back to London. [Going via Iceland] was so much cheaper. I wanted to go to Iceland at some point so I thought I might as well do the flight route back."
He said he got the idea after seeing the price of the rail tickets. He said: "It was £130 because it's more expensive in the morning. I went in the morning and I came back in the early morning the next day.
"I needed to be in London by afternoon so I had time. In total the flight was £57. I flew there and back with budget airlines, it was literally half the price. It just makes more sense, it was so much cheaper.
"I went around the town. I had the food there, I spoke to random people. It was just a fun day out, it wasn't like a full holiday. I went to a thermal bath and had the national dish which is fermented shark. It was better than I expected."
Muscab claims the price of trains in the UK is not justified and that it is too expensive compared to European countries. The traveller said he would do a similar trip again instead of paying for the train and would recommend it to others looking to explore other cities.
Muscab said: "Train tickets in the UK are expensive, I feel like everyone knows that. Even if you book in advance it's still expensive, it's still cheaper to fly. It's cheaper to meet up in Spain than meet up in Manchester, that's how ridiculous it is.
"We have the most expensive trains in Europe, it's not justified. I would 100% do it again. Seeing another country is not a bad thing, it's a bonus.
"I'm happy I got to experience Iceland. I recommend that people travel, it's a lot cheaper than people think."
Commenters on Muscab's video have expressed their frustration over UK rail prices, while others pointed out it would have been cheaper to take a coach. One said: "Something needs to be done about the trains in the UK. It's ridiculous."
Another said: "So it's cheaper to go out of the UK than to get to another city in the UK." While one agreed saying: "£130 for a train is wild."
One person had a different suggestion advising: "Coach is a tenner, probably quicker than multiple flights and no need to go through security multiple times." Another commented: "I would have just booked a coach."

The Chase's Shaun Wallace surprises followers with move away from ITV show

Shaun Wallace will appear in a brand new ITV show The Chase star Shaun Wallace has announced a new move away from the ITV programme. Shaun, who has been one of "the chasers" on Bradley Walsh's quiz since 2009, told fans he was "very excited" to be filming for a new show called The Great Escapers. In a video posted on X, which was called Twitter, Shaun, 65, described the project as "a wonderful, exciting holiday adventure". The post read: "Very excited to be filming in Rhodes for a new show called 'The Great Escapers' with Mark @MarkLabbett and Jenny @jenlion. Looking forward to having a lot of fun with those two. Doing a spot of fitness in the sunshine, before we get going." Mark Labbett and Jenny Ryan are also experts on The Chase. However, it is understood neither Shaun, Mark or Jenny are leaving the quiz as, often, regulars on ITV entertainment programmes appear as guests on other shows. One fan gushed: "Have a swell time," while another commented: "Hope you win your episode, Shaun!" Each episode of The Great Escapers will see celebrities from different backgrounds compete to plan the best day out. Other episodes will feature stars from Coronation Street and Loose Women, among other shows and fames, it is understood. Katie Rawcliffe, Director of Entertainment and Daytime ITV said: "We've got some of ITV's best-known faces flying out to the most gorgeous destinations in this brand-new series. We can't wait to see the cast of Corrie, I'm A Celeb…, The Chase and Loose Women in all of their holiday glory!" The series will air on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player later this year, according to Shaun, known as The Dark Destroyer on The Chase, is one of the original "chasers" on the teatime show. He and Mark, 59, have appeared in each of the 18 regular series, and 14 celebrity seasons. Last month, fans of the programme were furious because it was taken off air due to ITV's coverage of Royal Ascot. The Chase missed several episodes so the broadcaster could accommodate the racing event. Loose Women was also affected, as it was taken off air for three days; Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, for the races. The Chase first graced our screens in 2009 and swiftly became a staple on ITV. It features regular contestants vying against each other, testing their general knowledge for the chance to bag a hefty cash prize.

The Swiss castle from where the Lionesses will plot a route to Euros glory

The FA looked at 23 base camp options, before settling on a luxury hotel in Zurich. ITV News Midlands Correspondent Stacey Foster and Reporter Chloe Keedy have the story The turreted hotel that the Lionesses will call home, as they prepare to defend their European title, is certainly more swanky than previous England basecamps. When Manager Sarina Wiegman and her squad check into The Dolder Grand in Zurich on Monday, their names will be added in its guest book to those of Winston Churchill, the Rolling Stones and King Charles. The five-star resort, which stands on the wooded Adlisberg mountain overlooking Lake Zurich, and where rooms usually costs around £800 a night, is certainly a cut above the anonymous chain hotel selected by the FA during the last major tournament. Two years ago, before England lost to Spain in the final of the 2023 World Cup, the Lionesses had been sequestered on a quiet stretch of Australia's sunshine coast, in the town of Terrigal (population 12,000), where the players could stroll unbothered down the beach, notwithstanding the odd TV crew. Not that England are likely to have to put up with much in the way of unwanted attention in Zurich. When ITV News contacted The Dolder Grand asking for an interview with the manager, the hotel publicist quickly said ''yes'', which changed quicker still to a ''no'', due to ''confidentiality commitments during this particularly sensitive period". This is Switzerland after all. ''We're very confident we have found another basecamp that will meet all our needs,'' said Sarina Wiegman, when the Lionesses confirmed their hotel pick back in January - and it's not hard to see why. The FA recced 23 base camp options, before settling on the Dolder Grand, with its 4,000 square meter spa complex, Michelin star dining, and palatial rooms, for the 55 players and staff. England will train at the nearby Sportanlage Au, a less grandiose set-up, run by the local authority. Crucially, this sports club is just a 20 minute drive from the hotel. And with the Lionesses playing their first two Euro 2025 fixtures at Zurich's Stadion Letzigrund, and their last group stage tie against Wales just 50 miles along the road in St Gallen, there will be no need for the onerous flights the men's team took between their golf resort in central Germany and their matches at last year's Euros. Fittingly, the Lionesses' temporary home was rebuilt in 2004 by Norman Foster, the legendary British architect responsible for Wembley Stadium. Can their sumptuous Swiss surroundings help Wiegman's team replicate the triumph they achieved under that famous arch, three years ago?

Europe Heatwave: fire and health warnings issued across continent

The first heatwave of the summer has led European countries to issue wildfire warnings and health alerts. Near Turkey's popular western Aegean coast, hundreds of rescue workers have spent a second day fighting flames in searing heat and strong winds. Those winds are creating extreme fire risks in Greece and alerts have been issued in France, Italy and Portugal. Temperatures in Spain have broken June records with 46 celcius recorded near the border with Portugal. Here, 33.1 Celsius was recorded at Heathrow Airport in west London. Frances Read reports.
