Kelantan records 601 commercial crime cases, losses exceed RM14 million
KOTA BHARU - Kelantan recorded a total of 601 commercial crime cases were during the first five months of this year, resulting in losses amounting to RM14.1 million, according to state police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat.
He said that based on statistics comparing cases and financial losses by the modus operandi of commercial crimes, the cyber and multimedia crime category recorded the highest number of cases at 401 incidents, or 67 per cent of the total and resulting in losses amounting to RM7.47 million.
"Common cybercrimes include online fraud such as phone scams, fake purchases via social media, job scams, and love scams.
"The second highest category involves investment scam cases, the use of electronic cards, and other related crimes, with 105 cases recorded, accounting for 17.4 per cent, and losses totaling RM4.54 million,' he said at a press conference after the monthly assembly for June, held at the Kelantan contingent police headquarters here today.
Meanwhile, crimes related to finance, banking, cooperatives, and insurance recorded 81 cases (13.47 per cent), with total losses amounting to RM966,336.38.
"For cases involving forgery, embezzlement, and land-related offences, only seven cases were recorded (1.16 per cent), with losses amounting to RM85,000. Corporate cases also recorded seven cases (1.16 per cent), but with significantly higher losses of RM1.05 million,' he said.
Mohd Yusoff added that the police are intensifying awareness and prevention efforts through collaboration with relevant agencies and the public to combat the increasingly complex nature of commercial crimes.
"Over the past few months, we have seen an alarming rise in street crimes, including robbery, snatch theft, housebreaking, as well as a growing number of commercial crimes occurring through online platforms.
"Crimes such as online fraud, investment scams, and identity theft now not only result in financial losses but also impact the emotional well-being and sense of security within the community,' he said. - BERNAMA

Senior citizen killed, nine injured in Kunak-Lahad Datu van crash
KUNAK: 74-year-old substitute driver was killed and nine others injured after a van crashed at KM29 of Jalan Kunak-Lahad Datu early this morning. Perhentian boat tragedy victims to make final journey home
KUALA TERENGGANU: The bodies of a man and two children who died after a boat capsized off Pulau Perhentian will be brought to Butterworth, Penang, and Sungai Petani, Kedah, for their funerals. Dr K. Balachandran, special officer (non-Islamic affairs) to the Terengganu Menteri Besar, said the post-mortems of S. Arumugam, 40, his daughter A. Sarrvihka, 3, and another relative, V. Vennpani, 10, were completed at 4.30pm today. He said all 15 passengers in the boat were related and frequently holidayed on islands in Terengganu. "The remains of the father and daughter will be taken back to Butterworth, while Vennpani's remains will be sent to Sungai Petani," he said, according to a Bernama report. Balachandran said the 15 victims from four families arrived in Terengganu on Friday and were supposed to return today. "I am made to understand that on the night of the incident, they were on their way back from Pulau Perhentian Kecil to Perhentian Besar after dinner," he said. He added that the survivors were still in shock and traumatised by the incident. Last night, the boat carrying 15 passengers aged between three and 40, capsized during a storm. Besut police chief Superintendent Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu later said that the boat driver, who tested positive for drugs, has been arrested. Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said that the travel agency and boat operator had no licence to operate.

Bodies of Perhentian boat tragedy victims to be taken home for final rites
KUALA TERENGGANU: The remains of three family members who drowned when their boat capsized off Pulau Perhentian, Besut, on Saturday (June 28) night will be taken home to Butterworth, Penang, and Sungai Petani, Kedah, for their final rites. Special Officer (Non‑Islamic Affairs) to the Terengganu Mentri Besar, Dr K. Balachandran, said post‑mortem examinations and other formalities for S. Arumugam (40), his daughter A. Sarrvihka (three) and their relative V. Vennpani (10) were completed at about 4.30 pm Sunday. "The bodies of the father and daughter will be sent to Butterworth, while the third victim will be taken to Sungai Petani. "A family member informed us that the 15 passengers, from four related families, had arrived for a holiday last Friday and were due to travel back to Sungai Petani and Butterworth on Sunday," he said when met at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) Forensic Unit. According to Balachandran, the family had finished dinner on Pulau Perhentian Kecil and were heading to Pulau Perhentian Besar when their boat was hit by strong waves and overturned, claiming three lives. Balachandran said surviving passengers and the families of the deceased are still traumatised and have requested privacy. "They are not ready to speak to anyone, including the media, but they have expressed gratitude to all agencies and volunteers who assisted," he added. The incident occurred at about 10.30pm on Saturday. The boat was carrying 15 passengers aged between three and 40. Three people died, while one passenger remains in critical condition in HSNZ's Intensive Care Unit. - Bernama
