‘I couldn't cope with her holding her fork like a toddler'. What's your ‘ick'?
Having been mentioned on programmes such as Ally McBeal and Sex and the City and popularised by Love Island contestants in 2017, the term describes a sudden wave of revulsion towards a romantic interest, often sparked by something trivial. Now, new research from Azusa Pacific University in California suggests that this gut reaction isn't just about picky dating habits – it's an evolutionary tool.
The study, published in Personality and Individual Differences, found 75 per cent of female participants reporting instances of it compared with 57 per cent of men. Researchers argue that this is because women are biologically wired to assess potential mates for long-term compatibility more critically. The ick, they suggest, is a 'rapid rejection mechanism' – a way of instinctively weeding out unsuitable partners before things get serious.
And what are the biggest ick triggers? Some are predictable: poor hygiene, misogynistic comments, awkward social behaviour. But others are surprisingly specific: licking a finger before turning a page, using a baby voice, running after a ping-pong ball, ordering the soup of the day, a personalised number plate. One woman recalled ending things after spotting a man's 'bum cleavage' when he bent over.
For men, on the other hand, icks tend to focus more on physical appearance: too much make-up, bad fake tan, or certain fashion choices.
But is the ick always justified? Psychologists say it's a mix of instinct, personal preference and societal conditioning. Some people grow out of it, while for others, once it strikes, there's no turning back.
So, if you find yourself recoiling at your date's choice of ringtone or excessive emoji use, science says it's not just you being picky – it may be evolution doing its job.
Here, people confess the exact moment they knew their relationship was doomed:
The roll-neck deal breaker – Sarah, 33, journalist
'Met him at a press do – handsome, kind, intelligent, older and more grown up than I usually went for. He asked me out on a date, then he turned up in a roll-neck sweater. I can't explain it, but I immediately felt like I was dating an off-duty magician. I was out.'
Baby talk gone wrong – Emma, 29, lawyer
'Third date, he puts on a baby voice and says, 'Do you weally, weally want it?' when the waiter asked if we wanted dessert. It was creepy mixed with a side of psychopath. I was so horrified I just blurted out, 'Actually, no, I don't,' and practically ran out of the restaurant.'
The popcorn chewer – Becky, 31, marketing manager
' We went to the cinema, and he chewed popcorn one kernel at a time. Who does that? Ick!'
Sockless and hopeless – Jessica, 28, personal trainer
' We'd been locking eyes at the gym for weeks and he finally asked me out and I looked down to see he wasn't wearing socks with his trainers. My mind went straight to filthy toenails and slimy, sweaty feet. I made my excuses. Instant ick.'
The money mansplainer – Helen, 45, accountant
'We met on a dating app. He looked handsome in a 'Pierce Brosnan at a vineyard' kind of way. Then, over dinner, he leant in, twinkled condescendingly, and began explaining how I should get a Lifetime ISA and how, if I saved really hard, I too could one day afford a house like his. I own two houses and a holiday home in France. I let him finish his TED Talk on compound interest, smiled sweetly, and when the bill came, I paid in full – just so I could watch his face as I strolled out, never to return.'
The 'Babe' overload – Ryan, 33, journalist
'She called me 'Babe' 47 times in one dinner. Yes I counted – and then left.'
The beige chinos incident – Hannah, 27, artist
'He wore beige chinos on our first dinner date. That's it. That was the ick. Not even a rogue coffee stain or a playful cuff roll to save him – just crisp, unyielding beige. The kind that says, 'I have a favourite screwdriver,' and, 'Shall we pop to Homebase this weekend?' I saw my future flash before my eyes: Sunday afternoons discussing grout. I left before the mains arrived.'
The Porsche key ring guy – Alice, 42, PR consultant
'He had a Porsche key ring even though he drove a Golf. Ick!'
The drunk 'woo' girl – Ben, 51, doctor
'She 'wooed' at a waiter carrying a tray of cocktails, then again when a song she liked came on. The final straw? She 'wooed' at a street lamp because 'it looked lonely'.'
The filthy bathroom – Rachel, 30, events planner
' After a few romantic dates, he invited me over to his place for dinner. He'd cooked an incredible meal, everything seemed perfect – until I used his downstairs loo. It hadn't been cleaned and there were, er, marks. I made my excuses and left. Some things you can't unsee.'
The 'Careless Whisper' ringtone – Jess, 30, teacher
'He seemed completely normal, nice guy… and then his phone rang. Careless Whisper. Maybe it was ironic? Nope. He let it ring, closed his eyes, and whispered, 'Such a great song.' The ick hit me at the sax solo.'
The cutlery clash – Chris, 27, lawyer
'She held her fork in a fist like a toddler and stabbed her food. I couldn't concentrate on the conversation.'
The lip-reader – Tom, 33, IT consultant
'Her lips moved when she read her book. One night, I caught myself staring at her slow-moving lips and knew it was done.'
The mummy's boy – Jane, 45, chiropodist
'He told me his mother still did his cleaning and ironing – every week. He was 46.'

The shock casting method show bosses use to select Love Island contestants has been revealed
The shock casting method used by Love Island bosses to select contestants for the show has been revealed. It's been reported that ITV execs have admitted to using artificial intelligence as part of the casting process for the reality TV show. After the cast of the 2025 series was revealed earlier this year, fans were quick to mock the newbies as 'clones' of the previous stars, with the likes of Megan Forte Clarke being compared to 2019 islander Maura Higgins. And now The Sun reports that automated technology has been used to whittle down the thousands of applicants for the show. Speaking as ITV announced its half-year results, ITV chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall shared: 'We will use AI in any way we can to make what we do more efficient. 'And a great example of that for me from (ITV) Studios is they're using a tool where it's a smart editing assistance and it's about speed and quality. And they used it for Love Island and casting this year.' She added that the team 'rated it eight out of ten'. Meanwhile, an ITV spokesperson confirmed to MailOnline that AI was not directly used to make casting decisions, but rather to edit hundreds of hours of footage into highlight reels for the team to watch. They shared: 'It simply assists with the editing of audition tapes during the casting period. 'We get thousands and thousands of applications every year and we hold face to face auditions. 'When we get to the stage of narrowing it down to hundreds of prospective Islanders and we want to share audition highlights on a reel with the ITV commissioning team, to support the casting decision, we use the software (Quickture along with an Adobe editing programme) to edit the hundreds of hours of footage into highlight reels.' They added that the process means the casting team can 'spend more time researching' and looking for more prospective Islanders. It comes as Love Island fans have hit out at show bosses during Thursday's episode after they were left unimpressed by how Shakira Khan was given the 'villain edit'. Prior to the episode airing, It was reported that the 22-year-old threatened to quit the ITV2 dating show over the situation with Harry. A source told The Sun: 'She went to the beach hut and asked to leave the villa. 'The duty of care team were able to help her through her emotions and she decided to stay.' In the latest episode of the ITV show, the infamous Grafties returned - where contestants are shown clips on a big screen that either revive past drama or highlight hilarious moments that most of the villa hadn't seen before. The nominees for the Best Double Act award were Dejon and Helena, Toni and Shakira, and Helena and Meg. During the clips, Toni and Shakira were seen talking negatively about Meg, following movie night. After watching the gossip on the big screen, Meg said she felt that Shakira and Toni were 'fake to her face,' prompting Toni to fire back: 'So are you. You act like you never say a bad thing about anyone.' Next came Helena and Meg's clip, which, in contrast, highlighted their blossoming friendship in the villa. Toni and Shakira went on to win the award, with Shakira saying: 'We said what we said, it was after Movie Night. 'I don't know why it's so surprising, we had a scrap that night.' It comes after Love Island fans have hit out at show bosses during Thursday's episode after they were left unimpressed by how Shakira Khan was given the 'villain edit' during the Grafties Fans are now calling out show bosses for giving Shakira the 'villain edit' during the game Fans are now calling out show bosses for giving Shakira the 'villain edit' during the game. They raged on X: 'If they hurt Shakira anymore I'm literally going to stay for the credits, note down each producers name and HUNT THEM DOWN,' 'The producers convincing Shakira to stay in the villa so she could get attacked at the grafties is just evil #LoveIsland,' 'The fact we've seen Shakira be so sad, open & vulnerable recently. And now the producers are gonna paint her out to be bad with the Grafties, and make her feel even worse :(( i don't wanna watch,' 'Look at the clip they used for Meg and Helena vs the one they used for Shakira and Toni, and tell me again with a straight face that there isn't a clear agenda,' 'Why are the producers giving Shakira and Toni this bad edit!'

And Just Like That fans rejoice as Carrie and Aidan make a shocking decision about their relationship: 'It's about time!'
Fans rejoiced after Carrie Bradshaw and Aidan Shaw broke up for the third time in the latest episode of And Just Like That. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Aidan (John Corbett) have navigated a tumultuous long-distance relationship in season three, but it all came to an end in Thursday's episode nine, titled 'Present Tense.' After arguing about Aidan being jealous of Carrie's relationship with her handsome British downstairs neighbor, writer Duncan Reeves (Jonathan Cake), Aidan admits he has trust issues due to Carrie cheating on him in the past. This eventually leads a frustrated Carrie to lash out as she asks Aidan: 'Can you stop f*****g blaming me?' They later both conclude their relationship won't work out again, sharing a tearful hug before parting ways. The pair previously dated twice in seasons 3 and 4 of Sex and the City, with both attempts ultimately ending in breakups. The tense episode also had a humorous moment when Parker's real-life friend Andy Cohen made a quick cameo as he reprised his role of shoe salesman Daniel from Sex and The City. Fans rejoiced after Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Aidan Shaw (John Corbett) broke up for the third time in the latest episode of And Just Like That Fans celebrated the breakup on social media, expressing their frustration with Carrie's love interest. 'It's about time! He better not come around again!' one wrote. 'Finally!' another added while someone else chimed in writing, 'Thank God.' 'Carrie Bradshaw finally did the thing!' 'It was fun while it lasted Aiden, but it wasn't meant to be. Ever.' 'That episode was absolutely classic Carrie Bradshaw. Loved it.' 'FINALLY, we are FREE,' another fan wrote. 'Wow, does it look like Carrie got a glow up at the end after all that happened?' 'Carrie ATE this episode.' 'Thank God!!!!!!! This was just ridiculous and too damn much!!' The episode starts out with Carrie walking in on an awkward encounter between her boyfriend Aidan and her downstairs neighbor Duncan. Aidan grills Duncan about why he chooses to smoke from a pipe, before Carrie quickly makes an excuse to leave. Carrie later tells pal Seema (Sarita Choudhury) that she believes Aidan is 'threatened.' 'By Duncan?' Seema questions. 'By me,' Carrie replies. 'I cheated on him with John. It was awful,' she said, referring to her late husband John Preston, a.k.a. Mr. Big, who died from a heart attack in the first season of the Sex and the City reboot. 'He had trouble trusting me after that, and frankly he had reason not to,' she added. 'I cheated on him with cigarettes as well,' she joked. Seema then informed her that Aidan had been questioning her about Duncan in the previous episode. She advises Carrie to talk to him about the situation, but Carrie refuses. Later on Aidan interrupts Carrie and Duncan's book edition session, as he shows up unannounced. He asks her if he should get dinner started, but Carrie declines saying she and Duncan are busy working. When he asks her when she'll be done, she tells him she is unsure and to start without her. However, he tells her he will wait for her. When Carrie finally returns she finds that Aidan is still awake. She thanks him for 'being so understanding' and tries to cuddle up to him in bed. However he tells her, 'No, get away from me. You smell like smoke.' He then tells her to 'go take a shower.' The episode starts out with Carrie walking in on an awkward encounter between her boyfriend Aidan and her downstairs neighbor Duncan Carrie later tells pal Seema (Sarita Choudhury) that she believes Aidan is 'threatened' by her. 'I cheated on him with John. It was awful,' she said, referring to her late husband John Preston, a.k.a. Mr. Big, who died from a heart attack in the first season of the Sex and the City reboot The couple argue before going to sleep, and later continue bickering in the morning, after Aidan told Carrie to 'get away' from him because she smelled like smoke Carrie accuses him of trying to figure out if there's something going on between her and Duncan. 'This is such bullsh**t, Carrie,' he responds They later meet up for lunch, and Aidan admits that he has 'trust issues.' The talk erupts into another fight, as Carrie accuses him of sounding 'jealous' and 'suspicious' 'I can't give you any more than I have, and it wasn't enough. And there's all the family stuff. I'm sorry, but there is,' Carrie tells him before they break up A teary-eyed Aidan tells her, 'I'm sad. I really thought we were gonna make it this time.' Carrie replies with a shaking voice, 'Yeah, I'm sad too' Later on in her apartment Carrie takes down all the postcards Aidan sent her from Virginia 'The woman had thought that she and her love were very present, but now realized they were still locked in the past, which meant, of course, that they had no future,' Carrie says in a voiceover at the end of the episode After Carrie showers and goes to sleep in a different bedroom. Aidan follows her and they bicker, before she kicks him out of the room. In the morning, he tries to play it off while making breakfast, but Carrie is still upset. 'Is this because I talked to him?' Aidan asks. 'I distinctly asked you not to,' she responds. They continue to argue until Carrie accuses him of trying to figure out if there's something going on between her and Duncan. 'This is such bullsh**t, Carrie,' he responds. 'Aidan, you're worried about me and another man,' she says before storming out. They later meet up for lunch, and Aidan admits that he has 'trust issues' with Carrie and other men. The talk erupts into another fight, as Carrie accuses him of sounding 'jealous' and 'suspicious.' 'Well, can you f*****g blame me?' he asks. 'Can you stop f*****g blaming me?' she responds, before storming off. Aidan follows her, as she questions, 'How is it possible that I haven't earned your trust by now?' 'I have done everything to show you how fully committed I am to you. I have moved mountains and apartments. I have agreed to arrangements that even you yourself couldn't live up to! I was 100% in.' 'Was or are? Because you just said I was 100% in. So, is it was or are you still 100% in?' he questions. 'Was,' Carrie slowly replies. 'I can't give you any more than I have, and it wasn't enough. And there's all the family stuff. I'm sorry, but there is.' 'I need a hundred,' Aidan says. 'So do I,' Carrie responds. A teary-eyed Aidan tells her, 'I'm sad. I really thought we were gonna make it this time.' 'Yeah, I'm sad too,' Carrie replies with a shaking voice. They then share a hug. Later on in her apartment Carrie takes down all the postcards Aidan sent her from Virginia. At the end of the episodes she meets her pals for dinner. 'The woman had thought that she and her love were very present, but now realized they were still locked in the past, which meant, of course, that they had no future,' she said in a voiceover, before the episode came to an end. The Sex and the City sequel follows friends Carrie, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) as they navigate their intricate lives in New York City. Nicole Ari Parker and Sarita returned as the group's new besties Lisa and Seema this season. The show picks up 11 years after the events of the 2010 film Sex and the City 2, and follows three of the four original main characters. Following the success of Kim Cattrall 's cameo in the second season, it's been widely reported that her character Samantha will return for at least part of the third season. Sara Ramirez will not be returning as controversial non-binary comedian Che Diaz. Since starting in December 2021, the Sex And The City spin-off has seen Carrie, Samantha and Charlotte grapple with sexuality, gender identity, death, grief, divorce, drug use, and pretty much every other hot issue in Western society. The original Sex and the City ran for six seasons, airing on HBO from 1998 until 2004. The story continued with two feature films: Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010). And Just Like That... premiered its first season in 2021. The third season will feature 12 episodes, with the finale airing on August 14.

Love Island's Lauren Wood claps back at Women's Aid's statement on Harrison Solomon's behaviour as she insists 'it was blown out of proportion'
Love Island's Lauren Wood has clapped back at Women's Aid after the charity accused her partner Harrison Solomon of 'misogyny' and 'sexism' on the show. Harrison, 22, quit the Majorca villa last week after becoming embroiled in a love triangle with Islanders Toni Laites, 24, and Lauren, 26, which saw the footballer go back and forth between the two women, causing weeks of upset and conflict. His treatment of the pair was condemned by viewers but much to his dismay, Women's Aid also criticised his actions by releasing a damning statement claiming his behaviour 'reinforces a culture that excuses and trivialises violence against women and girls.' But dog walker Lauren has declared the charity's statement was 'blown way out of proportion' as she insisted Harrison 'just made a mistake'. She told Cosmopolitan: 'Erm obviously, I think it was blown out of proportion like he's made a mistake but everyone makes mistakes. 'Like, he's gone about it the wrong way, he knows he has done wrong. I think it was just the timing of everything. 'It was literally just the timing of it but like he said, he isn't a bad person and everyone in the villa knows that.' MailOnline has contacted Women's Aid for comment. The Derby-born Islander had a relationship with US waitress Toni before embarking on a new romance with Lauren after meeting her in rival villa Casa Amor, with the couple becoming the first to have sex on the ITV2 show this series. But Harrison then sparked outrage by convincing Toni, who was unaware he had slept with Lauren, to rekindle, leaving the distraught influencer in floods of tears. Shortly after their bedroom antics were exposed, Lauren was dumped from the villa and followed out the door by Harrison, who was quickly informed of Women's Aid's criticism which left him dumbstruck. Fans on X shared their concern for Lauren's disagreement with Women's Aid and wrote: 'She forgive Harrison everything. Let's c once they have split up', 'setting women back omg', 'Standing up for someone is one thing, but brushing off a real issue as 'just a mistake' can do more harm than good', 'To think they were trying to support her as well. They literally made that statement to support her', 'Mind you Women's Aid were backing HER and were fuming about how she was treated and she's saying this? This girl has set women back 1000 years'. Fans on X shared their concern for Lauren's disagreement with Women's Aid and wrote: 'She forgive Harrison everything. Let's c once they have split up' Meanwhile, Harrison revealed what he really thought on the Women's Aid statement in an exclusive interview with MailOnline. He insisted the charity was wrong to call him out and claims the nature of the statement upset his family. He said: 'I have seen the backlash and it's hard to digest. I would disagree with a lot of it in terms of my respect for women, I do respect women. 'The worst has been from Women's Aid. I know myself and the girls on the show too, Toni said she knows I'm not a bad person, just went about situations in the wrong way, but the Women's Aid statement wasn't nice... it's not nice coming out of the villa to my mum upset by that so I would say that's been the hardest.' He added: 'To the women I have hurt, I am obviously sorry. I got it wrong and the back and forth between the two connections caused more harm than I ever intended. 'It wasn't ever an ego thing. I am not proud of how I handled things and I'm not going to make excuses. 'I just want to own it. If people can give me the space to grow from it, I will do everything I can to be better and that's the only thing I can do. 'There is no handbook for how to be on a show like Love Island. It's instincts and intentions. I got some of it right, but I know I got a lot of it wrong, and I know that now.' Lauren was regularly left in tears after feeling humiliated by Harrison and his actions in the Love Island villa Harrison said the statement issued by Women's Aid, which commented on women being 'lied to, slut-shamed, and laughed at behind their backs' was particularly detrimental given the close relationship he shares with his mother and younger sister. Harrison says leaving Love Island was a decision he made himself, telling MailOnline: 'I have seen a lot of this online and I feel like I am my own man and I'm going to make my own choices. 'I wouldn't have left one of the biggest TV shows in the UK if I didn't see a future with Lauren. It was a very emotional conversation because she was just dumped, she was acting on emotion, she just wanted to get across to me how much she was into me and wanted to give me a second chance. 'I understand where people are coming from, but Lauren found a proper connection, of course she wanted me to leave with her. Lauren didn't make the decision for me though I followed my heart.' American contestant Toni believed she had found The One in Harrison, given he was Miami based and in her age range, but after realising she deserved better than to be an option, she told him: 'You treated me like s*** repeatedly and I tried to walk away multiple times.
